    This is brilliant! I bought an old Nikkor 80-200 f4.5 AI lens to test out the compression/aperture to see what quality of bokeh I could expect in portraits. At 4.5, it's stunning. I'll keep it because it was so cheap, but planning to get a Nikon or Tamron in f4 instead of 2.8. Thanks for the confirmation!

    What about vibration reduction? Because the longer the focal length, the more blur that could be seen in the photo. I know how to shoot without vibration reduction by bringing up the ISO beyond focal length and by bringing up the shutter speed beyond the focal length. For an example, a 200mm lens would need an ISO OF 400 or 800 and a shutter speed of 1/250th of a second or higher.

    gregc107 In my experience 2.8 is ok for certain types of indoors, but it doesn't help as much. Honestly, you're better off buying the f4 version for outdoors and then buying some fast primes. The weight is a big downside tbh. I own both versions and I haven't touched my f2.8 version since I completed my prime set.

  • @gregc107

    @gregc107

    Hi Arcane!! I also own a Nikon 70-200 @ F2.8 and have also owned a Nikon 80-200 @ 2.8. Granted your Camera body will be a factor in this equation but having the fast lens will certainly never be a downside. Currently the Dslr lenses I own an 85mm @ F1.8, then 10.5mm FE, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 300mm and 400mm all at F2.8. With the exception of the 85mm the rest are my working lenses. I also own a AF-S IF-ED VR 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 . I agree that having a prime would be a good option but I think said you have already used your 70-200 F.2.8 and find it to be a weight issue. So a prime 200mm or 300mm in a 2.8 would just be a burden.. No? Personally, I will take the option of faster glass and just eat and extra bowl of spinach to muscle/manage the extra weight (which btw really isn't all the much). Also remember indoors all lighting conditions will not be equal. One place has great lighting and the next it's very poor. Factor in say a sports event where they say no flash allowed, and you will love that you took the F2.8 lens and put it to work. Outdoors I tend to agree that its way easy to make up the lose at the lens being wide open to only f4.0. But we all know that the upgrade path will surely come when you'll wish you have the 2.8 lens. Can you rent one? Well Certainly! Would you want to keep doing so is the question..My answer was never rent. I guess I'm just a bit on the overkill side at times maybe , but I would rather have it then need it.

    This f/4 lens seems like a great choice for the SPECIFIC JOB of outdoor events and sports. The fact that the f/4 is light enough to not put much pressure on the mount and can be carried around easily by the camera body is a huge plus for walking around outdoor/daylight events. That is a big selling point. For indoor events some people will skip past even the f/2.8 and go straight to even faster primes. Thanks, Jay P.!!

    Nothing lifting 50lb weights can't solve!!!....lol To be honest with indoor sport smaller primes may not be a lot of good to someone in the stands, and even when the photographer is on the floor they might miss shots sometimes of things happening as they come up the floor. Which in my opinion is why mid-range zoom are a critical tool. The exception to me is a fisheye lens because of its ability to capture 180 degrees, But its best in limited usage. That is why I mostly never use the 85mm F1.8 I have. Shots that other people can see themselves taking are no good to a sports photographer.

    That's the point. I am a hobbyist and generally shoot travelling. Therefore I don't want a lens of 1.5 kg because I know that after the initial excitement for the new toy I will leave it at home. This seems a smart solutions for people like me who do not want to spend €1.300/1.400 for the Nikon equivalent. Think I am not the only.

  • @gregc107

    @gregc107

    6 жыл бұрын

    Mantanela, I get it but here is some perspective as I see it.... We all want to pass the hobbyist stage as some point, and whether we think we need them or no we all want higher end lenses and camera bodies. Are there those who don't feel need them? Well I guess but, as photographers I don't think there will be many of us who will say that they were at some point shooting in light conditions where they wish they had faster glass. At the end of the day if cost was a non factor none of us would say "Oooooooh no thanks I don't want a pro-grade lens, because it weighs too much. If it's all the same to you I'll just take the slower version because its 6 oz/170 g lighter." Reality is that if cost were a minimal factor we'd all go after the better glass hands down in 98-99% of the cases. Weight is almost a non factor for those that rely on tripods as opposed to handholding.

    The TAMRON 70 - 210 mm F4.0 is a good lens. I tested it on a Canon 5D. After three days I returned the lens ... Why? There are three reasons for me, I can't accept: 1. The pictures in the range from 180 - 210 mm at F 4.0 becomes blurred. 2. The autofocus is a little too slow for me. 3. The zoom ring is near the front lens, I think that is not ergonomic.

    Here is how you make your decision. If you like a very shallow depth of field and you are ok zooming with your feet then the 85mm is a great lens. But if you are ok with not as much depth of field and you are in a tighter space so you can't back up as much, then the 70-210 works out great. It just depends on how you shoot.

    I personally bought the Canon 70-200 f4 no is since it was the only one I could afford at the time, fast forward 6 years and still rocking this glass mostly I'm a intermediate semi pro so no need for faster glass at least not this one, also when I saw a famous headshot photographer using it since he step it to f8 anyways and swear by it, I couldn't be happier with my desicion since he is a top notch photographer and has the money to invent in better ones and yet he says that the lens is sharp enough and is a workhorse for him. It comes to what are you shooting and your style but most of the time that dof is not needed, also i have shoot with this lens on f16 zoomed in to 200 and because of the coc and the compression i blur the background pretty nice

    Great points and mostly what anyone should consider when buying a new lens. Budget is the major factor, but if you own a 3000 dollars camera and can only afford an 800 dollars lens, perhaps that camera isn't for you, just yet. However the f/stop is a bit tricky: I've shot and printed photos even at ISO 5000 on my 70D, and anyone, with the right hand, can get that stop of light back through post-processing. Sure, the image it might not be that perfect, but unless is Swiss cheese, nobody will ever notice! And newer cameras will always do better than a 2013 camera.

    1:41 Are the labels backwards? Assuming these are both shot at the same distance from the subject, same area of focus (focus point, for example if it was on the eye), same FL, then why does the f/4 version show shallower DOF than the f/2.8. I think it's supposed to be the other way around. The 2.8 should have the shallower DOF. The framing is also different, and depending on the FL used that would also change DOF, as would distance from the subject, so I would recommend if you wanted to give a good comparison like this, do it in a studio with the camera on a tripod using a similar setup to showcase the DOF differences. You sort of introduced too many variables into this example.

  • @TheSlantedLens

But compared to say the Nikon, I'd spend the extra to get the image quality of the Nikon which is regarded to be a very good lens, and despite it's loss of a stop compared to their VR and VR II 2.8 versions, it's still a very good option. This Tamron may be a decent option for someone getting started in photography or if they wanted to get started in portraits but maybe don't have (or don't want to buy, an 85., 105 or 135mm portrait lens). This Tamron may also be better for travelers. I guess the one thing that does frustrate me with some Tamron lenses is their AF. You could set up an identical (static) scene (meaning nothing changes--lighting, composition, elements in the frame, et c don't change--like shooting in a studio), and put the camera on a tripod and maybe 9/10 the lens will focus just fine, but that one time in every few bursts, the lens either has to hunt, or can't lock focus.... this part about Tamron lenses frustrates me. Generally, in the ones I've tested (their 70-200 2.8 and the 100-400) they're relatively quick to focus, but they still suffer from this focus issue that creeps up periodically. If you're doing landscape or portraits in the studio, maybe not a big deal, but if you're using your lens for sports, this can be an issue (not that anyone would use a 70-210 necessarily for sports). I mean it's probably good value since it costs at least half of what Nikon and Canon options are so it's great for those who are on a budget, but the AF inconsistency I'll say, is bothersome. While we're on the subject of cost, also keep in mind that third party lenses tend to lose a considerable amount of value even over a shorter period of time (say 2-4 years) than an OEM lens. Most OEM lenses will still sell for about 2/3 or 3/4 of their new price 5 years later, but third party lenses like this, and others from Sigma, etc, might only sell for about half of what you paid, on the used market, so just be aware. If you're serious about getting a lens like this, maybe also consider an OEM lens. They will cost more, but if you plan to keep them longer the resale value will be better when you go to sell it. Another thing to consider about third party is copy to copy variation . Yes it happens with both OEM and Third party lenses but it's more common among third party lenses partially because I feel the QC/QA and materials is one area that third parties tend to relax a bit to save on costs (not saying they cut corners, but they may not put lenses through as rigours testing before shipping, or they may not use the highest quality glass or internal components--motors or electronics).

    Glad you enjoy Tamron. I personally will never buy another Tamron. Partly due to poor build quality and partly due to poor customer service. Every Tamron I've had is now dead where my Sigma and Canon units continue to work. Tamron refused to honor a warranty saying one I bought thru them came from "Bob's camera shop in Las Vages". Never been there and no idea what they are talking about unless they gave me a refurb when I bought it new from them. Even with my paperwork they refused so I will never own another Tamron again.

    WOW @ that!! Sorry to hear about how you got treated. I just think that Tamron (at least the variable zoom like a 70-200) lack the contrast and color saturation that my nikon equivalent has. Yes its more affordable but just for kick i pitted one from the local camera store up for a few sample shots. I just thought they didn't have as much pop from the Tamron.

    That is the thing about Tamron, they have come such a long way..but the quality control is not up to name brand standards. Cannon and Nikon due put out some lemons now and again but it is a low number. The thinkg I like about Nikon, especially the old lenses is they were made to last. That is why they cost a bit more.

    @@jacquelinej2036 A lens with focus breathing will not be it's advertised diameter at close focus and especially it's minimum focus distance . This is important because you lose depth of field . For example the Nikon 70-200 has noticeable focus breathing and the Canon 70-200 is much truer to its advertised size . If you zoom in as close as possible at 200mm with both lenses in a portrait headshot , the Canon will zoom much closer in and its depth of field will be better .

    @@justinzaff Ah I see, so when in minimum focus distance, it actually has a longer focal length than advertised am I understanding correctly? I was watching a video explaining this and maybe the person is more a video shooter and so he doesn't like changing focus changes the field of view and so he thinks its a bad thing. But as more of a stills shooter like you said I think its a great thing. Whats your opinion between this Tamron and the Canon 70-200 F4 Mark I as well as the Canon 70-300 IS USM II?

    F/4 may cost 50% less than F/2.8 but it also lets in only 50% light. I abhor carrying bricks, so, F/4 can be perfect me, but nowadays i have started to hate standard & tele zooms, ... a wide zoom is the only zoom i need, however, Tamron 15-30 VC is very heavy, and i don't like f/4 wide zooms, hence the problem. For tele zooms, f/4 is fine in my case.

    @@justlovethisgame3537 try using that F4 at an indoor sporting event where no one is still, but instead there is constant action. that F4 zoomed out to 210 might not show you tack sharp photos across the board. And yes, that camera is just a box but the functionality of the box will either be an advantage to the photographer of an issue of sorts because of the limits it my present in certain situations. So can you get photos with an F4 lens well yeah but what is the percentage you end up culling out of a shoot is a good question to ask yourself is a question to ask. I routinely see press photographer on the line with a camera owned by the newspaper they are working for. Usually a Nikon 3000 series body with a 35-70 @ F3.3-F4.5. The use on cam flash and basically pick shots coming toward them. Do they get photos?..Yes Do they miss out of lots of potential good shots?.. Most Certainly!! So its no so much the photographer in the day and age as it might be how much less work you have to do with certain setups as I see it. I've owned but the Nikon 70-210 F4 as well as owning a Nikon 70-200 F2.8, and there is a marked difference in what type workflow you might be able to get with each. I have also done the same with Nikon 300 F4 a to a Nikon 300 F2.8. So again I never said you cant get photos.. What I did say was that the F4 might be more problematic.
