5 reasons NO ONE uses watercolor pencils EVER

Watercolor pencils are everywhere. But tutorials are scarce, and few artists seem to use them. Here are 5 reasons why that might be (and why you should definitely try them out!).

I use watercolour pencils for my compact handbag size sketchbooking kit. The primary colours, plus a white and a black, and a water brush pen, and one black marker (waterproof). It's perfect and I love the blendy loose combo of colours I can create with this kit. I'm not concerned about being precise or true to life in my sketchbook, so this works well for my little 'go everywhere with me' kit.

I am a beginner with watercolor, and after a lot of research, started my watercolor journey with a 48 set of Goldfaber Aqua watercolor pencils combined with about a dozen Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils. I chose to start my journey with the pencils mainly because the mess involved with watercolor pans and palettes is a huge turnoff for me. I prefer being able to clean my plastic pallete when done with a piece and with the pencils can see what color I need easily. Because I am a senior on a fixed budget, cost is a huge factor. Your reasoning about watercolor pencils is spot on with my experience so far!!! And as a result, I don't expect to be making changes to my medium selection anytime soon. Great video!

I love the flexibility of watercolor pencils, and that you've shown so many ways to use them. Like any other media, they take practice and getting to know them. I've used them in the Strathmore MultiMedia Sketchbook when traveling and they are so convenient, especially for plein air.

Love my pencils and I learned all about them by watching your channel. I’ve watched other artists use them also, but really… they have no clue!!! Thank you for your clear and concise instructions. As an oil artist (painter) this whole concept of water was foreign and frustrating… until I binge watched your videos.

Thank you for championing WCP's! I have full sets of a few major brands and used them for years, although not so much now. But yes, you can definitely do full, complex paintings with them, and I have done. Two tips that might be helpful for your viewers: 1. To save money, a cheap small white plastic cutting board from the dollar store is textured just like the more expensive brand WCP palette and works just fine and is great for a travel kit, and 2. To avoid weakening the wood collar (where the "lead" comes out) by getting it wet, I put a clear drop of water on my plastic palette or even a junk credit card and quickly dip the color "lead" into that drop of water, which will soften the pigment without risking getting the collar wet. A single drop of water will last a long time.

That has definitely been my experience too! You have by far the most comprehensive and helpful watercolor pencil videos. So many others are just artists swatching them out for the first time, which is fine for them to do, of course, but we don’t really learn much about really using them from those videos.

Love them. Ever since trying them months ago, I've barely touched regular watercolours. So much more accurate, and then like you say, less water, one container of water, less mess, I use a brush to activate them. I've used them in locations where they'd never allow regular watercolour. I tried an experiment the other day, I coloured the "painting", and then used a spray bottle and misted it, everything popped instantly.

Thank you! I understand, maybe try them for misty autumn scenes and this should make it better. What I do for other subjects is add regular watercolor pencils to the palette, especially for bright yellows, reds and oranges as these are missing with the graphitint! On my website in the Patreon tutorials section, watercolor pencils, you will see a buoy I created with both graphitint and FC Albrecht Dürer pencils to solve the problem. It worked very well! Hope this helps!

I first learnt about them as a coloured pencil background, but they were so lovely have gradually built up my collection.

You're welcome ! I use an old fashioned metal sharpener, the simplest one that has been around for decades in schools and stores. Sometimes this or that sharpener will work better for you depending on the pencil too! Softer leads do better with certain sharpeners otherwise they break (usually for me i avoid plastic sharpener with these or fancy sharpeners, I use the metal basic one).
