5 Reasons I Sold My Insanely Rare Porsche 964

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

19The Porsche 964 is arguably the most desired air cooled Porsche, yet I just sold my insanely rare unicorn ‘92 C2 coupe in Amazon Green less than 1 year after buying it. Am I nuts?
Maybe. But maybe not.
In this video I lay out my personal reasoning for selling this gorgeous Porsche 964. The good news is I found a buyer within 2 days. The bad news is I am quite nervous that I will HIGHLY regret selling this iconic Classic Porsche 911.

As a engineer who works at Porsche Stuttgart, I most deffinately can say NONE of the reasons mentioned in this video are valid. I do own Carrera 4 964 and its a daily driver for me. Also he says the car is not drivable per say, I 100% disaggree with him. I mean if you are not gonna drive it, what'll you do with it ? These cars are specifically designed to be driven. I drive mine every day and its just AWESOME.

Makes total sense. I had a feeling you wouldn’t keep in long since the interior was so perfect it becomes stressful. I think adding a long hood will round out your collection and balance the driving experiences. I have a 2007 997 coupe, 84 911 targa, a 63 356b coupe, and an 87 Ferrari 328 gts. I think I’ve settled on the driving experiences I like and will likely keep them for a long time. The only change I could see making is dropping the 997 and replacing it with an 86-89 911 turbo. Love your content and hope to one day cruise up to NC. I’m out in the country in outside of Atlanta. Love the roads in NC, lived in Hendersonville in the mid 90s for a year.

I worked at a Porsche dealer during the transitional times from the last G-bodies to the early 993s. I was lucky enough to have sampled many variants of all models. I loved them all. The 964 felt like a modernized, hot-rodded g-body. In terms of performance and design, the 964 is a transitional model. I think most people like the looks of G-bodies and 993s over 964s, and their values will reflect that in the future. The 993 was a giant leap in handling and performance, and I wish it stuck around longer.

Life forced me to sell my 993 and 964, I really could have kept 1 of them but decided to liquidate, and despite the sentiment in most of the comments I miss the 964 more than the 993. Still would love to have either one back. Oh well perhaps one day !!

Great points Will. I find my 993 is more refined and luxurious compared to my 964. My wife actually likes riding in the 993 - the 964 not so much. My 964 fixer upper was modified and much more raw which I do enjoy. I also have the desire to get a long hood to add to the collection for a more analog/raw feeling. We’ll see if that happens! Looking forward to the rescheduled drive! Anand

I'm sure in long terms you will miss it. But I understand your point of view, cause I went the same road down. The 993 and the 964 are very similar to drive. In my collecting I have now more variaty. A Targa, a turbo and a coupe from different eras of the 911. So I enjoy every ride and every car with different experiences. Looking forward to your next 911 family member😀

Will, I was shocked to hear but not surprised at all. I completely get the different driving experiences thing. I’m in the early stages of building a Porsche history theme different driving model collection as well. Starting with 356, to long hood 911, 914 tribute, g-body Carrera, 930 and 964 variant. Looking for the pure different driving experience that each model offers. All are in different stages and over the next 5 years hope to be able to experience them for what each model represents and how different they drive. So I completely understand your decision!! I believe we are caretakers along the way and your 964 was cared for by you and now it’s time for it’s next journey! Thanks for video.

I’m not totally surprised. The 964 and 993 are essentially of the same era, and the 1973 911T I drove was definitely vintage- more akin to my 356. Also glad you opted not to modify the 964, because they have become increasingly difficult to find stock. I have a ‘93 C2 and I somewhat prefer it to my ex-‘96 993, but unless you’re opening a museum there’s not much of a rationale for having both. That said… the long hood 911s are occasional/weekend cars. You can rebuild for more power and add a/c, but the handling and braking are decades behind your 964. They are beautiful cars, though!

Hi Will. Bit of surprise to find out you let go your 964 but I understand your reasons. Putting miles on collector's quality 964 example doesn't feel right, I agree. On top of that 993 as a pinnacle of air-cooled 911's provides unique driving experience. Long-hood seats at another end of the scale - where it all started. It will be interesting to compare them side to side. Good luck, best wishes

Interesting video, many of his "reasons" are spot on and similar to what I have been grappling with on my low miles 964 Turbo. Unlike him I am still going through that thought process (6 years) Get his comment about not going back after thinking about selling, but I have backed off a bit on the idea of selling. I do have a driver SC targa and a 987.2 S that get driven a great deal more and with a lot less stress.

I can relate. I got a 911 like that. I bought it to modify, but is so rare, and has so little miles on it that it would be a crime to do it. I'm also afraid to drive it for fear of someone hitting it. I drive it like 3 times a year. It just sits in the corner of may garage with a cover over it most of the time.

Good luck on the long hood quest but don’t be surprised if you realize your 3.2 fills that niche perfectly and then some. You may be 964 shopping again soon. Best wishes and thanks for the videos.

All of these generations are great cars. The 993 of course is a great refined driving car. And the G body Carrera 3.2 is absolutely an automotive icon of the highest order. Maybe the 964 is a "tweener"? I think it's a smart move as a driver to go back and get into something "more 911". Lighter, smaller, faster, less comfortable, less refined, higher revving. I think that would be cool. Even is you took an old SC and made a '73 RS that would be a great video series.

Basically they're all the same car. Sure there were changes and improvements but unless you take 'em to the limits their feel is very similar (from the 80's to the 993). Can't comment the earlier T-models though and I'm sure they're different. I think most air cooled fans love all the generations because they maintained the same "feel" up until 996 came. I don't like the looks of 996 or the car itself... I'm sure it's a nice, capable car but nothing like these air cooled.

I have what I think would have been an obvious alternative to selling that beautiful 964. Another 4 post lift. Not expensive and brings room for a 4th one in the garage. You can then get a long hood car and if you really wanted to, and I'd consider, take the 964 only to shows and cars n coffee. Too late now, but seemed obvious to me.

I had a 997.2 and can’t speak to the .1, although there’s plenty of info out there about them. The .1’s suffer from the IMS hullabaloo (rennlist.com/how-tos/a/porsche-997-why-the-ims-bearing-issue-is-overblown-383755) which seems to be way overblown. I found my 997.2 C4S exceptionally easy to live with and quite attractive, although it felt like it lacked character in certain ways. That said, I am a fan of vintage and analog driving so that’s my bias. Many LOVE the 997 so grab one if you can.

Just something to be aware of - the earlier cars do seem to be a bit more fussy this way. That said, loved both cars but would never trade my 997 for another early car. I have to agree with reason number 2. I have an early RoW 89 C4, with only 80,000km and it's so clean I just don't want to take it out. I'm frightened that it's going to suffer rock chips, or that I'l scrape the wheels or that I'll even somehow wear the interior. I'm not even happy taking it up to it's rev limiter 😁 So it spends it life not doing a great deal 😱 I've scratched the longhood itch with a 65 but so far, I haven't driven it as it's still undergoing it's rebuild.

Totally get reason number three. They are only original once and I factor that in when I am in the market. If a prospective car already has mods then I feel far more comfortable putting my personal stamp on it.

Long time 911 lover here but until recently never had the money to even consider one. Question: what’s the best year for an air cooled 911 for somebody who wants one to actually drive somewhat regularly? Pure pleasure car. I don’t need peak performance, will not take it to a track, and don’t care about getting huge appreciation in the future. Reasonable reliability is more important. Opinions? Thanks

That really depends on your budget. 3.2 Carreras you can’t go wrong with. Galvanized, bulletproof motors. Fun to drive. Iconic. But again, really depends on your budget and what you like (longhood vs impact bumper vs 964 vs 993?) Not to mention couple vs targa vs cab.

I pretty much had it nailed in my earlier pre video comments re Garage Queen and Value. It was the reason I sold my ‘93 Turbo 3.6. I have kept my C4 for 9 years and I think it is the ‘complete’ 964, not the C2, if you want to drive hard on wet backroads. I doubt you will regret selling, as it wasn’t for you. I decided to jump the years and go Cayman R and now Spyder for my second road car.

Respectfully, a sixth or main reason seems to be that you can't commit to long term relationships 😅. After all, the longest you have kept a car is 3 years... Incidentally, if you want variety in the driving experience combined with daily qualities in an air-cooled 911, a 964 C4 is hard to beat.

What are the least desirable Porche 911s and why ? For someone looking to get into the 911 ownership where should I start ?

  • @Rennthusiast

    @Rennthusiast

    Жыл бұрын

This doesn’t answer your question exactly but it’s a start: kzread.info/dash/bejne/anaplKWOfbuXk5M.html As far as least desirable, this depends on who you ask as well as what your ownership goals are. Budget plays a part, both for the initial purchase as well as upkeep. Do you want classic or modern? Coupe, targa or cab? Do you want a shine and show example or do you want a driver? As far as problems go, the 996 911 has the IMS bearing issue which was widespread and catastrophic. This can be very easily researched. It really boils down to doing your homework once you’ve decided what you want out of a 911.

Beautiful car and if it's not the right car for you, send it. Title of video is "insanely rare" - that 964 is not "insanely rare", the interior/exterior color spec is moderately rare. A C4 Lightweight would be "insanely" rare. I sold an E30 M3 for some of the same reasons - mostly because it I felt it was a garage queen and I sought something that I could daily, which resulted in a 996 C4S: Modern chassis, awd, great climate control and a/c, airbags, very easy going as a daily and not worried about value! Not rare. :-) Happy Porsche driving! Thanks for your videos, well done.

Don't agree with number 2. These cars are driver's cars. My 996 is relatively low mileage, I'm only the second owner, but it will never be a garage queen. I've done 3400 miles in my first year of ownership and will never tire of driving it.

I hear you, but the value and collectibility of the 996 can’t in any way be compared to the 964. I don’t disagree with the idea they’re meant to be driven. That’s what I love about them. But you gotta be smart about which examples to beat on.

Ok here's a question - if the AG 964 was your first air-cooled, and then you bought a 993 several years after, which one would you keep? As in, assuming you build an emotional attachment to the 964 and then the 993 comes along. By the way, I like your decision process, but not the whole "collectible" reasoning. You're on this Earth once for a very short time. Buy and drive the car you like; who cares about "collectability" or "too nice to drive"

What would you like to see? I am seriously open to suggestions. I plan to change up the types of shots I do, but would love content ideas from anyone willing to give them to me. A couple of thoughts: 1. After making over 100 videos, I’ve found formulas for what seems to work and what doesn’t. So if a formula grows the channel, I tend to reuse it. Perhaps not the best approach for some viewers. 2. A “format” is something that I’ve focused on developing. So, an intro, main content, then an outro. Would love your thoughts on this too. I am not going to pivot the entire channel based on feedback from one viewer but at the same time I’m sure you’re not the only one feeling this way. So help me out. 👍🏼
