5 Reasons I Left DENTAL HYGIENE and Became a NURSE !!

In this video, I discuss the 5 reasons i left dental hygiene and became a nurse. Many people are not aware, but my first undergraduate degree was in dental hygiene. I actually moved from the dental assistant role and earned an associate's degree in dental hygiene. After working as an RDH for five years, I went back to college and earned my first degree in nursing. Watch to find out why. Was it worth it??

I started as a nurses aid then a CNA it wasn't benefits that took my career path. I loved learning and loved pt care. I then became a nurse. After graduating and starting my new career. A great fascinating opportunity came up. I became a research assistant at Stanford and shortly became a senior research assistant and was blessed I could do Nursing in a hospital part time all while doing the clinical research project for 2 yrs. It was awesome! Unfortunately I sustained a bad work injury in 1997 and can no longer work. But still soaking up educational skills as medicine keeps advancing. I love your channel. Thank you

My experience for Dental Hygiene has been a good one so far. There are many offices now with benefits and a sign on bonus/relocation arrangement funds. I receive full benefits package with paid holidays, PTO , 2weeks vacation time and health insurance ….etc we are in the process of getting a 401k plan set up for the team (for now I do that independently)… if I need to take off they would just get a temp hygienist to replace me if needed. I work 4 days a week and make well over 120k. If I’m feeling like I need more money I could temp and add about 30k a year to that. I thought about nursing but I dnt believe I could deal with the emotional stress it presents. I plan to be a clinical instructor later in life and maybe work in public health to offer dental hygiene treatment in schools. I’ve also thought about going into research. I have a bachelors of health science degree in Dental Hygiene! Guygienist represent 🙌🏽

I am considering on becoming an Dental Hygienist. I've looked at both ends for Nurses and DH to be fair I like both. if I were to do both I would but my gut and heart is leaning towards Dental Hygienist. Here we have holidays off, weekends off including benefits and it's on high demand for RDH including Nurses. my other option would be Radiology MRI but sadly we don't have that here or close by anyways. we do have radiography. I am super pumped for it. I say do a lot of research, look at day in the lives, pros and cons, what to expect and many more. I am very thankful for internet and having that information provided. thank you very much. Edit: Holidays off, weekend offs for DH. apologies. Edit: I do feel that finding my own patient is a bit much for RDH. 😅I know some schools provides them and I hope that's the case because if it isn't.. I am going to have a hard time finding patients for my clinicals and board exams.

I’m 32 and I’m trying to decide which path. When I was 25 I took a DA course and I enjoyed it! Unfortunately the going salary was less than my technical support salary. I ended up transitioning into HR. Now, with all the layoffs I’m unemployed! I’m also living back with my family. I want to take this time to really choose a route that will ensure stability for me (I do not plan to have children). I just want to live comfortably. I’ve always liked that Hygiene gives you the opportunity to work more independently. However, it’s become increasingly popular and there are only 32 seats available in the program lol. I live in a a highly populated city that’s constantly growing. I do not want to have to wait 2 years just to finally take the course 🥴. I wish there were more schools available.

This video was so helpful. This video helped me choose Nursing. Did a ton of research between the two and found the admission process for Nursing was easier than Dental Hygiene. It also seems like Nursing school is a bit easier but not by much hence why you explained the exam piece. Dental Hygiene school is way more expensive as well. Also, I do like the flexibility in nursing. I also like the benefits that would be harder to find in Dental Hygiene.

Hi! Congratulations on starting DH school! Phlebotomy is not required as a prerequisite for nursing, but is taught during the program. Nurses are taught how basic venipuncture, blood draw, medication administration, blood product administration, etc. See how DH goes, but see if you can find opportunities to shadow in nursing. Being exposed to both may help your decision. Good luck to you!! Keep me updated 😊👩🏻‍⚕️

I agree, I’ve been a hygienist for 6 years with a bachelors and I don’t have additional responsibilities or salary to show for it. My only hygiene option is moving to another state so I can gather more credentials (WA expanded functions) or continue with a Masters to be an instructor. I’ve worked in specialty as well and it’s the same thing. I love hygiene but there isn’t much diversification in the field. Can we start administering Botox already?!?!?!

So I got into two dental hygiene programs… my dream! One school was a private school, 100k for 2 years to end up with a bachelors The other is 35k, an associates, 2 years. I’d love to have a bachelors in my back pocket for dental hygiene just because i worry about when I’m older, But i went with the associates. What do you think about my decision/ isn’t 100k a lot of debt i would have went into? I thought that 35k is manageable, less debt, and getting the same education. Some say that the private program is a better education… makes me sad :/ both accredited though!

You most definitely made the right decision. I do not think that $100k would have been worth it. It surely wont cost you $65k to complete an online bachelors program if you decide to do so (which would be great, but the benefits of getting that bachelors might not be worth even less $$). I told myself that I was going to go back for my bachelors in dental hygiene but I cannot see how it would benefit me for the cost of it.

I love all the options nursing offers but I so regret not becoming a dentist (I know this is about RDH which is also fascinating). Now it’s just not feasible. Before my BSN, my first BA was in psychology and I was on track to become psychotherapist had I continued pursuing a graduate degree but healthcare was always my calling. Ultimately dentistry was ALWAYS the one that got away and probably always will be. I wanted to be a dentist even when I was 3 years old, but I never felt smart enough because of all the chemistry requirements. I feel foolish for having 2 bachelors degrees when I should have paid a tutor and found a way to make the grades for dental school. I just never felt smart enough.

Nursing is a much more flexible career. If you want a hardcore job, you can choose that. If you want to be a school nurse, you can do that too. That alone is enough for me because I’m a quitter. If I don’t like how I am treated at my job, I leave the next day. I realized I need a career that allows for this (to a reasonable extend of course) and also presents a challenge academically/mentally on a daily basis. I need a job where I can put my brain and body to use, that’s why I’m choosing nursing instead of dental hygiene. Dental hygiene seems more monotonous, no hate, I 1000% respect their jobs it’s just not for me. I see myself in a critical unit or emergency room with difficult/emergent cases. I also want to work nights as a serious night owl lol and that doesn’t seem possible with dentist office hours. They have the same prerequisites at my community college, but the dental hygiene class is 14 while nursing is 50. Dental hygiene doesn’t seem like it’s for me in general anyways

Congratulations on completing your first semester! It is perfectly normal to have doubts during and throughout your educational journey. There are so many options for XR techs--and even bridge programs to further your education. I loved DH but it was very limited regarding advancement options and working conditions. For me, the choice to leave DH was based on career advancement and the working schedule. The 8-5 M-F wasn't for me. I would much rather work 3-4 longer shifts per week with varied days off. Think about what works for you and your schedule. What are your career goals? Also, you start clinicals soon, so maybe consider seeing how clinicals go? You will have more insight after next semester on whether or not XR is a good fit for you!! Good luck and thanks for the comment!! Feel free to reach out anytime :)
