Surprisingly thoughtless and very unkind.
I've gone quite a while without using an alarm clock when I've been unemployed. The problems with using my circadian rhythms alone are a) I get different amounts of sleep from day to day (and somehow never seem to get enough), and b) I cycle through being up during the day and up during the night. I can see why some sort of standardization is required. We could never interact with each other in a meaningful way or get a society going if everyone just slept whenever their body told them to.

I would question whether this is because of other factors and not necessarily the lack of regulation - from an evolutionary standpoint humans shouldn’t need alarm clocks or to follow standardised time to reap the benefits of good sleep. Ideally, sleeping in a room with a lot of access to natural lighting should wake you up with the sunrise. Obviously this would get you up at an earlier time in the summer than in the winter, but our biology doesn’t account for the arbitrary structure of working hours. Setting a regular bedtime can also help to adjust your circadian rhythm to your daily routine, though it can’t always guarantee a regular wake-up time. Sleep can also be less effective when there are sounds around you, when the temperature is too hot or too cold, when your bed is uncomfortable or when there is too much light, even if it doesn’t wake you up, it is likely to make it harder to fall into deeper sleep. Similarly, anxiety or the stress of modern life affects sleep through both mental and physical symptoms - therapy and/or mindfulness are most effective to mitigate the effects of these, but switching caffeine for a herbal tea of lavender or chamomile before bed can induce calming effects in the short term. It’s unlikely that the lack of an alarm clock would be the largest hurdle to getting effective sleep, as it’s more natural for us than waking up with an alarm, and there are plenty of external factors which do actively disrupt our sleeping patterns.
@Tasarran

I know; I thought for a while about trying to do what Edison supposedly did, and sleep an hour every four (the hypothesis being that the first hour after you go to sleep is the most fruitful), but I could only do that if I were a self-employed inventor that didn't have to interface with the schedule of regular people.

Well, OK about the sharks vs. cows. But most people don't go deep-sea swimming all that much, do they? And when they do spot a shark swimming close to shore, all bathers are warned out of the water. On the other hand, city-dwellers especially are under entirely the wrong impression about cows and are remarkably incautious when they're around them.
