A while back I spoke with the mayor of this medium/small midwestern town of almost 600 households. We estimated how many firearms and the amount of ammo in private hands. We discussed things like professionals, trades people and military living in town, the water supply, the food and fuel supply. We also discussed the fact that barbed wire is available at the local hardware store and the flood control gabions could be used to block the four roads in and out of town. This town could be better off than most. The thing is, the fall is not a sudden incident, it is already happening. Sure, there are local disasters that require heroic measures. These happen all the time, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, fires and such. And these also require preparation. But the fall of the US is a slow ongoing thing, there may be no sudden TEOTWAWKI event, no massive invasion, no revolution, no nationwide power outage, no total banking crisis. Just the same old slow decay, bridges collapsing, fires raging, trains derailing, businesses failing and so on until the one hits that the fed and state can no longer help with. When did the Roman empire collapse? Was it the second time Rome was sacked, was it when the grain mills at Barbegal fell into disrepair, was it when the Senate was no longer ruling or when Germanic tribesmen were made soldiers of the empire? Gang membership in the US military is probably 2%, about 100 times that of the US population. Despite money being pumped into our infrastructure it is rated 13th in the world and falling further behind on repairs every year. Our mining, steel making, energy production is down. U"S rail lines, the most energy efficient means of transport are so much smaller than they once were. Our food production is dominated by fewer corporations, each of them deep in debt. The US is a net importer of food. Our debts, federal, state, municipal, personal and business is unsustainable. Our cities have grown more lawless. Worst, we are a divided society, have and have not, married and single parent, educated and barely literate, gun and anti-gun, republican and democrat, minority against minority, believers in God vs atheists. This can't continue without some kind of reset like the Great Depression or WWIII. But our military (with all due respect for those in uniform) cannot do what it did in WWII. We are in the period of decline. Fewer people know how do take care of basic necessities. Many don't even know how to cook their own food. If they do it is with a microwave and toaster. As for my wife and I, we garden, shoot, reload, cook, bake, can, sew, fish, exercise, read, grow fruit, trade for eggs. But we are part of a minority that have these skills and tools. We try to educate our neighbors, support local charities and to please God with out actions.

I believe most police departments and the military would be non-existent within 30 days in a true grid down scenario. Jonathan Hollerman writes about this in Survival Theory 2, and it stands to reaso n that in a grid down, everyone will end up protecting themselves and their families.

My experience tells me that in the far distant past (the 1970's) when I was much younger and tougher I did ok on my own in the backcountry until my supplies ran out. I couldn't carry much more than three weeks of food. I did once forage for roots and berries for ten days supplemented with some homemade granola bars. Great learning experience and weight loss program. A couple accidents and a bout of Giardia over a couple seasons as a Wilderness Guard for the Forest Service convinced me that traveling on main trails by myself even when you're very experienced, young and fit could still lead to an early demise becoming Coyote food thus completing the Great Circle of Life...... Load of BS. At 69 I will travel very limited distance on foot or much farther in one of my 4 wheel drives (3/4 ton four door GMC pickup or Jeep Rubicon both with trailers) with family and team. They all have a specialty of some sort. Sanitation, logistics, medical as well as military and law enforcement backgrounds. However it would have to be end of the earth type situation to move a group of all ages away from shelter, food, water and an easily hardend, defensible suburb right next to thousands of acres of farm ground.

Actually I stayed in Santa Fe national Forest ( Pecos wilderness) 44 days. I acquired slingshot and pellet pistol skills, boiled my water, collected firewood every day. I only took instant oats for fiber, instant cream of wheat almonds, and some jerky which was only 5 pds. Most of my external sustenance came from squirrel, birds, trout, and once a chipmunk ( not much meat). I went in with a gallon of water and once I got in from there I booked water in stainless steel containers. I came out looking great. Lean muscle. Granted this is mountains which give back.

It is great to see content directed at medium level preppers. Not the guys with 1000 acre retreats and bunkers and under ground crop growing setups. But people who have a year of food, 10,000 rounds, trauma med kits as well as primary care med kits (dental, optometric, antibiotics, ect ect), some water storage, maybe chickens or some meat livestock ect. People who would make it the first 90 days but then find out how hard survival really is. Most of the content out there is for new preppers " you need rice n beans, and a water filter" type if stuff. So your videos are are appreciated. Ive been watching you for a few years, and i hope you got out of tacoma. If you find your way to tri cities, weve got a MAG that is close to your speed.

Everybody needs a bugout cart. I made 1 with 2 front wheels from a mountain bike..... I covered the 4 sides with molle panels so I can add stuff on the outside as well. The floor is from 20 mm plywood..... And painted it so it's waterproof..... The sides are from aluminum plates and the top bended so it's stronger.... And even made a tarp over it..... And I can still carry my backpack. So I can carry on foot through rough terrain at least for 3 months worth of food....... Mostly rise and pasta.... Supplemented with wild edibles...... Fish and trap..... To maybe 6 months.

to the woods around my local water source, where I have scatter-buried a year's supply of food and where I have dug 2 spiderholes, 20m apart. I've got rot-treated shoring logs cached there. So, yes, it's a LOT better than any above ground building, which can be set on fire, shot thru and is known-about by 100's of people and findable by thousands more.

@@bjty5615 dont come out of your tunnel except at night, and only for an hour while you get water, filter it, access a food bucket and cook a meal. Scan 360 degrees before emerging and repeat every 5 minutes. A year after shtf, 99% of the population will be DEAD. That will make it MUCH safer (at night) to tend small, hidden plots of peanuts and root veggies.

Imho - The hardest thing about going is that you really need to do it before anyone else realizes it needs to be done. "We're going to the beach for a couple of weeks in the motorhome." (You're going to the mountains or desert.) "We'll be back in a couple of weeks." (See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya." Ideally your group should be coming from every compass direction, and comprised of people no one even is aware you know.

POTS is dead, FCC killed the requirement a few years back. Even if you have a regular phone on your wall, a little down the road it changes over to fiber. Depending on the local company’s infrastructure you may still have some service, but in a survival environment it should be expected not to be in service and reinforced with a full PACE plan.
