5 New Orleans Spirits You Haven't Tried

Today, we toast the new year - and only a bit sloppily - by tasting some of New Orleans’s local spirits. We sample rum, whiskey, absinthe, sake, and liqueur made here, mostly from things grown nearby and all from distilleries you can visit in person.

I recently discovered Free Tours By Foot - New Orleans after watching FTBF London. Andrew and his colleagues do an amazing job with every video, and I have to say that I'm addicted and have been binge watching each video. Andrew clearly does his research on every tour and offers more information than any other tour guide who I have ever watched.

As someone who lives in what feels like the brewery capital of Southern California, but loves to visit New Orleans, I would love a review of local breweries so I have a list for next time I am out.

I'd love to see a video from the 3 of you on famous New Orleans' cocktails. With you sampling those cocktails , of course. 😉. Drinking for your business is the best 'cause it's a tax write off!🙌

Fun vid! I've done the tour at 73 a couple times. Good tasting and knowledgeable staff. Make sure to take ride-share to get there and back because the tasting can be a lot of booze. There's also a commercial still in the Sazerac House on Canal. You don't have to take the museum tour to access the still (although I recommend the museum tour). Last time I was there they were cooking off a batch to send to Buffalo Trace for aging. I was told that New Orleans doesn't have a wide enough temperature variation to age fine liquor. In the vid you remark about "oakiness". Think about the mouth feel when you chew on a wooden coffee stir stick. It is like that. When barrel aged, the temperature variations force the liquor into and out of the charred wood inside the barrel. That's where it gets it's color and flavor profile. Coming down for St. Patrick's Day. Hope to see you then,

Is the Old New Orleans Rum still down from the fire? We toured that distillery 12 or 13 yrs ago. Where is River Basin's distillery at in MS? Their address shows a small warehouse just off Poydras near the Superdome.
