My favorites are my own Lenses Sony 14mm 1.8 GM, Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, Voigtländer APO- Lanthar 35mm 2.0 Aspherical, Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8, Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0, Sony 135mm 1.8 GM, Sony 200-600mm 5.6-6.3 G and many of my analog adapted Canon FDn, Leica R and Tamron SP adaptall-2 Lenses used on Sony A7RIV and A7RIVA.

My fav lens right now for both versatility & sharpeness is the recent Sigma 28-75 2.8. Lighter than the Tamron & sharper. The Sigma 24-70 is bulky & almost 2 x's the weight.

I chose 28-75mm g2 for my first lens for sony a7iv, a very good lens indeed.

I have 3 of the 5! Had them all with my a7iii and the just got the a7iv!!! I can’t wait

I am in love with the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 😍it’s just crazy

In terms of the tamron zooms I use the 17-28/2.8 & the 70-300. Both are great lenses - one for the ultrawide & the other for long reach. It fits in a waist pouch & on the sony r4 easy to get a 400-500 reach through cropping. Both are very ergonomic to use. I have the sony 90 macro as well but got an old sigma 180/5.6 1:2 macro - apo & adapted it. It is a small 400+gms lens and gives great detail & rendering. They are not easy to find but if you enjoy MF & macro a joy to use (abt 200$ for a good copy). I love the samyang 85/1.4 but have the mf cine version. However the other samyang 135mm f2 or 2.2 cine is one of the best 135s. It ranks optically with the zeiss - sigma and has a very close mfd. I have both as cine lenses and the MF & declicked apertures are very smooth. They have just announced an af version - slightly lighter better balanced & an mfd of 69 - however at more than double the MF cine versions but half of the sony 135/1.8. I think you will love this lens. The sigma I series primes is also special & the 65/2 is one of my favorites. The fe mount lens system is really evolving!

I think the ones we own are always the best and smartest choices. My 5 lenses, Tamron 17-28 2.8 / Tamron 28-200 2.8-5.6 / Sony 35 1.4 GM / Zeiss 50 1.4 / Sigma 100-400 DG DN 5-6.3.

I like your 17-28mm F2,8 would like it even better if it went 16-55mm :D That would stay on my camera whenever I didn't have a specific purpose. Sony could build that sort of thing with just 9-10 cm in length!

@@Pharesm if you want 2.8, small and with large range is fisically Impossible. Look at tamron 35-150, great but big and heavy.

Here's a lesser known lens for nature for the Sony. The Canon EF 300mm f4 IS L lens. It's image stabilized and adapted to my A7iv with the MC-11 it is fast focusing and responsive. I'm getting bright beautiful low iso images with buttery backgrounds. Without going to the big expensive f4 primes this is the smallest lightest f4 prime with some reach for nature that I've found for my Sony and Canon systems. I'm enjoying it with my R6 also. Thanks for the video Stefan.. I just bought the 35-150 f2. Gets delivered Monday.. and use the 35 f1.4 GM with the 85 1.5 sigma for my portraits.. just need a wide angle puppy....20mm G maybe?

So many great lenses these days

I personally prefer the Viltrox 85 to the Samyang. Much better build quality feel, and the focus is faster. Last I checked they were the same price but that may have changed. I ordered both from Amazon about 2 years ago and ended up keeping the Viltrox.

Great video! I feel like I really should get a native macro. I have an adapted Canon 100/2.8 but the autofocus isn't great. My favourites are primes, mainly the 35/1.8 and the 85/1.8 which both are lightweight and offer amazing image quality. And I have the 200-600 for birding.

Great content! I am trying to get into photography and I am looking to buy a7iv as my first camera. What would be the best all round lens that I can buy for all kinds of photography without breaking the bank?

The Tamron 35-150 changed my lens usage quite a bit. That is one amazing lens.

Hey, I am planning to buy this lens but other than this I only have 14mm 2.8 prime lens and 50mm lens so do you think I'll miss 20-35mm range??

@@Manawaralam Depends mostly on how you use your camera. In my opinion, 14 mm will be too wide when you need something wider than 35mm. There is big difference between 14mm and 35 mm. You might need extra lens. Something like 20mm 1.8 will be good instead if you need something wider than 35. It is just enough wide & not too distorted unlike 14mm lens. But that’s my opinion, it might not be the case in your style of shooting.

@@Manawaralam I have the 16-35 GM but so far have not needed it for the events I cover. There are less expensive options for this though. The 20 G or the Tamron 17-28 f2.8. I have the 14 GM but I find it too wide for pairing up with the 35-150 (at least for theater and dance events I photograph).

I was considering it, combining it with 16-35. What stops me is that for landscape the 35 is too long, so I will be swapping very often between these two around 35 mm bothers me.

Currently, I use Sony A7IV, 1635GM, 70200GM2, and Samyang FE 50II, 85 1.4 and 135 1.8. Tamron 2875 G2 or 2470GM2 would be nice to add on later in 2022.

For me.. the perfect MACRO and tele prime for portraits is the SIGMA 105mm 2.8 DG DN Art.. optical performance are stellar and it’s much cheaper than the Sony 90 Macro… you lose the OSS in lens, but now all Sony bodies have the IBIS… for me it’s the best choice!

90mm macro ''for the price there's really not much that can compare'' ....hmm the Sigma 105mm macro comes to mind. Stellar lens for similar price, perhaps slightly cheaper actually. Great video!

I have the Tamron 28-200mm, the Sigma 150-600, and I'm considering a Tamron 17-28. That way I pretty much have the gamut covered.

My favorite lens is the Sony 135mm F1.8 GM. However, the Tamron 35-150mm is much more practical for a lot of the photography that I do.

Been waiting on my Tamron 35-150 for two months

IMO I really like the sharpness off the Samyang 24mm 1.8 and it’s a 1/3 price of the Sony. It also seems sharper and as good if not better on AF focus.

The Sony 24-105 f/4 G drum does not get banged enough, so let me bang that a bit more ;). Amazing lens, vastly underrated. I just could not justify the cost of the Sony 100-400 so I went for the Sigma 100-400 instead at far less than half the price (and still lighter and cheaper than the Tamron 150-500 or even the Sigma 150-600). The size and weight of the Tamron 35-150 is relative, it can save you carrying around two lenses (the 28-75 plus the 70-180)... great to have the option. Not for me, 35 is not wide enough on a standard zoom and I'd have to also have a 16-35 with me... too heavy.

I only have 4: the New Tamron 35-150, I go to Africa so I have the Tamron 150-500, I had and still use the Fujinon MK -18-55 (27 - 82 FF) in SUper35 mode, and the small 28-60 that I had and still use on occasion but I interested in that 90MM Macro Lens.

The Tamron 28-200 is the best versatile zoom I have ever used. Have you compared it to your 35-150? It really trumps the 35-150 in every respect except aperture. But since I shoot outside daytime 95% of the time I don't really miss the speed of the 2-2.8. My other 4 lenses are the 100-400, 90 macro, 24 1.4 wide angle, and 12-24 zoom.

What lens would u recommend for shooting stationary car videos and some photos?

Thank you for giving us your opinion on these lens! Currently I have and love my Sigma 24-70 F2.8L. Waiting for my Tamron 35-150 to come in. And trying to decide on which higher magnification zoom, the Sony 100-400 GM, or the Tamron 150-500. I do like that the Sony has the option for teleconverters.

I am quite interested in your eyes' close-up photos. What is the best aperture and how do you source enough light? I used a ring light that is attached at the end of the lens and reflects on the retinas. I used Sony Zeiss 55mm with a Meike adapter of 16mm.

I am finally upgrading from my aps-c camera to a sony a7iV. I only have the samyang 85mm for full frame, so I am thinking of buying one additional lens. I mainly shoot portraits of my dog, and action shots of my dog. I would also like to start shooting horse portraits and riding. which one would you advise ? I am in doubt between the 28-70 and the 35-150mm. (or open for suggestions) thanks!

A lot of overlaps in these must haves :) Surprised that there was not 16-35mm also. If I had to live with just 5 of my lenses I think I would do the 16-35mm F2.8, 24-70mm F2.8, 100-400mm GM, 35mm F1.8 and then either the 85mm1.8 or 90mm macro. Although.... what I will say is that I do love a good superzoom also - especially when travelling / hiking.

My top 5 for pro work are: 90mm macro, 55 Zeiss, 14mm GM, 85mm 1.8 and for fun, the 24mm Laowa probe lens. (For the record, my favorite lens is the 24mm GM)

I just purchased the Tamron 35-150 but it doesn't look like Ill be getting it any time soon. No one from any company can even ball park a ship date. Oh well. I guess the anticipation will make it all worth it

Do you have a recommendation for wide angle/exterior architecture?

Okay one more question: can I use the tamron 28-75mm di III vxdg2 on an A7iv? Or which would be better for videoing 4 feet from my chair?

I am just upgrading to full frame. Since I knew I would buy either the Tamron 28-75 or the Sigma 28-70 I startet with the Sigma 24 f2 before I even got my a7iv. I love that lens, the design, build quality and aperture ring. I ended up with the Sigma 28-70. I have also bought the 100-400 GM and 1.4 teleconverter. I have own the Sony 85 f1.8 for a long time. I have sold a lot of APS-C lenses, still own 3.

Here is mine, Sigma DGDN 16-28 mm F2.8 or 14-24mm F2.8 (one of these), Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8, Sony 200-600mm , Sigma DG DN 85mm F1.4, I think these 4 will be enough for me to take for almost every situation but if I have to take another one it will be Sigma 40mm F1.4.

So would the in body stabilization cover the 35-150 Tamron being the lens doesn’t have it?

One other inexpensive and ridiculously lightweight lens for the Sony system is the Tamron 70-300mm RXD. It's so enjoyable to carry and hike with and takes beautiful colorful images with lots of resolution and detail. It's the lightest weight and best value nature lens I've found for my Sony system.

Tamron 28-200 for me. I love its close focus, wide f/2.8 and light weight. I'm thinking of the Sigma 100-400 or Tamron 150-500 to replace my Sony 70-300G A mount lens and adapter.

35mm f1.4 GM that i bought today, second the 90mm 2.8 macro, third the Helios 44-2 f/2

The focus breathing is disgusting. I have the 24mm gm with focus breathing compensation it becomes close to a 30mm. I also have the 50 f1.2 gm but the breathing is frustrating for vid

Thanks. I can definitely relate to your video. I own A7iv and 3 lenses that you mentioned. 1) Sony 90mm macro (my favorite), 2) Tamron 35-150mm, 3) Tamron 150-500mm. Used to own Tamron 28-75mm G1, sold it for 35-150mm. I like these lenses a lot. What do you think about Tamron 150-500mm vs. Sony 100-400 + TC? When I bought the Tamron, I didn't think about the Sony+TC option. With 2X TC, it goes up to 800mm!!! BTW, I also have Tamron 17-28mm. I guess I am a Tamron fanboy :)

@@sulev111 Yes, I missed 28-75 sometimes for its size and weight. 35-150 is much bigger and heavier. However, the quality is excellent.

As a beginner just rocking 2 lenses sigma 24-70f2.8 and sigma 85mm f1.4

I recommend also getting a wide angle lens.

stick to zv1. full frame lenses usually don't have near focus distance for showcasing products.

I like these nice lenses from Sigma and Tamron only because they keep the prices for the Sony lenses down and the quality up. I use only GM lenses from Sony. 24, 35, 85 and 70-200GM2

Vintage Nikkor ai-s, Takumar and Zeiss adapted & Modern Voigtlander

My choice is this combo fitting better to my needs with only 4 lenses : - Tamron 17-28 mm F/2.8 Di III RXD - Tamron 35-150 mm F2-2.8 Di III VXD (i agree it is excellent) - Sigma 150-600 F5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports - Sigma 105mm F2.8 DG DN Macro

@ Not at all. But mostly because I'm still waiting for my A7iv to arrive! I have lenses but no camera! 😏 I had inherited a bunch of Nikon Cameras and lenses after my father passed, but they are a little out of date. I'm currently just using a D600 from a decade ago with a 28-300mm f3.5-5.8. It still gets some good pictures on it, but I'm looking forward to the upgrade. The autofocus alone looks incredible. So ya, it could show up any day, but so far, I just got lenses in boxes. ;)

@ Thank you. Sadly, I actually lost him just under 6 months after my mother passed. Both cancer. Losing them both so fast was pretty awful. Thank you for the condolences. And ya, waiting for a new camera body sucks. But at least it's been waiting over winter when I wasn't going to get great shots anyway. But springs' a comin' so hopefully the wait won't be too much longer. My parents both loved photography too, think it's genetic. ;)

1:40 It's the camera that analyzes a low light image and find the focus plane. The lense only reacts to the camera's order. You're going to confuse newbies.

Larger apertures alone are incomparable. 35-150 Wins. Of course more expensive and heavier in weight.

I own 4 of the 5. I don’t have the 85 but don’t need it with the 90.

Hey brother what would you recommend for someone doing both photography and video in terms of a single camera and lens(es) if budget/cost was unlimited? So far I am thinking either Sony Alpha 1 (A1), Sony A7IV, or A7SIII . Ignore prices, I looking to buy once/cry once on most versatile camera & lens(es) setup.

This would be my wishlist if money was no concern. You got everything covered with (some of, if not) the best performing lenses for each and every category. Of course you could go for the a 1, but in my opinion it is overkill for a hybrid consumer shooter and even the needs of a lot of professionals out there are easily satisfied by the performance the a 7 iv gives them. So even though you said "money is unlimited" - save some bucks on the body and invest it in high performing glass.

@@kilianpangolin5092 Now I am closed in on either A7IV, A1, Nikon Z9, or Canon R3 as my first camera to use for both photo and videos. Also like the idea of a single lens so something like the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 DI III VXD might fit well at least on the Sony camera I think. What would you do in my shoes out of these choices if cost was not a factor to consider?

My 5 favourite lens are: Sony 135 GM 1.8, Sony 50 GM 1.2, Sony 35 GM 1.4, sigma 85 Art DN 1.4 and lastly the Sony 24 GM 1.4. I mostly do weeding and portraits and I just much prefer prime lens.

Keep in mind, that all third party lenses didnt work well with active steady shot mode on. The Crop is bigger and the stabilisation poorer compared to sony lenses. If you film frequently handhelt, ita important to know this.

mirrorless cameras came with the promise of making everything lighters. unfortunately we are not getting there with still bulky lenses.

Still waiting in Europe for the Tamron 35-150 to be delivered. I prepaid in November.

@@wl5609 I have mine now. It showed up in March after I put a deposit on it in December. I would have had it faster but I live in Canada and the convoys were blocking the borders and impeding shipping. But I do understand that it's hard to get one of them at the moment. Sold out everywhere. They do trickle in, but demand for them is really high.

@@wl5609 Gotcha. Ya, I live on Vancouver Island and it's a paradise here. It's a photographers dream! Downtown Victoria is like living in a museum from the 1800s. Get tons of bird pics like eagles and peacocks and herons at one of the local parks. Ocean views everywhere, get into the forest with 5 minutes of driving, fresh water lakes, a small mountain to get some great view from, etc etc. I tend to take the camera out along with my drone and just have a field day. Absolutely love it here!

Question should I get a a7iv with a kit lens or for the same price I can get a7iii with 2 year insurance with the 28-75 f2.8 G2?

Date your cameras, marry your lenses. A7iv is a big upgrade but if you don't have decent glass, it won't be actualized. That's a tough one but the a7iii won me awards and served me well for years. A7iv is next Gen awesomeness.

You might even might some Sony a7riii camera bodies on sale or fairly new. But if not that camera, I would go with the a7iii and get a good lens. Who knows, later when you're ready to upgrade, the a7iv may be relatively cheap compared to today.

My Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE has an alloy body.

I think 24mm is the best for replicating what the human eye sees -- I love it for my virtual walking tours, though I prefer the 20mm to make up for the crop after image stabilization. I did not realize how compact the Sony 100-400mm GM lens is after watching this video. That is on the radar for my next buy.

I actually don't have any of these... Sony 24 105/ 200 600/ 90 mm Tamron etc...

You forgot the Tamron 28-20mm f/2.8-5.6

Why should you buy the 28 75 g2 over the sigma 24 70?. It's 24 vs 28 mm

Tamron is lighter. But from all accounts Sigma is a little bit sharper and obviously wider, but weight means a lot to some folks.

I have the Tamron, it's a bit sharper and lighter. However, some like the rendering of the Samyang better. Plus, you will probably miss those 4mm on the wide side more than the 5mm on the telephoto side. I have the Sony 20mm 1.8 for the wide end, so the Tamron works for me, but maybe for you, the Samyang. Hard to know.

What happened to the prices? Is it me or they just disappeared after the first lens? 😜

There are a few things you can do to help if it runs hot. See my video on it. Haven't had an issue since the first week I got it.

The only lens you need is Sigma 24-70 - F2.8 to partner up with your A7IV

I'm so opposite from you ;D My first choice lenses are the 14mm F1.8 GM and the 24mm F1.4 GM, followed by the constant aperture F4 24-105 with optical stabilization. Those 3 cover 90+% of what I do. *I think your first lens is neither short enough nor long enough* - Maybe the quality is fabulous, but I don't want a short zoom that only starts at 28mm. 18-55mm, I could do with! Second lens a 90mm Macro - its nice - I'd get that if I already have everything that I have an actual need for. And $1k burning a hole in my pocket... And I'm not really interested in duplicating the zillions of ultra-compressed portrait shots. A 400mm Tele, I don't need for anything I do. if I want to shoot birds, I use a rifle ;-) Joking, I'm vegetarian ;-) Nothing against birds, I like them but I wouldn't take pictures of them. Ton's of people already are schlepping15 pounds of glass around... Not my idea of a good time. Landscapes and Landscape time lapses I find kinda fun. Your last lens is getting close to paparazzi territory. I'd refuse to even carry something that size, unless some guy is following me with a golf cart to bring that kind of stuff along :)

And where is the Sony 24105f4?? It's a very sharp, universal, and most underrated Sony full-frame lens. Together with the 1635f4 you need no other lens for traveling, landscape or street photography

Fantastic lens! I don't think it's underrated at all. Hard to justify the price these days though with all the offerings imo
