What is a Metering Device - Specific Types of Metering Devices used in HVAC Refrigeration: Thermostatic Expansion Valve - Also referred to as the TEV or TXV for short. The thermostatic expansion valve is used in many HVAC applications including use in chillers for chilled water systems.
The piston (fixed orifice) and TXV (Thermostatic Expansion Valve) are the two most common metering devices in use today, with some modern systems utilizing an electronically controlled metering device called an EEV (Electronic Expansion Valve)
A metering device provides a pressure drop point. This device has two jobs:
It holds refrigerant back in a condensed state
It feeds refrigerant into the evaporator.
When high-pressure liquid enters a metering device, pressure starts to drop as the temperature remains the same until it reaches saturation pressure-temperature. At this time, both the pressure and temperature continue to drop to the evaporator pressure-temperature (Table 2).
Low-pressure liquid that is leaving the metering device is boiling at saturated pressure-temperature. The process of a refrigerant changing its state (from a liquid to a vapor) in the metering device is called flash gas. Flash gas is what cools the refrigerant liquid in the metering device. A system with no subcooling has more gas that is flashed and less capacity.

    m nadeem I would only replace the piston with the same number piston. If you can get the number of the piston the model number of the indoor coil and the outdoor unit and make sure they all match. Have you checked your superheat in that unit? If your superheat is high then you need to add refrigerant unless your high side pressure is excessively hot. In that case you probably have a restriction in the liquid line. Check my video on liquid line filter dryer‘s I explain how to troubleshoot that.

    Please can you discuss what is the different of external equalizer and internal equalizer, and what applications can use external and internal equalizer.

  • @AirConAcademy

    @AirConAcademy

    4 жыл бұрын

    The internal equalizing valves are used when the manufacturer does not expect a large pressure drop on the evaporator coil and an external equalizing line is used when the manufacture expects a pressure drop across the evaporator coil. So typically on larger units they may use an external equalized TXV. One thing to remember is you always replace a TXV or any other part with the exact replacement. I hope this helped.

  • @AirConAcademy

    Yes R22 is gone in a lot of places but not here in the US. I know a lot of students that still go to units that have R22. Here it seems like 410a is going to be replaced with 454b? what is it being replaced with where you are? and yes some times it is EEV but some other people use EXV. Doing this it is so hard to get everything like every one sees it because like in your case there is always someone out there that has seen it a bit differently. Like some people here say TXV and others will say TEV? I tell my students do not get hung up on only one way to say it because someone else will say it a bit differently. Thank you for your input!!! it is always great to hear what other techs out there are running in to! AND Thank you for watching!!!!

  • @AirConAcademy

    wildan sajise Do all of the boxes freeze when they forget to turn the fan on? Does each box have an individual fan switch or this one fan switch turn All of the fans off? If it is only one or maybe two that freeze when the fan is off. It sounds like maybe the EPR valve might be leaking by? Or it is not set properly? I was wondering what turns the compressor off? Is it a pressure switch? Or a temperature switch? Because if the compressor is not shutting off that might do it also.

    Thanks teacher I'd like to ask you weather I can operate the unit by txv and without a liquid receiver ? Is that possible

  • @AirConAcademy

    @AirConAcademy

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes you can operate an air conditioning unit without a liquid receiver. But it is recommended that you have one. If the lines are long. Meaning the suction and liquid line. And if you have a TXV as a metering device. Do not forget. If you have a TXV the unit needs to be charged by sub cooling so you have to have a good amount of sub cooling. Typically in the installation manual it will tell you what the sub cooling needs to be and it would tell you if you need a Liquid receiver. .

    A cap tube for r22 can it handle 410 freon ? The same? As r22?

  • @AirConAcademy

    @AirConAcademy

    2 жыл бұрын

    No, and it is not about the pressure. It is because of the size. A metering device designed for 410 a is approximately 15% smaller than for R 22. So you need to either make it longer or have a smaller diameter capillary tube.

    Thanks. Greatly appreciate it, So the Evap temp for AC is 40 Deg Fahrenheit , What is the Evap temp for Coolers and Freezers? Is there a reason for AC Evap to be 40?

  • @AirConAcademy

    @AirConAcademy

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for sending the questioning/comment, in an air conditioning system yes you would like the evaporator to be 40°F because the air temperature is going to be approximately 75°. This way you will have a temperature difference that is large enough and allow good heat transfer. If we are talking about a freezer, remember not everything freezes at 32° so we must maintain the freezer at a temperature of much lower than 32°. We may want to maintain the evaporator anywhere between 5°F to maybe 10 below zero Fahrenheit. It all depends on what it is that we are trying to do with the evaporator. In a cooler, I believe you might be talking about a water cooler? I am not sure you would want the temperature to be between 35 to 40° so the water will be nice and cool when you drink it but not cold enough where it will freeze. If you are talking about a cooler for flowers and candy you may want to keep the temperature around 45°F but then we have to worry about the humidity. We do not want to dry the flowers and plants out. We want to make sure that we maintain enough moisture and humidity in there to make them last a long time. I know this maybe a long explanation but I hope it makes sense. Thank you for watching!

    i have 1 question with r134a the suction pressure go down and the evaporator pressure go up, this case how to fix or what happen?

  • @AirConAcademy

    @AirConAcademy

    3 жыл бұрын

    That is an interesting question. With any refrigerant when the suction pressure drops the evaporator saturation temperature will drop. Sometimes what happens is that there's not enough refrigerant in the system so as the suction pressure drops and the evaporator temperature drops the superheat is going to go up. What you might be looking at might be the superheat increasing. If you look at the PT chart as your pressure drops the saturation temperature also drops. Which is normal but I think you might be looking at the temperature at the outlet of the coil which is what we do to look at superheat. I'm not sure if this explains your question if it does not let me know. But if you notice your superheat is going to increase. Good luck thank you for setting the questioning.

    @@ngornbunpa6092 do you have a suction or liquid line filter dryer? Check to make sure that these are not plugged up. The liquid line dryer you check by seeing if there's a temperature difference between the inlet and the outlet of the dryer. The suction line dryer you check to see if there's a pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet of the drier. Also what type of metering device do you have? Maybe if it is a TXV it might be failing? Please let me know what you found with the dryers.

    wildan sajise When you changed the TXV, did you pump down? Or recover the refrigerant? Do you have enough refrigerant in the system? Do you have a sight glass? What is your sub cooling? And in the freezer where you just changed the TXV what is your superheat reading now? And what is the suction pressure or what is the pressure in that evaporator now? Also, what type of refrigerant are you using?

  • @AirConAcademy

    I was reading your massage again. If it is maintaining the proper temperature then you may not have a big problem. is the evaporator clogging with ice? The suction line being frozen only means that the temperature is below 32 degrees F. or 0 Celsius. I would insulate the suction line better. If the unit is keeping the correct temperature you may not have a problem. please let me know how it works out.
