#6 you are NOT their friends! You should be friendly, but you are NOT your students' friend. You are their teacher, and they are your students. Friends rip on each other, they goof off with each other, they hang out, etc. All things teachers should NOT do with their students! You are an authority figure!

I'd hate to be in your class. Being a hardline authoritarian would get you nowhere in my school excepted hated by all students.

Thomas, kids have to face reality, eventually. School may be the first place they learn discipline, and they're going to have to learn it eventually, so why not get it now?

Thomas Ellenwood : nobody said authoritarian, but you have to be respected by your students otherwise your class will be a complete chaos, and nobody even the students themselves will be happy with you. You are not a dictator nor a friend but an EDUCATOR.

@I_was_wrong ask Harry Wong about that. Be friendly, but you are NOT their friend. Friends hang out. Friends connect on social media. Friends text, etc.

Excellent call on the assumptions! That was a big one for me because I taught 4th graders. Surely they can line up correctly because they've been doing it for years, right? Wrong!!!

I learned to not make assumptions the hard way my first year. So many lessons went south because I assumed they knew how to do certain things.

Oh man, I cringe to think of the mistakes I made this past year. My biggest problem was definitely consistency with classroom management because I would try something and then see it wasn't working and just up and change it. I was a hot mess! But, the kids learned what they needed to and thought I was the best anyway!😆 These tips are spot on!

I'm a 30 year veteran and you hit it out of the ballpark! I would also add that a lot of teachers don't know how to adjust the energy level of their students. If they're climbing the walls, learn how to get them back in their desks. If they're all asleep, learn how to get their attention so they wake up.

I found this list so helpful, especially the tip to plan the lesson around the standard, not the other way around. Pinterest is so overwhelming, it's easy to get sucked into the "cute" lessons and forget the main objective! This new first grade teacher thanks you!

I find not being consistent might be somewhat unavoidable during first-year teaching. I remember when I first started last September, I had my class management plan all set up in my head. What I did not account for was my students. I first tried reflection sheets, which they did not take seriously. Next I tried the three-strike rule, until they figured out they could get away with being disruptive twice before getting in trouble. Detentions worked some of the time, but only if I had a serious conversation with my students to find out the root of the problem. By the end of February, I finally figured out what worked well for me, and planned on sticking to it to the end of the year, until COVID shut down our schools. Do not get discouraged if your class management doesn't work out the first time. You need to figure out what works best for you, so that you CAN be consistent in the future!

Mistake #2: Most new teachers are really forced to be on many committees. It is forced upon them by the principal. Or to volunteer to give inservice presentations. We can't win with the school administration doesn't help a teacher succeed.

I'm a substitute teacher and I was so frustrated at the beginning because students kept sitting down on the floor to do their work. It turned out schools now allow students to do that for comfort. Back in my days this was unthinkable!

One, I agree with not doing too much; you have enough to do every year, not just first year. But you lose credibility with your look I'm cool backward hat. Take off your hat in the classroom, you're an adult. Don't be obsessed with standards. Teach valuable skills; problem-solving and collaboration.
