    ARE you up to speed on the voltage problems that are burning up boards and chips? especially asus boards. there is a beta bios came out a few DAYS AGO hoping to adress this.

  • @SkatterBencher

    @SkatterBencher

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm a little up to speed. I posted a reply on another comment a couple of days ago (see below): ------------------------------------ I've been trying to follow the news about the burning up a little bit (including some of the in-depth pieces). Generally, I'm a bit annoyed with the coverage because there's still lots of speculation and jumping to conclusions. Also, I'm not a fan of calling people "lazy" without evidence. It implies intentional malfeasance. My opinion is that 100mV difference will never be the difference between "guaranteed burnout" and "absolute safety", unless there is a specific hardware design flaw causing that. Going by the physical damage, it's clear some thermal protection is failing. That could related to a dysfunctional physical sensor in the CPU or some edge-case SMU firmware bug, or something different. But what's it's not is +100mV :). I look at the BIOS voltage limitations as a way to show customers something's actively being done about it and to shift the conversation to "it's those darned overclockers again". You know ... it's not "in spec" but "out of spec" behavior. I'm not confident we'll ever know the true root cause of this issue. And, honestly, I don't really care that much about the root cause being known by the public. I'm just a bit worried that this will further detract AMD from actively investing resources to enable great overclocking experiences.

    Very good! Voltage vsoc in automatic defined by EXPO not exaggeratedly high? Considering you don't have the latest bios that limits vsoc?

  • @SkatterBencher

    @SkatterBencher

    Жыл бұрын

    The EXPO profile does not contain any information about VDDCR_SOC. It only includes DRAM VDD, VDDQ, and VPP voltage specification. The increased SOC voltage is done by motherboard auto-rules to support higher EXPO frequency out of the box. While it sounds like "motherboard auto-rule" means the motherboard vendors decided the voltage on their own, the rules were made after discussions with AMD. If I understand it right, the guidance was IMC=VDD=VDDQ was the guideline (and IMC voltage is 1:1 with VDDCR_SOC voltage rail).

    Great info! I read on a forum some guy recommended bumping LLC for the cpu voltage to the max for 7800x3d to get a bigger stable curve optimizer negative, he got -39. What do you think about this? He claimed it should maximize the already so locked down voltage. Would this be a good idea? Harmful?

  • @SkatterBencher

    @SkatterBencher

    Жыл бұрын

    Logically it makes sense. The main function of VRM LLC is to have a controlled the Vdroop which is the voltage drop when going from idle to full load. A low LLC will yield a larger Vdroop (and larger undershoot), which means that the effective voltage will be lower. A higher LLC will means a smaller Vdroop and thus higher effective voltage. If you use Curve Optimizer, you try to undervolt the CPU. The main challenge is to find an undervolt that large enough so the PB algorithm boosts as high as possible without inducing instability due to too low voltage. A steep LLC will yield higher minimum voltages, so possibly higher Curve Optimizer values. The main drawback of a high LLC is that the Vdroop may be too small, so you have high minimum voltages under high loads and possibly large voltage overshoots. It is generally not recommended to have too high LLC, however I don't know how "dangerous" it is. It's actually a topic I've been thinking about doing some research on. Hope this helps.

    Hey man, i stumbled across your video and i have a question. I recently bought and build my new system with a Ryzen 7 7800x3d, now im running into a problem with my idle temps, under full load my Peak core voltage is around 1.08-1.10, and while idling it sits around 1.12-1.1.13. do you have any idea how i can fix this? I've tried nearly everything from updating bios, reseating cpu cooling, re applying thermal paste, power plans, updating bios etc but i can't seem to get my idle voltage down. Right now the cpu idles around 53-55 celcius with a 360mm corsair h150i, in game it won't even go above 65 celcius and under full cinebench load this changes to around 77-80 celcius. which in my eyes, does seem like allright temperatures... I've got no clue why my idle voltage is higher than my full load voltage... if you have a clue... let me know

    ngl, I don't think your 107eclk + PBO was really stable, especially not in mid core workloads. The best I can get stable was 106.25eclk on direct die. That said I could run obituary high eclk of 107+ too with over the top fclk to like 19750 (cb r23) / 7740 (cb r20) scores with PBO enabled. However you certainly won't pass y-cruncher VST or some medium CPU load stress tests. Cause the required voltage and very low temp ain't reachable at this point. Even with Vcore offset, you run into voltage/ thermal limit on direct die cooling. So there is no way you could get like 5.2ghz all core stable without using a static OC and like 1.28Vcore. That said, you won't be able to cool it cause the silicon gap filler above the CPU cores is just too hard of a thermal insulator without a chiller or LN2...

    TLDR: AMD saves the best CCDs with highest peak frequency for Ryzen 9 CCD0 and uses lower quality CCDs for Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5s. The frequency limitation for the 7800X3D isn't due to cooling or voltage, it's the inherent capability of the chips used in the product.

    Thanks for the video, before I touch anything, I just need some help please. I just bought and put together ryzen 7 7800x3d and Gigabyte b650m ds3h with memory capable of doing 6000 mhz. I updated to the latest f6c bios from gigabyte right away when I put together everything. I have a 1000watt corsair power supply. My issue is it seems like the cpu is being limited to only 1.1 volts from what I can see using bios info and hwinfo64. I have not touched the ram with xmp profile yet because I don't know why the cpu voltage is only limited to 1.1 volts. In cinebench max clocks I get are 4.8ghz on all cores and it stays consistent (scores around 17,775). However, when gaming the core clocks seem to fluctuate with some cores sometimes going down to 3-4ghz range. Do you guys know what the problem is? I don't know what settings are making the processor do that. Again, my bios settings are still completely stock as of now. Thanks for any help with this. Stock Bios info reads: CPU Vcore: 0.882v CPU Vcore misc: 1.161v CPU Vcore SOC: 1.053v CPU frequency ≈4221 mhz BCLK ≈100 mhz Memory frequency ≈ 4800mhz

    @Megatrance9000 I found that setting the soc volts manually in the bios to 1.2 volts with PBO per core all negative at 20 value keeps the clocks on the cpu at 5050 mhz with memory set at 6000mhz using either expo or xmp. Different fluctuations in cores speeds are apparently normal from what I've read online because most games don't fully utilize all 8 cores on it equally. This is of course my personal settings that worked for me. I hope this helps.

Also he doesn't mention the SOC voltage needs to be 1.25 or lower or you will fry your CPU. Lastly, he does not mention that you need to upgrade your bios as there are fixes that prevent the CPU from being fried. Very dishonest video.

  • @Joey-bq4hu

    "Dishonest" is a bit harsh - especially since in this video and in many of his other videos he makes note to clearly mention that "this is not the whole picture", and that these setting are specific to his cpu and not to copy his settings as your cpu quality and optimal settings will vary. In his longer video of this short video, he makes that statement at least 4 different times: note one of those at 16:52 - 17:05. In other videos, he states that silicon quality varies on each cpu, and he has mentioned in still other videos the outstanding quality of some of his personal cpus as well, noting that "this is a particularly good overclocking cpu", and he's mentionec BIOS updates as well, which is something most of us know but he doesn't have to qualify it in every single video, especially a 5 minute video in which every little thing can't be mentioned as there is a time limit. I guess you could through in to update the chipset drivers from AMD and not the board manufacturer also - where does it end?! These is HIS settings on THIS hardware, and though it is for "entertainment" purposes, one can also learn from it and adjust those setting to their own setup. I suppose that because my chip is not as good as his, nor I don't have a mobo that has Asynchronous mode, that it completely nullifies his results!
