I did this! I'm a 68 year old retired woman afraid of electricity, faced with a kitchen ceiling fluorescent fixture that needed a new ballast. I scouted out DIY KZread videos and loved the use of this wire connector. It looked doable. I ordered the kit, reviewed the video once more, and now I have really bright, lower cost lighting. This is a great video, perfect detail, and it went perfectly with my 4 light fixture.

This does work. I did wire it wrong based on the wrong you tube videos but once I got the right one... easy as pie. They should have turned the light on at the end. LED is the way the truth and the light!

I just replaced 12 fluorescent lights in the garage for these LED tubes 5000k clears. The light output is amazing. Do not 🚫 do clears unless you have covers. Absolutely use the frosted for open light fixtures. Trust me. Making My Garage Great Again 2020. 😎🇺🇲

Glad your conversion was a success! We agree, that frosted dual end powered LED T8 tubes are the way to go in almost all applications where non-lens fluorescent fixtures are retrofitted, unless the fixture is mounted very high on the ceiling 🙂 We love helping make Garages Great Again 😃

For our connectors shown in the video at 8:39 it doesn't matter which port or order the neutral or hot is connected. What matters greatly is that you ⚠️DO NOT ⚠️ connect the neutral and hot into the same connector.

You did not mention shunted vs. non-shunted tombstones. I've had salesmen tell me that I probably have to replace the tombstones since most T8 fixtures have shunted tombstones. Can you give me some clarity on this? I really want to convert the lights at my business, and this video is really helpful.

Great video, thanks for posting. I subscribed. I do have a question. I know with fluorescent technology, Non-Shunted were used for Dimming/Programmed/Rapid start Ballasts. Those fixtures with instant start ballasts are shunted tombstones. Confirm I am correct on that. Now your video tells us Type B LED tubes requires Non-Shunted. What do Type A tubes require? and what do Type C tubes require? Can you help?

We have found from our experience that there tends to be shunted tombstones used in the majority of fluorescent fixtures due to the nature of how the power flows through the fluorescent tubes regardless of the ballast type. In this video we are using Dual end powered LED T8 Tubes. Not to be confused with Single end powered LED T8 tubes which require a different wiring all together. I will just focus on the Dual end. Dual end powered Type-B LED T8 tubes require the ballast to be bypassed / removed as each tube has its own LED driver to regulate the power to the LEDs in the tube. Dual end powered Type-A LED T8 tubes require the ballast to remain to proved power to these type of LED tubes. Dual end powered Type-C tubes requires the replacement of the fluorescent ballast with a LED driver. So the type of tombstones doesn't necessarily define what Type of LED T8 tube is required but more importantly how the LED tube type will need power. So its important to know what type of tube you are using and if it is single or dual end powered. All our EZ LED T8 kits we sell are dual end powered. Hope this helps 🙂

Great video. Simple and easy. Then I look at what I have and shake my head. I have a 2ft fixture that I removed the ballast from. The continuity tester says I have 2 non-shunted tombstones. Great. But wait there is more. 1 tombstone has a white wire in the #1 slot and a yellow wire in the #4 slot ??? The other tombstone has a yellow wire coming from the #1 slot and a black wire coming from the #4 slot???? My confusion increases. Maybe you can help me.

As along as all the wires in the tombstones on one side of the fixture are Neutral (White) and connected together by a wire nut or our handy multi-port wire connector and all the wires in the tombstone on the opposite side are Black (Hot) and are all connected together by a wire nut or our multi-port wire connector the color of the wire makes no difference. We used shunted sockets in this video. However, not all fixtures are the same so it is important to understand the electrical wiring so you can identify what type of sockets your fixture has. I'm curious as to how the tombstones are wired in a double end bulb install. If a tombstone had to be replaced does it matter if only one contact is working or do both contacts have to be connected to the hot. Or neutral. In other words, do both pins on the end of the double end bulb have to be in a tombstone that has wired going to each contact?

For best results it's always best to make sure the wiring in the tombstones is done correctly. But we have noticed that with our tubes one pin could be in the tombstone and still turn on. For instance, we have experienced that you can miss getting both pins in the tombstone with only one making contact and the tube lights fine. You definitely don't want to leave the tube installed like this as it is a potential hazard. Again, it is best to wire the tombstones correctly.

The color of the wires are going to not matter as much. I have 4- 48", 4 bulb fluorescent fixtures and I bought an LED replacement kit that removes the ballast and replaces with non-shunted tombstones. I purchased Phillips LED bulbs from Home Depot and the light does not work. Checked all connections OK. On another fixture, I tried the direct wire method, removing the ballast as you show and tried another Phillips bulb and that doesn't work. Power is ok. Am I using the wrong type of bulbs??

If you followed the wiring diagrams it sounds like the LED tube you are using is not compatible with the retrofit method you are using. Best thing is to research your LED tubes part number and determine if it is a Type-A or Type-B tube and if Type-B if it is Single End Powered or Dual End Powered.. Does it matter which side you make hot and neutral on the housing so long as it is say "all right are hot and all left are neutral"?

No, the side you choose does not matter but all hot must be all on one side and all neutral must be all on the opposite side.

Hello you would use shunted on double end LED conversions and non shunted on single end conversions. How are the majority of old fluorescent lights wired ? I would think if it is unknown to the customer they would be better starting over and getting the single end conversions.

double end power bulbs can use both non shunted or shunted tumbstones. single end power can only use non shunted. most older fixtures are T-12 fixtures and they have non shunted tumbstones. the T-12 are the bigger bulbs

I can't do all this !!! Guess I'll just go get another fluorescent bulb...

janhomes50 Hello How did make out with the LED conversion. It is confusing seeing all the wires and wandering which LEDs to get single or double ended. But if you start over single end LEDs would be less complicated.

you can remove alot of the unnecessary wires that arnt needed by pulling them out of the tumbstones

Does it matter which way you put the tube? Can you put it in any way, even if it is in a "wrong way?"

With our tubes it shouldn't matter the direction as long as the fixture is wired correctly 🙂

I've been watching a lot of LED conversion demonstrations, and while I understand a single power cable on a table is easier for us to see what's going on, wouldn't there be a secondary cable for the light switch in a standard setup? Don't think i've seen more than one cable coming into the fixture in any I've seen.

There are many ways to wire a light fixture and a switch. I would recommend searching for videos on how a light switch works as those would explain better what is going on there. Hope that helps 🙂

I have 2 ballasts in the fixture. There are 6 wires (blue, red, yellow) coming out of one side and another 6 coming out of the other side. There are 2 black wires and 2 white wires coming out of the main power source. In this case, how should I make the wire connection? Should I turn the power off from the circuit breaker before doing work?

The Ballast you were bypassing must be a variation of a Rapid Start or you guys must sell special LED tubes that work with SHUNTED tombstones - because everything that i've been reading says what you guys did would cause a short and fire hazard if it was an Instant Start ballast. All fluorescent to LED T8 conversion tutorials i've read says that you should ALWAYS use NON-shunted tombstones. Can you elaborate? Thanks!

Yes, that is correct. The LED tubes used in the video are double end powered LED tubes that can use shunted tombstones. These LED tubes are quickly becoming the more popular choice when retrofitting fluorescent tube lights due to how quick and easy the process is. as a test , I removed the ballast from my 4 bulb fixture to test one double ended T8 bulb i bought. i connected the hot black house wire to the blue wires on one side of the fixture(the other side had red wires that were not connected) and the white house wire(neutral) to the yellow wires on the other end. Did i mention i used the same original SHUNTED tombstones. Turned on the light switch and... the bulb shorted. I REALLY think i should use NON-shunted tombstones. can you advise?

In this video they are shunted and we are using Type B dual end powered LED tubes. It's more important to understand how the fixture is wired and that it is done in a manner the LED tubes require 🙂

What happens if you replace the old florescent blubs with LED florescent blubs w/o removing the ballast??

It should be grounded to the fixture.

I just place new leds T8/T12 tubes in today. They replaced the older fluorescent tubes. I flicked the switch and they worked fine. Should I be worried?

Sounds like you replaced with LED T8 Type A tubes that work with the existing ballast. If you're concerned I would check with the place you purchased from about the tubes you purchased and how you installed them. They should be able to help 🙂

@@Totallightingsupply Thank you writing, I believe that you are correct. I bought them at Walmart, and inside was a paper with a ton of ballasts that work well with the new leds. So my guess is that I got lucky, and all should be fine. Just wondering though, if that was not the case, then I would imagine that when I put the new leds in and flicked the switch, the kights should not have turned on?

LOL! We recently updated our product imagery to help reduce confusion. The original idea was to separate double end tubes from single end tubes by showing both ends of the tube. You don't mention if the existing tombstones are shunted or not. Why you prefer double ended LEDs to single-ended.

Most fluorescent fixtures utilize shunted sockets as shown in this video. Double end powered retrofitting is a much faster and less expensive retrofit method than single end. So we prefer the simplify and savings 🙂

@@Totallightingsupply just yesterday a lighting supplier sold me a single-ended LED tube and starter and told me I can simply fit it without any rewiring I had my doubts, confirmed when I got back to do the job and found shunted tombstones. I've now asked him to get me double-ended LED tubes.

OMG frakken gods! All that conversion and the guy couldn't spend 2 moments turning on the goddamn lights at the end!? I mean WTF???

Great and simply video however,......I'm pulling my hair out over converting from fluorescent to LED with a 4 bulb fixture! My fixture has 2 yellow wires on each side, 2 red wires on each side and 2 blue wires on each side. I have 1 black wire and 1 white wire coming out of my ceiling and of course the ground wire. I have watched videos until I'm sick of fooling with this thing. The first time I attempted this, I connected the yellow wires individually and the red wires individually and the blue. I connected the yellow to the white and the blue to the black and nothing happened. Second time around I entered a single splice of yellow wire with the 2 yellow wires from each side and attached it to the white wire. I then entered a single splice of blue wire with the 2 blue wires from each side and attached the blue to the black wire giving me 5 wires to twist together and of course the yellow wires were attached together with the black wire giving me 5 wires to twist together with screw caps. I am at my wits end over this and I'm a neat freak and did a really great job however, no lights! I only know of one thing that may be my problem and that is that to start with, 2 fluorescent bulbs went out and I decided to convert the fixture over to LEDS. Is it possible after all this work, that I may have a bad tombstone in the fixture??? I need help please! :-(

Yes you can do that but once the ballast fails you will need to decide if you are going to replace the ballast or retrofit the fixture as shown in this video. @@Totallightingsupply OK thanks. So to cut to the chase, are you saying ‘yes, we sell them (plug and play)? I’ll definitely take you up on that if it’s easy to return defective lights that have repeatedly happened when they were mailed or curbside picked up). I wanted high lumen daylight T12 replacement LED tube, 48 inches. Electricians here are booked solid for weeks so am looking to replace the old tubes ASAP. Ballast removal later.

@@hatuxka Yes, we do sell LED T8 tube replacement for plug n play in T8 fluorescent fixtures. Unfortunately, our LED T8 tubes are not compatible with existing T12 ballasts for plug n play replacement. For T12 conversions you will have to retrofit the fluorescent fixture like the method shown in this video to use our and many others LED T8 tubes. Hope that helps clear things up 🙂
