In Spring 2016, one of Quebec’s largest independent apiaries was robbed of 184 hives - over five million bees - valued at $200,000.
The brazen crime sent shockwaves through the beekeeping community and devastated the Labonté family, who have been producing honey in La Belle Province since 1937.
Weaving through the perspective of the Labontés, local media and court officials, the episode explores how one of Quebec’s most storied beekeeping families fell victim to the biggest bee theft in Canadian history.
The Labonté family of Victoriaville, Que., has been producing honey for over 70 years. The company was founded by Rolland Labonté. Jean-Marc, his son, took over the business when he was 17. Jean-Marc’s sons Francis and Mathieu now run the Labonté bee company, along with the help of Francis’ son, Frederick - who is the fourth generation of Labonté beekeepers.
FARM CRIME FACTS:
- One out of every three bites of food we eat is pollinated by bees.
- To make one pound of honey, bees must travel over 88,000 kilometres and visit two million flowers.
- In Quebec, “hive inspectors” are appointed by the government to make sure that beekeepers are doing what they can to keep their bees healthy.
- The Labonté hive heist in 2016 was the biggest bee theft in Canadian history, with over five million stolen bees.
- Jean-Marc Labonté signs off his emails with, “Have a honey of a day!”

  • @Rattlerjake1

    @Rattlerjake1

    Although this incident is tragic, that claim about bees not surviving well from being transported is bull; if done correctly they do fine. Millions of hives are transported around Canada and the US many times (thousands of miles) annually for pollination and for winter storage. Packaged bees are also sent in the mail. I also question the amount of money they claim they lost for 184 hives. In the spring the bee colonies would be at their lowest population and beginning to build up and there wouldn't be more than one super on the hive. I'm assuming they were also claiming two years worth of lost income from honey and pollination services.

  • @michaelsmith7425

    @michaelsmith7425

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Rattlerjake1 You are correct, bees are transported just as you described for the purposes of pollination thousands of mile to different crops. However I think you missed the point that these were not transported as they should have been. A thief taking these bees would have been under time pressure and would have moved them as quickly as possible from the scene. The evidence points to this later on when they found a broken box on the side of the road, indicating that they weren't netted or strapped down properly; along with a blown tyre and still travelling indicates desire to put distance between themselves and the scene of the crime. Also running on a flat like that would shake and jostle the bees far more than would normally occur. I think the gentlemen's distress that it would have been unusually harsh on the bees was well founded.

  • @Rattlerjake1

    @Rattlerjake1

    @@michaelsmith7425 - Maybe YOU should pay attention to what was said and what I responded with. @5:20 the narrator said, " Bees are sensitive travelers and unless they are being transported delicately, they often die in transit". This false! They are normally transported on open flat-bed semi trailers and simply strapped in place. Shipping like that is anything but "delicate". But I was mainly responding to Ginger's ignorant statement that "knowing those Bee's probably didn't survive once transported away from their original territory." Now if you want to address you're claims, I would agree that a flat tire on the trailer would cause excessive vibration, but I don't agree with your claim that they weren't secured well, just because the lost 1 hive out of 184! What is obvious is that these thieves knew what they were doing. They knew the hives were easily accessible, they picked the hives they wanted (not just took the first 184), and they only lost one hive (an acceptable loss). They likely had a buyer waiting for the hives or have an area unknown to anyone else where they could put the hives. When you watch the video you'll notice that not all of the 'boxes' are marked, so it is likely the thieves picked unmarked boxes. People who are going to steal that many beehives know how to handle hives and are NOT going to risk losing their load.

    @@Rattlerjake1 Please reread what I posted, I actually agreed with you and simply hypothesized that it a smash and grab operation and not all the normal precautions would have been taken. What I said in line one of my paragraph agreed with you the second line was the hypothesis about the semi cavalier way in which the bees were transported. I did not disagree with you, nor did I agree with the premise of bees being sensitive travelers.

  • @Rattlerjake1

    @Rattlerjake1

    @@michaelsmith7425 - My reply was in reference to your "However I think you missed the point". You're assuming that they were mishandled; what you aren't getting is that someone who is sealing this many hives is doing it for one of two reasons - 1) to sell them for big bucks, in which case they definitely would need the hives to be in acceptable condition for the buyer or there'd be no deal, or 2) to use for pollination services, in which they would also need the hives to be in good condition. I would agree with you if they morons were amateurs who were trying to steal a couple of hives, but these asshats knew what they were doing to get in there quickly, pick and choose the hives they wanted (as the owner stated), and get out of there leaving little to no evidence until a count was made - AND only loosing one hive. The flat tire was simply "karma", something they failed to plan for.

    Ana. One man did not do this alone. It took at least 7-8 people to load up and take them away in one night. Justice has not yet been served. The sad thing is - the Labonte family will lose more than what was stolen if they didn't do what they have done: put their focus back on the bees they have under their care. Someone needs to rat out the thieves. Those hives are probably still in the same boxes, probably painted. But a brand is there forever. They can still be caught.

Time to put some surveillance devices in the bee yard. With hundreds of thousands of dollars in value that is a lot of temptation for criminals. And I don't mean disrespect to the drones - when it's their turn to mate with the queen, they give everything they have. Literally. To the Labontes: I am sorry for your loss. It is wrong and unfair on so many levels. The best revenge will be to take your bees and love them - and take your business and make it soar! I am very sorry for your loss. I would love to get into bee keeping. For so many reasons, not just to help the bee populations. Unfortunately I have found lately that those who have the knowledge, aren't willing to share it without making a profit from their knowledge. And as long as bee keepers have that attitude, the bee keeper population will keep declining. There needs to be free courses offered to those who would be interested in keeping bees. Bees are a necessity in our eco system, without them....we die too. And to leave it up to people to learn for themselves, and lose millions of bees in the process, is just not acceptable.

    Very odd that this wasn't solved. Managing 180+ hives is a lot of work, produces a lot of honey, and all were marked/branded, so that needed to be filled in with something and painted over. There would've been location data for their phones, and since they clearly weren't beginner beekeepers, someone selling supplies there would know who they are. I suspect they have relatives within the police.

    I find this "story" very suspect. Most farmers have guard dogs that are VERY adept at warning you about predators or any uninvited thieves that might show up. They might get away with a couple of hives but not this. Further, there are inexpensive tracking devices and other means available to secure your equipment. None of which were utilized on the LARGEST bee farm in Canada. NONSENSE! INSIDE JOB!!!!

    Story is good. Sorry for their losses. But stop saying 5 millions bees! This really annoys me. Nobody count bees individually! And 200k for 184 hives? Are you kidding me? More than $1000/Hive? That's a hell of expensive hive.

    That estimate might be low. First the cost of the boxes. The frames. The covers. A starter of bees is 175$ US. Plus honey is running $8 a pound. Could be 30 pounds in a hive or more. Then the wax is valuable. Bees wax is in a lot of products.
