Hey folks! I'm thrilled to present my latest frame rate killer. There have been a lot of good questions raised about the design, so I'll present an FAQ here: Q: Why doesn't it fall when you stack the segments beyond the vessel rendering/vessel physics ranges? A: KSP doesn't load physics for a landed craft until you are within 200 m of it. Each segment is more than 200 m tall, so one segment can be landed on top of another without entering the physics loading range of the segment beneath it. Once a segment is landed and stops wobbling, I can switch to the tracking station and leave the new segment in a landed state, ready for the next stack. Since each segment remains in a landed state after I switch away, they can be stacked beyond the 2.5 km vessel rendering distance without collapsing, so long as I keep any active vessel more than 200 m from the tower. If you want a more in-depth analysis of this technique, check out Stratzenblitz75's Dres Bridge video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dpN5xZWEZ8_ej5c.html Q: Could you use this technique to build a stock space elevator? A: Unfortunately, you cannot. The game changes reference frames at 100 km above sea level for all planets, which does weird things to vessels in a landed state at that altitude. Q: Why didn't you dock the segments together? A: The 200 m physics range trick only works if the passive vessel remains in a landed state while the next segment is landed. Docking them would combine them into a single vessel, thus activating physics for the passive segment and putting it "in flight". Q: What was your FPS? A: Not bad in the early shots (40-50 FPS). Slideshow in the helicopter landing shot (1-1.5 FPS). Q: Why didn't you decouple the props after landing to cut down the final part count? A: I should have done this in hindsight. I was planning to include that functionality when I was still in the design phase, but I ran into stability/kraken issues with the detachable props. So, opted to keep the design as simple as possible while accepting that my FPS was probably going to suffer one way or another. Q: Part count? A: Tower Base: 1 launch, 173 parts Tower Segment: 22 launches, 406 parts per launch Fuel Ship: 48 launches, 267 parts per launch Cloud City: 1 launch, 655 parts Total parts launched: 22,576 Q: Did you actually do all 72 launches? A: Yes. Performing all 72 flights/landings took over a month of real time (working on and off). I transferred many of the segments from Kerbin to Laythe in groups to keep the in-game construction time to years instead of decades.

Amazing, absolutely amazing...... That shot of the rockets jettisoning themselves away from the platform was one of the best KSP cuts I've seen, would love to have that shot as a screensaver. The engineering to make this happen was sheer determination in the end. I tip my hat to you sir, you have earned my subscription.

landed ships will only have physics applied if the root part is within 200 meters of the one you’re controlling. Since the segments are taller than that, you can land on them without having to worry about crushing/toppling them.

I want to contribute an idea, you could make a vehicle with wheels that grab onto the sections of the tower and be able to climb it, to cut all the propellers along the tower, that way you would save the burden of hundreds of pieces and you would have a better performance and FPS. again, great video.

Thanks! Each tower segment is ~220 m tall, so each subsequent section doesn’t enter the 200 m physics loading range of the segment prior. Thus, all segments remain in a landed state after switching away. In theory you could continue stacking them all the way to space and beyond, at least until you hit the planet’s SOI limit. Might be a feasible technique for creating a stock space elevator.

I also love your helicopter blade RCS, very inspired and perfect for Laythe. And a very well-built city to top it off... literally. Perhaps a tip for what remains of your sanity, for future builds like this: if you had ditched all of the blades and their supports after each tower segment was positioned, you could've saved a bunch on part count, and therefore lag. Looking forward to your next project!

Would be cool if KSP allows you to "bake-in" a stationary vehicle to turn it into a station for as long as sufficient resources are locally produced & large amount is stored. This way it makes a copy of the entire vessel & converts it into an unchangeable but removeable model that don't use any physics/part simulation and loads & unloads like a structure and NOT like an inactive vessel that clings it's existence unto a fragile thread which may or may not glitch out & explode the moment it becomes a fully simulated vessel. - Creating new stations on planets would require resources locally produced & stored while on Kerbin, the resources aren't required, but rather large funds are required & used.

I love all the vanilla attachment and control methods, using all the cargo doors for precision positioning is excellent. How did the tanks not explode when using them as direct landing contacts? I also adore that little craft at the end!
