Been doing motorcycle track days at Palmer since it opened. I see a few things going on there.... Friends don't let friends early apex. Try turning in later at T1. The car will be happier. You'll be happier. You'll be faster, too. Take a look at the line in 9, too. The car in front of you turned in later and got down to the apex better. He was already pointed down the track when he got on the gas... you were headed to the grass, and that's where you wound up.

Is it q bad idea to drive the car to the track, on the track, and home again? I guess most people use a trailer? I want to try track driving but not ready to buy a trailer and a vehicle to hitch the trailer to.

Uhm, I can name one more mistake.... PMP is located in Palmer Mass which is about 14 mi from the line to Connecticut. I used to live in Dudley Mass, (closer to Thompson Motor Speedway) and I would've given you a pass, but, you gota go through a few towns to get to Connecticut! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ lol!........ Edit! I listened closer, like 3 more times, and I think you said that it was a Connecticut based SCCA club? (it just sounded like you said PMP was in Connecticut.)

Having spent the better part of the last year trying to figure out the landscape of amateur motorsports in the USA myself, I think it's worth mentioning to Ihan, what I think Phil was doing is not a "race," but what many call an "HPDE" or High Performance Driving Event. These are events where anyone with a standard driving license can take their street-legal car with minimal (some convertibles require an aftermarket roll-bar) or no modifications and get practice time on the track. Organized by local clubs, beginners typically get some amount of coaching/ classroom sessions followed by 20-ish minute lap sessions where they get to practice the lessons they have learned. Most HPDEs typically offer 3 sessions per day. There is no passing except in safe zones and only by "point by" from the slower driver. Now to actually go door to door RACING in the SCCA or NASA, the two major sanctioning bodies, requires access to a fully caged/modified for safety race car and driving school to get your Novice Permit (a kind of license) to go racing in regional events (so called "majors" are reserved for full competition licensed racers). In the SCCA, after one driving school and 3 weekends of racing--provided you perform safely and to the standards of the lead official--you are eligible for your full competition license. FWIW, in the case of SCCA racing, HPDEs do NOT count towards your full racing license requirements. I THINK in NASA HPDE experience is considered? Many also compete in "autocross" and "time attack" or "time trial" events which sort of split the difference between full-on "door-to-door" racing and HPDEs. These events are not "mass start" events, BUT ARE timed, and do not necessarily require a fully caged racing car with a log book. But since they are timed there are winners and losers as drivers attempt to complete courses in the fastest time possible. Sorry for the long comment, but it's a confusing scene and I thought I'd share what I've learned about different ways to legally drive cars really really fast!
