Good tips! One thing I do is arrange my tops in the closet by color and sleeve length. I find if I mix short sleeve and sleeveless things in with long sleeve things they tend to get lost or overlooked. By hanging like sleeve lengths together they’re easier to find.

🤔 My categories are tripping me up. For the majority of my life, I separated my wardrobe into Public & Private sphere like some Victorian Miss. My classic corporate co-ords & suits were segregated bcos of their extreme elegance & formality. They possess a slightly more modern, masculine, & powerful bent. My favored palette is more neutral. Special occasion & "date" dressing (day & night activities with my beau or gal-pals) also roll-up here. My private realm includes home, hearth, & church activities. This is where I feel 💯% more free to indulge my ultra feminine, casual, & sporty side. Risk slightly more pops of color in this arena. Indulge myself in few florals & flounces as the mood strikes. Since I'm no longer working in an office 9-to-5, I'm slowly starting to mix in a touch of rebellion & comfort to make my formal gear feel more conducive with my more casual lifestyle. My classic clothes need a sense of low key glamour, rock-n-roll, or sport to work right for me outside those narrow confines. Otherwise, they strike me as feeling rather fussy, stifling, & staid. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

I have been watching other fashion content creators to get inspiration and a little more guidance on how to get the most use out of my closet. I have to say of all of them, I resonate most with your style. I love how you explain the elements that make or don’t make an outfit work, and I appreciate how you don’t highlight the pieces you wear, but more how they make you feel and what they do for you. Thank you, Alyssa. I find your channel so refreshing and helpful.

🙋‍♀ Guilty of "saving for special occasions" and "categorizing"! 🤦‍♀️Thank you, this video was REALLY very helpful and made me reflect on how I should organize my wardrobe. PS - There is one category, however, that I simply cannot mix with the rest, and that is gym clothes. As most Europeans (Portuguese here), you will not find me wearing leggings or sweat pants on the street unless I am on my way to the gym, so I would not combine those pieces with any other clothes. xxx

I buy same things in multiple colors because I have a devil of a time finding long-sleeve blouses that actually fit my arms. Yes, I have big upper arms. When I find THE one, you bet I will buy more than one. And, on the miraculous day that I actually find a nice blazer or denim jacket that will actually fit my arms, I might do the same.

I have way too many clothes and am guilty of buying the same item over and over and tags still on several items. It’s chaos and hard to concentrate and be creative. For now, I have a separate section in my closet that I work out of and it helps. New plan: look at 5 items each day and assess if they are working for me. If not, it goes into the giveaway box.

Thank you, as always, for sharing your tips. I have multiple dresses, for example, in the same cut but different colors. However, I find it extremely helpful. Currently, I live in a tropical environment, and having multiples in different colors makes it easier for me to get dressed in the morning. I allow the color to be the variant or create the desired style vibe. For example, if I want to be "serious" and accomplish tasks, I will wear the black dress. In addition, I wear the copper dress in the fall or if I have a Zoom meeting and want to stand out. I could also do that with different silhouettes or slight tweaks to the neckline, as you mentioned. However, I also like buying what works for me. Thank you, again, for giving your audience such great and helpful tips.

I adore that look -- luxe or dressy blouse with jeans and for me, a blazer. I'm in a job where I determine our office's dress code and we've gone to "dress for your day, no ripped or super casual clothes, but jeans without holes are ok." So I often wear dark wash jeans, straight legs or boot-cut, with a lovely blouse and a blazer. Love it!

I have 30 days to return items. And I do return 9 out of 10. The trick is to see the new purchase daily. The conscious level increases the level of scrutiny. I definitely returned absolutely perfect items with fantastic sales price simply because they didn’t fit my wardrobe, lifestyle, or too fantasy-ish.

  • @suann9790

Maybe it would help you in the future to research what happens to a large portion of returned clothing items to buy more selective in the first place. Unfortunately, a lot of it ends up in landfills.

@@suann9790 i buy from tjmaxx and marshalls on line exclusively so that I can return to stores. Physical stores don’t discard returned items. @@33Jenesis Oh that's good, not having the waste dilemma of returns on top of the personal decision! I try to be really mindful about my purchases and I want to keep only what I really love, but learning about the horrendous practices of fashion companies also stops me from ordering a selection of items that is meant to be returned at least partly. For now, my personal solution is to avoid online shopping if possible. Trying clothes on in a physical store and going to thrift stores works quite well for me at the moment.

  • @33Jenesis

    @33Jenesis

    Жыл бұрын

@@suann9790 there are many on line retailers. I made a conscious decision NOT to buy from them except the 2 I mentioned for limited merchandise selection and stores close by. The store clerks asked me why I only came in to turn; this was what I told them. Their stores offer too many choices that exhaust me. I also can’t shrift shop because I always, always find exceptional items that I couldn’t let go. I have to make a choice where I spend my retail money so I made restrictions. Now I tend to buy expensive items but a lot fewer items than before. I’d rather have real diamond on 14k gold than gold plated silver. I buy one coat, not 5 different coats.

@@33Jenesis I totally agree on the quality over quantity approach and only buying what is really beneficial to you. Wow, what you said about stuffing clothes into rigid categories really resonates with me. I have four cats and I'm a bit worn out from constantly de-furring nice things - so I do have a small "house clothes" set - e.g., the jeans/shirts that don't seem to hang onto fur as badly or roll out quickly and easily. I'm not sure I have it in me to open up my "nice" pieces to my home clothes collection. That said, I've no excuse for not re-imagining those pieces for my social life. I feel like I"m meeting you halfway there on this one Alyssa!

I love the suggestion about how to put things with tags still on them on a separate rack for about a week to help you decide. One problem that I have also is that I have to wear things sometimes before I realize that they just don't work for me. I may like the look but wearing helps me to know the comfort level is just not there or after washing or cleaning things I am not as pleased with how they hold up. I often feel I waste money because of this. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Tjis is soo good advice! Classic not trendy cloths that don’t fit, just put them away and once every season you can go thrue your storage of that season’s cloths. That can really be shop your own, but instead of closet, your storage! I have used this metod on lots of my cloths over the last 30 years or so. Only regnet is the things I let go of that were really expensive to buy again or could’t find similar when I wanted it back!

I now have 4 different white tops…🤭 it’s taken some time for my to get all of these principles applied to my wardrobe. I think I was sticking to what felt safe. 😊

I rarely buy clothes in store, so if I receive an online purchase I try it on straightaway. I always know immediately if it’s right for me and my wardrobe. If it’s not, I pack it up and take it back to the courier that day! Doing this prevents that item from languishing in my wardrobe, unworn and, possibly later, un- returnable.

This was so timely. With change in seasons I have been evaluating some items that I haven’t worn in a long time, or that I love but don’t fit.

Loved this video. I like your recommendation of just giving a week with items one is not sure of. I do try these items on several times before I make my decision. When I do finally decide on keeping an item I say "Welcome to my wardrobe!"

Guilty of having for a long time separated my clothes in 2 categories: "for work" and "off work". But when I retired I did not want to get rid of all of them (especially the pants) so I put them with my other clothes! I am still guilty of keeping one pair of dressy pants for special occasion as I cannot stop thinking: "if it is stained or dirty, what will I wear?". The reality is: I don't have many occasions that need to be dressy. Actually none at all for the last few years! The dress codes have changed and allow more of the casual chic look for most occasions. I went to the opera Garnier in Paris for the first time this year (very fancy place!) and still you could see jeans to evening attire being worn!!!

I give myself time to think about returning items, but I write the last possible date for return in my calendar. BUT i just realised that it might be a bad sign if I even consider returning an item than just wear it right away. Thank you, Alyssa!

I’m in the middle of a closet decluttering session because of crowded look and/or feel, and these are the questions I keep asking myself this time instead of the usual do I love it, or have I worn it lately or all those normal decluttering guidelines. This is great, especially the one that I just discovered: how to get the most use of your pieces in every occasion.

Just put away fall-winter and got out spring-summer. Having not seen those closed for a good six months made me excited to wear them again, and I feel like I had just been on a big shopping spree. But I hadn’t! I just shopped my closet! Definitely guilty of buying too much of the same vibe in different colors. This video helped me understand why I do t reach for those things as much!
