I actually still don't like using the metronome even though I'm no longer a beginner but then again I don't play with a band or metal, I mostly play alternative and some hard rock, anyways another thing u could mention is try to play more the music u like and eventually adjust ur gear to match that style. Maybe that's not a beginner thing, but anyways should I keep trying with a metronome?

Spot the fuck on! I bought a decent Gibson thinking "surely, it'll sound better than my ESP, it's the real thing". Sold it with 6 months. Restringing yourself (and touching up intonation) is such a critical skill, strings cost enough as it! And Line 6... I don't trash talk stuff generally, but as someone who spends at much time on getting the right sound as I do playing... Line 6 amps are horrible to play, and forget metal tones entirely. No matter how hard you try, the tone you made just feels shit to play. My bandmate is a much, MUCH better player than me, and the first time he played through a decent setup (instead of his top of the range Line 6 head) he couldn't believe how much more he enjoyed playing, and wasn't "fighting" the amp to get the right sound with palm muting. He was having to massively overcompensate with technique, something that would be really miserable for a new player.

Dude.... that’s a great list, but if that’s what happened to you, I’m so sorry!! My first guitar was a 100.00 Sears acoustic. First electric a Hondo LP knock off. I’ve had strats, EVH, Schecter, Deans S7G ESP, LTD, Ibanez, Yamaha. My go to is my Schecter Devil Custom. Used to play live, so i had a lot of amps, from Line6- ugh. B-52, Jet City, Carvin and Mesa. The Carvin was the best, because i used it with pedals, and switched the power tubes to KT77’s. Now i strictly record, so i use Neural DSP plug ins, which melt faces Best thing a beginner can do, I’m my mind, is to play with others, and make friends. You find good deals on gear, learn new tricks, learn how to play in tune and in time. But just play. Play. Play.and love it! Because that’s what it’s all about!!

Metronome is the outmost important tip. A lot of people don't realize this, but what makes great guitar player so impressive (Paul Gilbert, Jeff Loomis, etc) is not only the fact that they play difficult, yet melodic fast licks. But! They can play at any tempo and it's always perfectly on tempo And clean. I think it's the most important advice from this list.

My worst 5 mistakes in learning and playing the guitar not synchronically were and are: - Believing that most of guitar playing is up to one's talent. - Not practicing regularly, only in rare, long sessions. - Being demotivated by misconceived perfectionism. - Mainly practicing techniques, not playing songs. - Not joining a band in time. +1: Maybe the most important, that I didn't realize the importance of soft muscle tone.

Great advice 👍 I'd say one thing I got stuck on for a while was not challenging myself enough. I'd learn a few things but then just play those same things over and over so never really developed much for a while. Leading on from this is not having a focused practise session. Something I've learnt over time is it's better to do shorter bursts of new things, take a break, and return to it. I find I'm a lot better learning a song for my covers one day for an hour or so then leaving them, and again practising the next day for an hour or so. After doing this over a few days it sinks in so much more than if I had just blasted the same song for 8 hours in one day. One really important skill I'd recommend to everyone learning to play is learn how to analyse your own playing. It takes a while to be able to be critical of your own playing but being able to identify your own weakness will allow you to focus more on them and subsequently be able to continue to grow. After 10 years or so I'm still guilty of this, my vibrato still isn't fully up to scratch. It's not terrible but it's no Zakk Wylde. Essay over... haha - Also Guthrie is awesome 🤘🤘

These tips are superb! Wish I had incorporated them more when I started... One thing I would add is palm muting.. Learn to palm mute and practice it a lot when starting! It especially helps when you're playing heavy (distorted) guitar!! It can stop barre chords from bleeding sound like crazy and adds major dynamics to specific riffs which can make you're playing sound way tighter and more musical. Awesome video man

You made a lot of very important points for beginners, but you missed a couple of of the most obvious, the first being, "Practice, practice, practice!" I always told my students, "If you think you're practicing enough, you probably aren't." I've heard it said that it takes 10,000 hours to truly master a skill, and I am a great believer in that; when I first started playing guitar, I would often play as much as 15 or 16 hours a day. Secondly, the most important thing a novice guitarist can learn is, "Speed is a byproduct of accuracy." The right way to learn to play fast is to start off playing everything VERY slowly, learning how to "nuance" each note properly. That could mean anything from a soft, slow single-string vibrato to a fast, multi-string "shimmy," depending on the song. Keep up the great work!

Thank you very much! =) Though the title is "5 Mistakes I've made and you shouldn't make". I never made the mistake to not practice enough, so I didn't mention it! =D this is more stuff for a general tip video! And the second one I've mentioned in the passage of talking about left and right hand synchronisation. There I tell to slow everything down to keep it clean and then increase the speed! =)

Your #5 tip is my second tip, after my #1, which is FIND A GUITAR THAT LOOKS GOOD TO YOU AND FEELS GOOD TO PLAY. Because if the guitar doesn't feel good in your hands, you won't want to play it at all. If the guitar makes you feel like playing, you're off to a good start. Then, get your fingers working independently on the fretboard and with your picking hand a LA your tip 5 (my tip 2). My tip 3? Learn the power chord (root-5th) form, and learn to play a complete song or two using it (a la "Rock you like a hurricane or "Talk Dirty to Me") to build some confidence.

Thanks so much Jassy. You are a big inspiration. I've been playing since 1992 and got pretty good by the late 90s but since 2005 I've really dropped off and now I haven't played much at all for 5 years. It feels like I'm a beginner again. I really appreciate the tips. - I'd add, if you don't know how to pro-set up your guitar, to get it set up at a guitar shop, especially if you down tune, because you can't properly tune a poorly intonated guitar even with the best mechanical tuner in the world. Cheers!

Learn economy picking. I played 20 years without improving until I discovered it. Economy picking is a mixture of alternate picking and sweep picking. You always go from a lower string to a higher string eg E string->A string with a downstroke, and always upstrokes when moving from a higher to a lower string eg G string->D string. Practice 3 notes per string. From E->A->D->G->B->E strings pick down up down (move string) down. . Then the opposite way E->B->G->D->A->E pick up down up (move string) up. Next exercise is double economy. Move back and forth between two strings down, down, up, up. like Paranoid by Black Sabbath. The main benefit is eliminating the need to use outside picking or legato for difficult phrases. It also corrects a weak upstroke, builds muscle memory so your wrist knows where the strings are and helps picking overall. Most big name guitarists use economy but they just don't tell you they are using it, or forget they are using eg Malmsteen. It takes quite a while for the wrist to break free from old habits and stop flapping mindlessly up and down, maybe 6 weeks to get the basics and then regular practice to clean up and build speed. Once you get it down though you can play some really progressive shit.

Biggest mistake I’ve made (and still have to watch out for) is tensing my muscles when I play and not holding the guitar in a way that allows me to keep my wrist straight. I’d get so excited playing songs that I would strum/pick/fret way too hard and not pay attention to good form. Then I would injure myself and have to take a week off, which is no fun! Remember to relax when you play! Use barely enough tension to get the notes sounding right!

Sweet video, thanks. Being a bass player I learned how important playing in time is. So as you said always practice with a metronome or a drum machine and start new riffs and lines slow at first, then gradually speed it up. If you begin to sound sloppy then slow it down a little and try again.

Like you I always felt my playing was missing that "something" I seen an interview on My Favorite Riff where Nikki Sixx interviewed Stevie D from Buckcherry and Stevie said the one thing that would turn his head in a music store was someone that would play a couple of notes with a killer vibrato since then my playing has gotten so much better. Keep up the good work!

After four or five years of guitar playing, i've realized that lots of the songs i used to play was tabbed wrong. Also i couldn't really tell the difference in the very beginning, maybe not cause my untrained ear but to take every tab as a God instead of take it as a guideI'm not saying that every tab is wrong but i think that there is missing a step that the tab writer does; to listen. I mean, if you really like music this mustn't be hard work or even a work. Please enjoy and feel it instead of instrumentalize yourself and music with "LEARN TO PLAY GUITAR IN 5 MINUTES!" videos or "songs you must play when they asks you to play guitar"Love & joy is what we need :3And no tabs! Listen! Love 4 u JJ

Like the stability of my right hand stays for just 10 seconds and then I lose it and have to move my whole forearm to continue playing the song, and then after I 5 seconds of that my whole arm hurts and I just can't play anymore.

I never practiced out of tune, but have to plead guilty on the other mistakes. Especially not having a metronome, and making everything all about speed. I just picked up the guitar again after years away from it. I'm practicing with an online metronome, so far just going up and down the major scale from F# on the 2nd fret, to F# on the 14th. It feels comfortable with the metronome set to 90. Then I tried playing along with a jamtrack of Ozzy's Crazy Train, and crashed and burned! :) I guess it's going to take some practice to play that again. But, it's practice I'm looking forward to. Leslie West was very keen on a good vibrato. I remember him mentioning some guitarists using a really fast vibrato that sounded "like a bad opera singer." I love Yngwie's, how wide it is. You're an inspiration twice, first on guitar, and also on language! I've been trying to learn German forever, and now I'm determined to speak it as good as you speak English. Thanks much!

Hello Jassy :) Very good advices. I try to use the metronome every now and then. So I guess that is one of my mistakes. I would like to ask you something. Does dead/old strings make playing full bar chords harder to the hand? I'm changing my strings soon anyway. Have a nice week.

JJ's One Girl Band as a drummer I can attest that all these tips can be applied to not only guitars, but all instruments. I have played music since I was about 10 years old. I listen to these tips and I can relate to the metronome tip. A lot of drummers have the serious problem of inconsistent timing. I have played guitar, clarinet, keyboard, vocals, and of course my first true love the drums. I have always had good timing. I listen to you playing solos and I am thinking of how I as a drummer could turn your scales into a drum solo. As a former guitar player I can also truthfully say that a lot of drummers don't think of music from a guitar players point of view. Drummer vocabulary is a complex art form just as much as guitar theory is. When I play drums the hardest part is being humble enough to admit that I always have room for improvement. I hope that drummers and guitar players can communicate more concisely and articulately. I know that what you said about left and right hand synchronization is just as important to drummers as well. Because all rhythm can get into polyrhythmic territory. If a drummer can not sync his hands together on what is called a flam the drum pattern will sound out of place. I know that guitar playing is no different. Music on all instrument is all about breaking down patterns and melody. Drumming can be VERY annoying at times because of the ambidexterity aspects. 2 way coordination is hard enough. What so many people don't appreciate is the four way coordination that it takes to be an awesome drummer. I love to think about these tips because when I hear drumming on some of my favorite progressive music albums I listen closely. I don't if people realize that the drums and guitar are soloing at the same time. When I hear my favorite drummers like Gene the "Atomic Clock" Hoglan play drums for bands like Death he would solo at the same time as the guitar solo. I never really realized this until recently when I started to listen to the drums more attentively. I love your video and it fascinated me. Keep up the good work.

One thing I've been doing is trying to find songs that really challenge me, forcing me to get better. I've only been playing about 9 months but I've picked up alot learning to play songs like the four horsemen, nothing else matters, (attempting) to play holy wars etc. You can pick up alot of tips just trying to play difficult songs. And experiment with picking. I love using hybrid picking. Learned it playing fade to black. Finger picking was a bit of a pain to learn and I'm still trying to get better at it

@@JassyPabst well admittedly I tend to stick to alot of classic thrash metal but I also love learning led zeppelin or rush. Rush has some interesting chords in their songs that u dont see alot of in hard rock. Rick beato did a great breakdown of this in one of his what makes this song great videos (I think it was limelight but I'm not 100 percent on that). Also sting from the police is another one who uses some very interesting chord progressions in his songs.

My 2nd biggest mistake? Only practicing scales, some arpeggios & improvising over backing tracks without learning any riffs/licks/solos. Now I can improvise using all 7 modes of major scale & mode 1 of harmonic minor but only a few riffs/licks/solos.

You can download a really good guitar tuning app on your phone free. That's what I did, and since we seem to keep our phones with us all of the time it's really convenient, and does a good quick tuning job. Great advice, and video, thanks!! 😎👍🎸🎶🎵🎼

Very nice recording setup, Jassy. Thanks for doing these. They take time and effort, and they are definitely appreciated. 👍👍👍 The biggest mistake I made, when first learning to play, was letting my parents convince me I needed a guitar teacher, and then letting them find me one. The instructor was trying to teach me things like how to play "Mary had a little Lamb" from a Mel Bay Guitar Book. Gott im Himmel!!!! Learn what turns you on, whether it's on your own or through an instructor. Otherwise you'll get turned off quickly and probably give it up. I wanted to learn Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Michael Schenker, not Mel Bay. Fortunately, I kicked Mel Bay to the curb, and started playing what I wanted (e.g. Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, UFO, etc.) I swear, if I ever hear someone play that song again (i.e. Mary had a little Lamb), I'm going to lock myself in a crypt for eternity.

I was in a really bad car accident and I nearly lost my right arm. I have terrible nerve and tendon damage in my right arm and hand so strumming is very challenging. But I still play guitar even though sometimes it can hurt me. One thing I know is I will never be a lead guitarist but I love rhythm so much.

When I started playing the guitar, I didn't know how to play anything. I had a guitar that was in standard tuning and I didn't know finger placement, chords or anything so after a week of having having this guitar (my parents bought me) used. Me and my mom went to the music store and bought some new strings for the guitar. I got home and started removing the old strings [like I had a clue how to restring a guitar] and as I was re-stringing and tightening the strings up without a clue of what I was really doing... I discovered drop tuning completely by accident while I was doing this and since that day I have been using drop tuning. I was born deaf in one ear so I literally learn everything by ear. My only mistake was not picking the guitar up sooner. Also if you are a beginner, I would avoid Floyd Rose guitars and just stick to a First Act until you decide you ACTUALLY want to play the guitar and once you make that decision then I would say to go ahead and invest a little more in a guitar. Just my 2 cents.
