Since creating IMPLANTgames, shoot-em-ups have slowly become one of my favorite video game genres. The simple act of flying around the screen, dodging bullets, and shooting everything that moves, is inherently fun. While I feel the 16-bit consoles is where the genre really hit its stride, there were some solid entries available on the previous generation of hardware. So on today's episode of 5 Game, I present 5 good, NES Shmups.

My favourite NES shooter is Gun Nac, another crazy good Compile game! Crisis Force is another interesting one but it was only released in Japan.

Gun.smoke gets mentioned a lot, but with great reason. It's always frantic and fun, the 2 button shooting feels great, and the RPG style upgrade path is nice. I also want to mention The Guardian Legend because it's just so great even if only half of it counts.

Another great video! I confess I really didn't play many shmups on console until I got the Sega Genesis, man there were so many great ones on that system!

+Bryan Bowen Thanks man! Yeah, the Genesis has a pretty strong line-up, and I'm surprised so many made it outside of Japan.

Great video! Hard not to agree with you on the matter of shmups really hitting their stride on console with the 16-bit era, but the flavour of NES shmups is something kinda special. Thumbs up to all of your selections in this 5 Games, especially cool to see Stinger get a bit of love. Some other worthy shooters on NES that I'd put forward for future consideration include Starship Hector, Burai Fighter, Terra Cresta, Isolated Warrior and, my personal favourite for huge nostalgia reasons, the Famicom exclusive B-Wings.

+Drixxel Stinger seems like it should get more love, especially since the other TwinBee games get a ton of it. Oh well I guess :D Thanks for the other recommendations, always looking to expand the NES Shmup collection!

I really like 1943. It's TOUGH as hell, and I love how you can select which attributes to upgrade as you go along. And someone has probably mentioned this already, but Zanac has a stage select. If I remember correctly, you just reset the NES 13 times. It's been a while since I've done it.

I've both the NES and the PC-Engine versions of Twin Cobra. Funny thing is, although I really appreciate much more the PC-Engine version, I've only managed to finish the NES version yet. It really seems easier. Oh, and Zanac's graphics were so advanced they shared some elements later found in some PC-Engine shmups, regarding pixel art and style. As for its gameplay, it really has mechanics also found on Power Strike (Master System), M.U.S.H.A. (Mega Drive), Blazing Lazers/Gunhed (PC-Engine), Spriggan (PC-Engine). Compile's way of making shmup was definetely unique back then :)

S.C.A.T. or Action in New york is good, Abadox is insanely difficult, but a lot of fun. Both are by Natsume. Guardian Legend is pretty fun, and of course, the star force games are a lot of fun.

Nice video series. Wish you would return to it in 2019. One of my least favorite shoot em ups on NES (my favorite system) is Life Force. I don't like the forced memorization at the very end. It sours most of the game for me.

I don't know every Shooter on Nes. But if you agree with me Implantgames, I think Sky Shark should be number one. Sure Sky Shark doesn't give you an ending but I enjoy it. Here are my Nes Shooters. 1. Sky Shark, 2. Fire Hawk, and 3. Star Force. I will check out more Nes Shooters later.

+NostalgicRoe I do own Sky Shark but haven't put enough time into it to really comment on it's quality. If you're warming up to the genre you really can't go wrong with Image Fight. Most of the bosses have exploitable weaknesses (watch a longplay) and there are infinite continues.

No Summer Carnival 92 Recca? The game that pushes the hardware of the NES like no other? I know its rare and expensive. If only Roms were trivially easy to find then it being rare and expensive wouldn't matter at all.

+TheNintendoFanatic It's the second worst video option, next to basic RF, because it smudges everything into analogue goo. But it's what most people use, short of emulation, because HDMI modding, despite the incredible quality, is not always in a person's budget.
