Alien Isolation only becomes popular years after its release, via word of mouth and the beginning of Let's Play video format on KZread. People watch these people played it and they wanted to play it too and so on and so on. Mike's rage at the IGN score is well-deserved.

It did do very well. The horror genre in general was in the toilet before AI which AI kick started the heart again. 2.5 mil sales was amazing. EVERYONE never has a bad word to say about the game everyone loves it IGN spoilt any chance of a sequel because they had SEGA's ear. Creative Assembly were ready and willing to make AI2. SEGA kiaboshed it with BS "weak sales" excuse.

@Rocket1377

@Mike Wilson-Barrett: No it wasn't. It was well received, but it did not sell as well as Sega wanted. It was very expensive to produce (due to the advanced A.I. and the cost of the licence, plus a long development time of over 3 years). That meant the profits were lower than expected. The developers also had to hire outside contractors from other studios, since they had no experience of making survival horror games. They ended up with over 100 people on the team, which added to the development costs.

The perfect middle ground between the "click bait" style quick hits and the dnd vids which are also great for getting the most of you fine folks into the content but unfortunately unwieldy :)

My thought on the matter is "would the sequel really be good?" Like either its the same game a second time, or its a different game entirely which probably won't really capture the essence of the original. Feels like a no win situation for the creators. Some games exist perfectly as stand alone.

“Gorgeous” strikes me as a bit of a weird choice of words for a horror game based on one of the more deliberately grotesque classic horror monsters, but Alien: Isolation is good enough that it somehow makes that description make some semblance of sense.
@Maniacman2030
Жыл бұрын
Meh, "deserves" is a strong word. It was the type of game for a set audience, with an outside audience who didn't really care to play it due to the content, but didn't mind watching someone else subject themselves to it. For the type of game it was, it was already destined to be a one-shot. If you could kill the xenomorph* somehow though, it might've gained more of a following. Make it a double-edged sword that the corpse then becomes an obstacle due to their highly corrosive acidic blood. *The company could've intentionally bred more than one for experimentation purposes.
I wasn't aware until just now about the IGN score for Alien: Isolation. I had heard nothing but praise for it. I was super excited when I finally got to play it, and wasn't disappointed. Still one of the best games I've played.
@SamJ.J.

I wonder though whether a sequel is necessary? I've not watched Alien nor played Alien Isolation, but it sounds like its basically already perfect as is? Like Idk where they would go with a sequel that wouldn't feel like just more of the same? I know some series pull of an unexpected better than the original sequel, but ten times as many series have a meh sequel or worse.
@KaladinVegapunk
Жыл бұрын
I mean, RLMs rich Evans on pre rec completely ripped on it deservedly, it's not very good hahaha. other than the retro aesthetic being deserving of praise..it's got really janky xenomorph ai, it's only got 2 patterns and no internal logic, literally the ENTIRE game is just opening doors, or finding keys to open doors, or a tool to get a key to open a door..that's literally it. No fun gameplay, well built stealth, or anything to mix that up like dead space or metroidvanias do to make that progression gating feel natural or fluid, no good writing or characters, and other than playing spooky warioware occasionally, there isn't much to it at all. Without the alien name noone would have given it a second thought.

@@KaladinVegapunk This makes it sound a bit like Prey or the RE remakes, which I quite enjoyed because I like a touch of existential pressure mixed in with my puzzle/exploration/survival games. I think I'll try it. Thanks for the review! (Not being sarcastic; different games are appealing to different people, and constantly intense horror games aren't for me most of the time because they wear on my endurance. If I want good battle mechanics and plot that will sing like literature, I'll play an FPS/RPG, or something like Bloodborne which is just a good fighting game with a creepy skin that isn't actually anxiety-inducing.)

Golden Sun 4. Golden Sun and Golden Sun The Lost Age were masterworks of storytelling and game design and character design. I could talk all day about them. Golden Sun Dark Dawn lacked the same level of mastery that it's predecessors had, but it was fun nevertheless, and ended on a cliffhanger, with the Mourning Moon appearing as foretold. I need it.
@koconnell968
Жыл бұрын
I was gonna comment the same! Especially with the cliffhanger at the end of Dark Dawn. I feel like it really set up a lot of interesting threads for the next game. Unfortunately, I think part of the issue with Dark Dawn not getting a sequel so far is that it came out well after the majority of the original audience aged out of games or had moved on to other stuff, and the younger audience didn't have the nostalgia or knowledge to really be interested in it at the time. I think it would have found more success if they'd remastered/remade the original two games first for modern audiences before moving onto Dark Dawn. Would have given the devs a chance to refresh themselves on what made the first two great and would would have introduced new fans to the series.

I have never loved Mike more than at this moment when he accurate described IGNs review score on Alien Isolation being the most egregious review ever
A sequel to Star Wars Kotor 2 would be my pick but having VTMB 2 actually come out would be amazing.

Heck, a polished finished KOTOR 2 for all of us who couldn’t play the mods that did that would be great. Although I don’t know, all the attempts to close Revan’s dangling storylines have been… kind of depressing!
Glover from the Nintendo 64 games. Absolutely unique puzzle platformer and tons of creative solutions.
My wish from the genie is for a sequel to Blast Corps. It was such a great game, and I don't think there's anything else like it. The original worked because each mission of clearing the path for the missile carrier was very neatly packaged, while still having bit enough levels that hunting out the secrets and getting 100% was satisfying. A sequel could have larger, more open world style areas with multiple ways to fulfil the mission and get the carrier to safety. Add in more vehicles for variety, maybe some online co-op levels where you have to work together. It'd be great.

Golden Sun for me. A unique RPG that was done a big injustice by it's last title and has gone into coma afterwards. Honorable mentions: Dungeon Keeper. Red Alert/Command&Conquer. Unreal Tournament.
I still haven't given up hope on Dishonored 3 with a playable Outsider

I seem to recall Portal for Lego Dimensions was a pretty fully-fledged game with GladOs and everything
@Rocket1377

Yep, it basically continued the story from Portal 2. They even had Wheatley return, and there was a crossover with Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
It would be amazing to see the gang play V5, H5, or even any/all of the 20th anniversary editions
If I could make one game have a sequel, I would probably choose the 2008 Prince of Persia. Not only did the storyline end with the protagonist releasing evil upon the world, but there were also planned sequels. The only content that actually made it to playable state was a so-called epilogue, which basically sets the scene for the second game we never got.
The Legend of Dragoon! One of my absolute favorite ps1 games. Amazing story! Would love to see a prequel or any kind of new story in that world!

I absolutely loved it as well, it was one of the very first games I got into, although I was a bit rubbish at the interviews 😅 The whole face capture looking for tells etc. was such a unique idea and I'm not sure it's been done since, I think the graphics hold up pretty well too. It completely transported you back to that time period and the story was great, I had a secondhand copy for my 360 but realised last night I'd accidentally bought it on PS4 as well as my Switch lite so now I can play it on nearly all the platforms lol
One I want is an actual follow up to the original Mirror's Edge. Not Catalyst (though to be fair I really liked that!) But, an actual sequel, where the runners are true public enemy number one after what happened at The Shard.

I want to like Mirror's Edge, but I can't get far enough into the game before it lags out to get any real story. My PC ought to be good enough, it can run a lot of big newer games flawlessly, but there's something about Mirror's Edge that causes it to shit the bed

@@ethanderrick8486 on PC there's a huge problem I agree. My friend and I did a games jam live and it dropped to like 1 FPS at one point (think it was Chapter 3?). Apparently it's because of some of the settings which if disabled make it much much much better.
I really want Condemned 3, I need to know where the story went!. I'd also rather see Extreme G come back over FZero or Wipeout, far superior and blisteringly fast.
Mike had me hanging on every word in his opening eloquent description on videogame journalism, topped off with that classic OXbox gotcha style comedy at the end. Like the beginnings of a master class taught by a seasoned & wisened old veteran espousing on that which they know best. That being said, I am shocked SHOCKED I SAY that Ellen didn't choose a Kindoms of Amular sequel. Darn good call none the less though.
I don’t think there’s gonna be a sequel to the first game sadly Andy, I think we might have to just let sleeping dogs lie.

Open world Crimson Skies with customizable character, carrier airship and planes where you can go around attacking cargo and military airships like in AC: Black Flag, and hub areas like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Sky Haven in Free Colorado. Story as well, of course, with named characters from the series, like Nathan Zachary and his Fortune Hunters.

@@the-thhorseman2484 See I liked the Xbox version. Then again it was all I had.
Andy, you have my heart for that answer. You took the words right out of my mouth. To this day, I cannot believe that this game has been left to dust! The world, the characters, the setting, everything was perfect. The only thing you didn't mention is the music, it was amazing too, i still listen to it to this day. I just loved going around the city, hearing the street vendors and eating bao, evetything was so lively. And i absolutely ADORED the kung fu centered action and how they played with it. I've been doing martial arts all my life, and the past few years I've been doing kung fu, and this game felt so right to me. They did so many things right, it breaks my heart to see this game get lost in the sands of time... But it will forever remain in my heart.
Mike's comedy gold timing of the measured, thoughtful intro to his choice into ranting about the IGN review...beautiful. But really, every single contributor here nailed it - all of these titles were wonderful and I'd eat kittens to guarantee a follow up to any of them. Really cute kittens even.
Freespace 2 deserves a sequel! Besides being a fun space combat game that is still supported by the community, it's also an excellent cosmic horror story that left a lot of questions unanswered. Also, the intro movie to the first Freespace gave me nightmares as a child, and still gives me the chills to this day.

Nice seeing a fellow fan of the game... but I don't know, it already works well as a nice if ambiguous conclusion. Also, there's the mods Derelict and Blue Planet, although the former still has an overlong upcoming sequel if its own while the latter is regrettably unfinished.
I agree with Mike. Alien Isolation is a fantastic game that I really enjoyed playing. Creative Assembly did a really good job on the game and I can't say enough positive things about it.
Andy and Mike both made excellent choices, but the one true right answer is..... Tomodachi Life.

OMG yes, it was brilliantly bonkers! I haven't played it for ages but when I left it my mum and the Great British Bake Off judges were in a love triangle so I should go and see how that's developed 😅
I really think WET needs either a reboot or sequel. It was such a good game and felt so good and played pretty well. I remember just adoring it and was sad it never got a next gen make.... I really wanna replay it now...
The Entropy Centre demo just released for Steam NextFest and it really captures the spirit of Portal, but with a time-rewinding gun instead of a portal gun.
Prototype 3, so many loose ends and so much lore left on the table to be explored
I would love a prequel to Outer Wilds where you play as a Nomai and learn more about either their attempt to find the eye of the universe or their whole adventure which ultimately saw them crash landing on Dark Bramble. Absolutely loved that game and the DLC. I would kill for any sort of follow up
Fun fact: I was part of a focus group that was asked for our opinions about the marketing materials for SLEEPING DOGS prior to its announcement. We did not get to see any gameplay, sadly, but I had a blast once I got my hands on it. Solid choice, Andy.
I would love if we could get another Bloodborne 💜

“Lost in Shadow”! It’s a Wii game from 12 years ago that I really enjoyed. I always thought of it as being similar to Portal as a great set of mechanics loosely packaged with a storyline, and that a sequel that expands on the mechanics while delivering a great story would do it wonders, much like Portal 2 did for Portal.
An Impossible Creatures sequel would be highly appreciated
I really wish we would of got an Alien Isolation sequel, it was so good. Would liked to of seen what the same team could of done with similar games using a predator or terminator.
