Pretty neat man, I learned some stuff about the K55K I didn't know. I got mine in an Army/Navy store in Brooklyn in 1968. I carried it while tooling around the city and in both neighborhoods I lived in, Bush Terminal and Bay Ridge. It went everywhere with me. Cost me $7. Into the mid 1970's I was on an "overall" clothing thing. Practical attire for NYC and the K55K fit great in the ruler leg pocket of my overalls, real handy. Left the city in '88 and still own this knife. Don't carry it much anymore and the finish is gone. Served me well over the years, got me outta some scrapes. Ideal for subway carry. Had mine over fifty years. Now I'm old (70) and a S&W 36 does my protecting. Nice video of a swell knife. My favorite lock blade, fuhgeddaboudit.

ive carried a k55k since i was 10. so thin, more one handable than a buck, and the c75 holds a great edge. probably the biggest knife you can slip in slim suit pants, really cant say enough good things about them.

I'm happy to see you've recommended my personal favorite. The Opinel. I've owned the very same model for about 35yrs. For those who own one and didn't read the information paper or didn't buy theirs New, it's been known to be famous for the wood swelling and it's not opening. Le Knack is something they are all famous for. It's how you open them. Holding the knife between thumb and middle finger and with your index finger on top , hit the rear corner of the knife sharply on a flat surface. Voila! The blade always drops out.

I like how the old school knives like the Opinel,Higo ,Mercator and 110 are made entirely with functionality in mind and no market gimmicks.I buy them because i find them interesting but they are among the most practical knives in my collection. In any aspect-weight,size,blade profile and even steel quality.

Another thing if you like history, the Black Kat was the most common pocket knife carried by German soldiers in WWI and II. It was also pretty important in the history of folding knives with locks. Not sure if it was the first, but it was one of anyway.

I came across the Higonokami, I was very interested in them, but when I went to buy one, I panicked due to wanting an original/official one(which can get confusing when you look into then) and decided on the K55K instead, which was actually super low on my list of knives. i do not regret it at all, it's now one of my all time favorite knives. I got the Higo after awhile and I dont love it as much as I expected

For Christmas, my wife picked me up a Schrade Old Timer 1520T/702T 2015 Limited Edtition set. $13.00! I haven't tried it for much more than a kitchen knife so far, but for the most part, I'm quite impressed. With all I have done with them, they are holding their edge well. As inexpensive knives go, I thought they would be worth mentioning to you, I think you might like them. Not to mention in time, the resale will be good on them.

+Philip Lobrano With you Philip (and the other chaps who praise the Douk-Douk). Both the K55K and the Douk-Douk are great. On face value the K55K looks and feels nicer. However, in a life, looks aren't everything. The D-D, despite not having a lock, is, of the two, a lot sturdier and 'bomb-proof' knife. It also has a great blade shape which, as you say, is great for slicing.Another one I would add to the list in the Sheffield-made British Army lock jack knife. A great piece of kit.

Opinel. Hands down. You can sharpen them on anything, and they are wicked sharp. Best fisherman's knife by far. The metal when rough sharpened becomes granularly jagged, and slices straight through fish or meat. I don't know another knife with that quality. Rope? Butter. Downsides: Can get slippy with lots of guts or blood. Also the lock tends to rotate when lubricated like this. Can be a nasty surprise. Just use adhesive rubber tape around the handle pressed up to the lock, then slice the knife through it. Keeps the crap out. I have gutted hundreds of tonnes of fish with a single knife. Still have it 19 years later.

i have use the k55k, the opinel and the japanese one. the k55k is good but it can't opened with one hand. the opinel has much better blade but when it gets wet you need a plier to open it(and both hands too). the japanese has the best blade i have ever seen in a knife but it doesn't lock and it is dangerous to use or even to carry because after sometime of use the friction doen't always hold the blade closed in your pocket. this can be solved by light tapping the pin with a hammer when the blade gets loose.

When I was really young like 10 or so i remmember sitting on the bench during PE and two boys got in a fight. One of them pulled out a hawkbill knife and slashed the other one open along his stomach. It was a different time and we were bare chested most of the time during the summer when we were in gym class. Our PE teacher who was a former heavyweight amateur boxing champion knocked the kid out and grappled his knife out of his hand. The kid that was cut was bleeding so much I will never forget it. A couple of months later my friend whos dad was the chief of police sometimes gave him cool stuff that was taken as evidence( empty pistols, knives, brass knuckles...), shoved me the knife he said was used in the attack. He handed it to me and i froze. I started shaking and i could not grasp it in my hand. I was traumatized for sure. I was not afraid of knives i was just afraid of hawkbill knives. It took me about 8 years to get over that fear.

The Opinel is well priced at a little over $10 because that way you don't have to spend over $100 a year replacing the ones that break. I'm not sure if they make their blades out of glass or if somebody in France skips the tempering portion of blade making to eat some smelly cheese, but I've had 5 Opinels and broken each in less than a month.

Say Heah, I think you might like this suggestion that's why I'm sharing this with you. I got a Hansotia Black Ops Gurkha large Folder. I think that's how it's spelled, Anyhow I got it from Cigars International where I buy my cigars from, I don't think there many other knives with that name so if you check for it with a similar name that's prolly it. Hansotia makes high end customs that's why I was surprised to find them at C. I. Anyhow, Gurkha one of the cigars I smoke had a promo, So I bought the cigars and got the folder free. It's the large one, I also got the black and red smaller one again a promo with my cigars order. I only use the small one to open my boxes when I get my cigars, it's OK just for that. But the large Girls Black Ops Folder is all steel and I saw it sell for $7.95 and it's not a bad looking knife so I bought a few of them to put into the pouches in some of my knife Sheath's like on some of my BK and SP Sheath's, I think it's a pretty good price for a knife in that quality or I wouldn't let you know about it. Check it out. Actually I've used that knife this weekend when we went out for a 4th of July weekend, I had one in my BK-4 pouch which I took out for the weekend, I also teamed my BK-4 with my BK-2 and used my Mora 510 as my neck knife. I initially bought my BK-4 as a chopper, But the light went on when I realized it was called the Machaxe. I took it out to bushwhack this weekend, As a chopper the BK-9 out chops it, as a machete my Johnson Adventure Parangatang is longer and I like it better to whack my way through the brambles, But as a large knife, Just because it doesn't look like a conventional large knife, It shines, Because you can chop with it and it's not bad for a short machete. We know Curved knives slice good, and using it as a large knife, It's a real good one. I mention this because the BK-4 and the BK_5 are discontinued. I really think in time they will be collectors and the price will go up. Infact I almost didn't buy the Limited Edition because I had the 4 and 5, But I got the package anyway. Boy am I glad, even though now I have the BK-4 and BK-5 doubled, But I found out that once they sell out the 450 L. E. 's they will not produce the Bundok BK-20 and Buddy, It was well worth buying it for $250.00 I had to pay for mine since I got on the band wagon late, Infact where I bought mine from, I bought the last one. Ethan Becker verified this on Blade Forums. I almost didn't buy my L. E. Package thinking they would be selling for less by themselves. Boy was I wrong, Infact they will not sell anymore of them at all. My Bundok BK-20 looks similar to the Bark River 1909 Michigan Bowie, I think their both the same size. And I always liked the CarbonV Steel and I own (2) Recon Scout's, one that I use, The other one is virgin that even has the warning tape on it on how sharp the blade is and in the Cordura Sheath. Well my Bundok BK-20 is the same steel. Anyhow, Yeah, Check out the Gurkha Black Ops large folder for eight bucks, I think your going to like it. See I'm giving back to your channel and what it did for me. HAPPY 4th OF JULY !!!

All great choices, except the pruning blades are limited in that they can't be used for all types of food prep. I wish more of the smaller modern knives nowadays had a lanyard hole for keys or little flashlight, although Buck Bantam lockback does. As for Victorinox, I love them all, but prefer Pioneer over the Cadet.

Mary Cahill - re the pruning blade - I think he's making an allusion to a Karambit style fighting knife ("cough, cough") but in a package that is literally a pruning knife and could be justified as such to the authorities

Thanks for this Vid, I enjoyed it. Simple, direct info. I have a suggestion for your consideration. The "electricians" knife, that you mentioned, recalls a fond memory for me. My nephew was injured on the job as an electrician, and during his recovery, I came across an old "Barlow" electricians knife at a flea market. I subsequently gave it to him as a sign of encouragement during his recovery, and he was thrilled with receiving it ! My suggestion is that you do a series of knife reviews for "workman style knives"...such as the type I mentioned, i.e., those designed for a "targeted purpose", both old and new. Perhaps you could call it ,"The Purposeful Knives Series "....?? Thanks anyway if you don't use the idea. I like your vids very much.

I have one of those, super cheap, strong handle and good large Krupp steel blade, but I struggle to get used to the ringlock. Hard to knock it for quality vs. price though even if I do know a lot of people who cut themselves pretty badly shutting it before they got used to it.

I would never take a folder to the bush or for everyday carry that couldn't be opened with one hand. What if you're unable to use both hands? I appreciate the fact that the Buck 110 has an old fashioned, retro appeal, but Buck themselves recognize the value of one handed opening. Is there any downside in not making all folders one handed opening?
