    My father worked on Groupama 3, he was one of the mechanics, he wouldn't go on board for records but he was preparing the boat, and when she capsized near NZ, he had to go and bring back the pieces, so rn I have a 3-4m section of her mast in my garden...

    To be udpated ? New flying trimarans are now ready for "la Transat Jacques Vabre 2021" : Actual Ultim 3, Sodebo 3, Banque Populaire XI, Gitana 17, SVR Lazartigue...for the moment, there are not as fast as the "Hydroptere" but they can cross oceans. All are marvels from France, like the 5 mentioned in this video.

    I'm sorry but Groupama 3 done often 40 knots during training day and do 46 knots to speed many time during round the world record ( and still have this record ). 46 knots = 85 km/h ... And Lending Club 2 is Groupama 3 ! ... sic Forget about also MOD70, they are far under Giant. Where is MACIF, Sodedo etc ?

    If lending club and groupama 3 look similar its because it's litteraly the same boat it was commissioned in 2006; beated the circum navigation record twice, first under groupama colors in 2008 and a second time in 2016 unde idec sport's color with a mast ten meter shorter, it also won the route du rhum 3 edition in a row: in 2008 as groupama 3, in 2012 as banque populaire 7 and in 2016 as idec sport, a truly impressive machine that can be cited as the ledgendary boat of the racing world like the pen duick series, pierre premier, orange 2 and so many other

    Well, it looks like they got the main problems out of the way. Like the deck area between hulls, gone! No more push over airspace in full tilt. Yet, I wonder how a 70 ft boat with a 45 ft beam can ever come to mean something to the yachting world, other than a cool essay in ?

    Bruce, What do you mean by the last sentence? These are some of the most powerful vessels ever devised! They have travelled across oceans faster than the fastest oil driven beasts. They have circumnavigated the world in 40 days 13hours! Not even a nuclear vessel has done that! Oh and that was using wind alone!! Cool Essay? Which “yachting World”?

    @@bruceruttan60 If you can bend the side skiffs in it is perfectly suitable for a tight budget cruising family. Take the Corsair 970, it is bare-bone (think camping) inside but brings you everywhere flying. Another concept is the Neel 51, pricey but more than enough room for the average motorhome family who has some money lying around. Two examples which hopefully show you some inside in its possibilities .😎

  • @simonrano8072

    @simonrano8072

    There is no direct relation between wind speed and boat speed. Sailing is not based on using a tail wind to push the boat forward but using a side wind to creat a forward force like an aircraft wing. The larger the sail, the stronger the force, the faster the boat and the lesser the water/air resistance, the faster the boat. As the wind is sideway the force is still the applied even when the boat is faster than the wind. The foils almost cancel water resistance by getting the boat hull above the surface, allowing higher speeds. They generally dont intentionnaly go to 70 kmh wind areas and if they face such conditions they generally reduce the sail to avoid snapping the mast of flipping the boat.

    @@pauljrcarty9314 I don't know what sail configuration is used in high winds situations, depends a lot on the boat design and the roughness of the sea. The first ranked boat in this video used 70 kmh wind conditions to reach 50 + knt (100 kmh). Ongoing world tour record attempt is currently going 70 kmh in 40 kmh wind.
