A few years go my car nut colleagues were really excited when I told them I had just bought a car that was mid-engined, all-wheel drive and supercharged. Then they saw that it was a Previa. :-)

Turning that V12 sideways in the Lamborghini just made perfect sense. The car was wide enough anyway, so why not a shorter wheelbase to increase body stiffness?

Okay all of these seems pretty usual in fact. Let's talk about some serious engineering madness : Cizeta V16T. Transversely rear-mid mounted V16 engine, with output shaft located in the middle of the engine, crankshaft having a forged angle gear between what looks like 2 V8. Gearbox is at the rear of the assembly BUT the output shafts to the wheels are also located in the *middle* of the gearbox, the differential being included inside the whole drivetrain.

  • @aussiebloke609

    @aussiebloke609

Putting the output in the middle of the crank was a stroke of genius. With a crankshaft that long, it would be prone to flex at high rpm if they tried to take the power off the end. A seriously sweet car, and (IMHO) a very nice design. Unlike the Diablo, which appears to have the rounder V16T front end grafted onto an angular Countach rear. (I blame Chrysler for that - apparently, the V16T is actually Gandini's original design for the Diablo before Chrysler came in and changed things, pissing off Gandini in the process.) :-) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cizeta-Moroder_V16T

Another Examples: Nissan GT-R - Front Engine, Transaxle Gearbox which means one Shaft goes from engine to gearbox and from the gearbox another shaft back to the front to Power the Front wheels, it s a bit like 180 degrees switched layout from the ford RS200 Ferrari FF V12 / GT4 Lusso V12: it has an All Wheel Drive System but with unique system: Rear Wheels are driven by the 7 Speed Gearbox transaxle - The Front Wheels are attached to another 2 Speed Gearbox mounted in front of the engine. the AWD works up to 250kmh, above the car is pure RWD.

We had a Previa back over a decade ago and it was easily the best van I've ever seen. It was a 5 speed, AWD, SUPERCHARGED inline 4 with those incredible captain seats, dual moonroofs, a mini fridge and the most room of any minivan on the market today. The build quality and design was ahead of its time, it truly was the greatest van ever built.

Probably no-one. Getting traction would be hard since there's not much weight over the front wheels, especially under acceleration. It would be interesting to see how a RF layout would handle on a track. Oversteer, understeer, combination of both?

The transversly mounted I6 imresses me the most because they kept the transmition to the side of the engine unlike what lamborghini did to easly safe space. The Daewoo magnum also had a inline 6, transversly mounted but it had very small bore of the cylinders to make it short.

ROTFL - You left out the best one! Lamborghini Countach, 1974 ~ about 1990. Mid rear V12, about 5 ~ 6 litres (depending on year, it grew.) Engine longitudinally mounted, quite conventional, but Boss Lamborghini wanted the gearbox in the normal place, right under his elbow, so the gear-stick really was a gear-stick, not a dummy connected to linkages or cables. Ferrari dealt with this by grafting on a metal gate, which gave the illusion of precision, so the gear-change felt like the bolt of an expensive rifle. Lamborghini didn't do that, he put the gearbox where God & Henri Ford put it, under the gear-knob. So the clutch was in front of the engine, and then the gearbox, but the input and output of the gearbox were both at the back, and then the prop-shaft went back through the sump of the engine, with seals on both ends, and then into a differential behind the engine. Suffice to say this is not a simple or completely logical arrangement, but the Boss demanded it, because nothing else FELT right.

The 1960s-era Ford Falcon Econoline and Dodge (USA) / Fargo (Canada) A100 vans also featured mid-mounted engines between and behind the driver and passenger, while the Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier had a rear mounted air cooled flat six similar to the VW Transporter. Neat stuff!

Another winner, Mr. Visio :-) My favourite oddball layout is the Cooper Twini - a Mini (proper, not BMW!) fitted with an additional engine and transmission in the rear. Four-wheel drive with no interconnection between front and rear - and two manual gearboxes shifted by one gear lever. A great power-to-weight ratio for the time. One of them nearly killed John Cooper when a rear radius rod let go at speed under test, but a very cool beast and well worth a look. Keep smiling, friend!

The mid engine minivans impressed me the most. Minivans are meant to be comfortable, so putting the engine near the passengers is risky, as any vibrations will be more noticeable (which could cause issues with comfort, especially if the engine is not very smooth running.)

Oh, and there's two other places you'll find a transverse inline-6 - both of them motorcycles. The Benelli Sei (initially 750cc in 1974, later 900cc in 1979) and the even more ludicrous Honda CBX of 1978, both featured transverse inline 6 engines, which made for some, shall we say, *interesting* dynamics when coupled to 1970s era motorcycle suspension. :)

Renault 5 had the gearbox in front of the engine for FWD. And the Countach had the gearbox in front of the mid mounted engine with a shaft going back through the sump to a rear differential. It was this arrangement that allowed the easy conversion to 4 wheel drive on later Lambos. Austin/Morris pioneered the placing of the gearbox in the sump, under the engine. There was a prototype Mini with a front transverse engine driving the rear wheels. It was the Fiat 128 that pioneered the modern FWD layout buy transversely mounting an engine off to the side with gearbox on the end, that was viewed as weird when it came out. Although W O Bentley had thought of this much earlier using the Cotal electrically selected gearbox.

If you enter the realm of ww2 tanks, many of them, like the M4 Sherman or Pz VI Tiger, had the engines mounted in the rear while the drive sprocket were in the front. Tracks are not the same of course. These are the closest examples we have to Rear engine - front wheel drive vehicles.

iirc the Previa was also built on the Celica GT-Four's drivetrain too. I remember a lot of people taing those previas offroad because unlike a normal minivan/MPV they could actually handle it thanks to the clica's drivetrain.

I miss Tatra 613 on the list - V8 emgine mounted above the rear axle, with differential output running under the center bearing. Had they made a V6 version, it'd be mid engine - something unique for a 4-door sedan.

Actually, a mid mounted engine connected to a front gearbox, with a shaft then passing back to the rear wheels, was a standard layout for top end Lamborghinis from the Countach onwards. Countach, Diablo, Murcielago & Aventador all feature this layout. I suspect it's also present in the Gallardo and Huracan.

The Bucciali TAV 8-32 was a car in the 1930's with a reverse longitudinal V12 Voisin engine, with a front transaxle. it was also called the TAV 12 (since the design had been changed from a Bucciali V16 to a Continental straight-8 to a Voisin V12 during the development period of the single car that would ever be produced.) it was a shame that Bucciali didn't receive the orders they had worked very hard for. just goes to show you that no matter how great your car is, you can't make an expensive car during a depression.

Top models Leyland Austin Princess used the same 2.2 litre straight six in a transverse mounted FWD arrangement. The engine was a match for a modern BMW inline six in terms of smoothness. Can't say the same in terms of power and economy. But for its era it was impressive. Far nicer than Ford's raucous 2.3 litre V6 that powered high spec Cortinas in the 1970s.
