Serato Sample is the first sampler i thought of when you said “best samplers.” Glad it was number 1. After studying a bunch of samplers, i pretty much only use Serato now and sometimes Iris by Izotope. Serato will also add the stems feature soon which they have in Serato Studio which will make it the greatest undisputed sampler of all time.

Some of my best and unique sampled beats came from the freedom of placing and stretching samples with no quantization, straight in the playlist. I usually chop all my samples by hand in Edison, snap to samples, and then I move it to slicex cause it plays slices smooth.

Serato sample is pretty great but some cons are it doesn't respond to velocity changes which is truly absurd and you can't loop sections of your slices to make long notes. Almost the one vst sampler to rule them all.

The thing I never see mentioned is slicing your chops in edison and then time-stretching the individual chops in the playlist to a beat or a bar and finally re-pitching, editing and lining everything up in the sequencer..it might be a little more tedious but if you don’t have serato sample it’s gonna give you the most control over individual chops..plus you can make copies of the chops for different tweaks

Thanks for compiling this, it's really helpful. One thing I'm curious of is, does serato sample have a function where you can assign loop points so that when you sustain a note, it loops on the assigned points (similar to Edison) if that makes sense? The loop points function is really cool and I think if serato sample has that, that would be very useful. Cheers 😊

I used momentum a lot when just learning, and I agree, it's kind of too much and too big for a lot of the stuff you really want to do. You don't need all the features it comes with, you just want to go samples as fluidly as possible. My BPM input always bugs out to the point I need to type in a BPM elsewhere, copy it, then paste into the field and hope I guessed right. I moved onto Koala mobile app to make beats partially because it's more convenient than say home, but also because the sampling workflow is so much better.

It's incredible to me how difficult fl studio makes so many things that should be so simple. I ended up using like, Acoustica Mixcraft 4 back when I was like 12 or 13, just messing around on it. Not a sampling/beat making focused type of daw at all in comparison to fl. BUT everything spoke about in the first half of this video as problematic in FL, were things i was able to do SO EASILY and absolutely intuitively in Mixcraft - at 13 yrs old with no DAW experience at all. Yes I've had absolute hell trying to learn FL after coming from that, even ~15 years later lol. Waiting on a new computer to come in today after no music making in the past 5 years... plan to either get Mixcraft or another DAW just like it with similar workflow!

Serato Sample can do everything the alternatives can do, and more and it’s much easier. Definitely worth it. But it’s not the best for timestreching within a sample. Some songs just don’t loop perfectly or line up to a grid when looped. I always start with Edison to quickly find the transients to start and end a loop that I like. Then throw it into NewTime to get the timing perfectly with the grid or whatever feel I want. Then into Serato Sample for any manipulating.

I'm still quite new to this and Ableton is really good tbh, I was using Reaper but most of the tutorials for LoFi were in Ableton so though Reaper is a programming work of art, I had to go with familiarity. The way it's laid out is great to get to know your way around elementary music production. Why does every single one sampler/slicer review miss out on bringing up initial slice by initial audio? Would love to hear your thought on it, maybe a future review? I think it has a lot of top tier sounds but I’m struggling with getting the most out of it and I don’t know if it is me that sucks or it is the plug-in that is hard to navigate..

  • @Alckemy
    @Alckemy Жыл бұрын

I’ve got some hard disagreements with that first take but that’s because the learning curve is much higher. It has more manipulation with it just being a sample… beyond stretching you have warp modes, transposing, and making each sample chop unique, think like one sample becomes reverse and another on the same track is stretched granularly. things like bitwig automatically sync it to your bpm too. Audio manipulation is king. It’s hard to learn though.

i started making beats using maschine (which i think is actually great for boombap approach to beat making) and i brought serato immediately after trying their sampler (which is actually better than fl's imo). it's an amazing tool imo however i hate the update that created a bunch of buttons on the grid. i think they undermined those of us who use things like maschine mk3 and other 16 pad beat making hardware. i still use an old version which is fine but they should have given ppl a choice (16 vs 160000 or whatever).

Serato is a winner because they know how to make music software that is POWERFUL yet FUN. I have so many plugins that I will never use (Steinberg comes off the top of my mind, haha - great presets in Halion, but I've given up on ever digging in further, same for other sampling workstation type plugins). Serato almost seemed too fun/easy and I held off but I got it on sale; it's one of the few plugins that I'd recommend at normal price though... it just works well, and while some people wish it had this or that, it already has so much as it is and works the way just about anyone would want it to.

I tried mementum serato sample and initial slice and sliceX is better than them all. It has the cons that you mentioned but it allows you to automate chops volume playback speed panning and many other parameters with envelopes and allows you to set cutting groups to chose trigger keys to stretch pitch shift replace or even mix a single chop with your own sample. SliceX is the best loop slicer in the game the only thing that serato sample does and sliceX does not is scale detection and when it comes to tempo detection sliceX does it way more accurately than serato try and see. By the way you dont have to open the menu to time stretch a single chop in sliceX all you have to do is press alt+T

Momentum still not support some audio files, but you can drag to a track in your daw and now drag to momentum. Be sure you are in slice mode

Momentum sounds always hardcore chopped. Like I turned the attack of each chop high up. Otherwise it's great. Someone any idea how to fix this?

Ableton simpler surprisingly good instrument. It can do everything that all this plugins can. The only problem I have with it, changing pitch for different slices possible only in drum rack. So you always need have a back up in case you slice your sample in drum rack and want to go back. Otherwise simpler so much comfortable than all this plugins.

I rather use the combination Fruity Slicer + Edison. First chop it up in Edison, than drag it over into Fruity Slicer. I don't use the build-in filters from Slicex nor the envelopes, rather use the Love Philter for that. And Slicex is heavy on CPU compared to Fruity Slicer. Always get errors when i copy Slicex several times. And if i want to time-stretch a chop i just go into edison and do it there. (got that from you) And simply replace the Fruity Slicer. Simple

I WAS using Serato Sample and loved it, but I'm using a Mac Studio now and Serato advise they won't be making it natively Apple Silicon M1/2 compatible, and Rosetta is not in my future so, I need something else right now. I use Logic Pro, so I'm messing with their in-built sampler right now, but it's also limited in functionality, so I'll take a look at some of the other options.

Exactly. I loved Serato Sample but I have a a brand new M1 Pro Mac with Ventura and Serato Sample shit the bed. It hasn’t been updated in well over a year as the devs are focused on Serato Studio. I’m on the hunt for a new sampler myself

Another very annoying aspect of SliceX that bothers users for years is the fact that you have to manually add the "cut" and "cut by" function of every single chop.

  • Жыл бұрын

Serato Sample is STILL incompatible with M1. You have to run it under rosetta otherwise AUHostingCompatibility will make your CPU usage go above 100%. Serato support just ignores the issue and keep pushing their products out there. For those using Apple Silicon, stay away.
