About Us.
I share our organic homestead, called Byther Farm, with my loving partner, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Monmouthshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
There is a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
I'm currently exploring permaculture farming as a way of life.
We keep hybrid chickens and also have breeding flocks of Jersey Giants and Australorp chickens and Aylesbury ducks.

    Some nice plants there - apart from the asparagus I'm growing all the others. Others to think of can include sorrel (or a variety called profusion which doesn't bolt), Good King Henry (aka Lincolnshire Spinach), , Scorzonera, Daubentons Kale ( there's a green and a variegated variety called Panache), Turkish Rocket, Wild Rocket, Jersey Kale, Sweet Cicely, Lovage/Scots Lovage, Cardoon (a relative of the Globe Artichoke grown for the leaf stems), mashua, chuffa

  • @LizZorab

    @LizZorab

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi! We have scorzonera, wild rocket, sweet cicely and lovage. I grew cardoon in my last garden, but never really liked the taste of it much so mostly it just ended up flowering and providing food for the birds with the seed heads - a valuable thing in itself, but we decided not to give it space in the productive areas in this garden. I could still be tempted to put it in a flower border :-) Sorrel - I let it go to seed 3 years ago and I'm still pulling it up all over the place!

    Fantastic video Liz. I love the idea of perennial vegetables. I hope to harvest my first tomato in the next couple of days. I just must not cut it too early . I have watered for 6 weeks but should have given the plant more feed . It will have cost a lot as I will be passing the plant on to a family member. When will you start to harvest your tomatoes and will it be too late in 2 weeks time to buy tomato plants in Wales? Love from Margaret

  • @LizZorab

    Hi Margaret, if you are buying tomato plants it may be worth look at grafted ones (I have no idea whether they are better or not, but the plants I've seen look larger and healthier). The weather is still pretty cool, so I would say it's not too late, but you'll need to expect a later harvest and keep your fingers crossed that late blight doesn't hit the plants :-)

    Skyrit? Is it related to salisify? I used to use a lot of Salsify in hotel kitchens, it has a mustard/liquorice flavour and it's the root used for cooking, very nice poached in white wine or chopped very finely and added to flavour rice when cooking a Lamb Tagine, use sparingly it is strong, with rose water it flavours cous-cous for a Tagine beautifully, adding that Moroccan aroma.

  • @LizZorab

    Hi, it's skirret, I don't know if it's related to salsify, but it could well be. I've grown salsify here this year but the roots are very small and twisted together, they would have to be something incredibly special for me to bother with all the cleaning that would be needed to get them into the cooking pot.
