I didn’t know how to draw before I started tattooing. Now I make 6 figures a year tattooing. If you want it bad enough it will happen. I did have to learn how to draw but that being said. I think learning how to spit shade tattoo flash as the most quintessential Technique you should learn to become a tattooer

This actually gave me some motivation to actually get into tattooing. I'm not that big into drawing, nor am i really good at it. I'll have the urge to draw every few months, but usually it's a little cartoon that I'll look at and copy, not trace, but draw by looking at said image. And now I'm considering picking up a tattoo machine and doing a few tattoos and see where it goes

Do you think tattooing could be done as a side hustle?

@@jonathanfigueroa1012 If you don't feel the urge and desire to be drawing all the time already, tattooing for a living might be hell on earth for you brother. I would advise finding stuff (images) that you find to be really cool and inspirational to you, and taking the time to draw/copy them exactly as they are. Take no less than 6 hours on every drawing, and ideally more like 15 to 20 hours in multiple sessions for a fully finished drawing. If you find it boring and a chore and feel like abandoning the drawing unfinished after the first 3 hours, then it's probably a sign you will not like Tattooing. Prepping a design to tattoo it unto someone is a really detailed and time consuming process. Your planning of the different stages of a tattoo has to be on point, because you will many times complete bigger tattoos in multiple sessions. The one constant among all of the best tattooers I've ever come across is that they all draw all the time. While they watch TV, on a napkin while they wait for food at restaurants, while they chat with you at home over beers, while they wait at the doctor's office. These days I see everyone on their iPads drawing in procreate all the time. Again, if that sounds tedious... you might want to rethink it. Drawing for fun when you feel like it is totally fine. You have the pleasure of doing it when you want to. But once you take on the responsibility of doing it for a living, and more so for tattooing humans... make sure you are ready for a serious commitment.

Right on ma man, congrats and tnxs for the contribution
Knowing how to draw and knowing how to create tattoos are two completely different things like being good at drawing will help but designing a tattoo is so much different. Atleast for me it was
I really want to get into tattooing so for years, I have been practicing doing tattoo designs for people. I will ask them what they want, they will give me a detailed run down or a vague description of their idea, I will go through Google and collect relative pieces for their design and we continuously go back and for till they are satisfied. I do it for practice, so I don’t ask for any payment. So yeah, I have a decent ability to make up a design on the spot. But your advice has given me some good ideas. So thank you very much for that.
Thank you! The only video I’ve seen so far of someone actually explaining their process, this is exactly what I need honestly
I dont comment on videos often, but you SIR have helped me and the rest of us beginners tremendously, THANK YOU!
The drawing calendar is a brilliant piece of advice. Thank you for sharing ✌🏼
Thank you! I felt very validated by you saying it’s good to trace things

right, I took a photo of my hand for a reference and when I presented a portfolio to an artist in my town and he basically told me I wasn't a real artist because I didn't draw it with no reference and "real artists don't need references" safe to say we were not a good fit anyways.
Thank you so much for this. I’ve been getting more into traditional and realistic designs from doing mainly cartoon-style work (looking for apprenticeship) and I’ve been going from scratch. But it is so much easier to trace the realism stuff from photographs, and it’s also helped me better know the proportions for other styles and designs I want to try outside of realism! Thank you for this video ❤
I’m starting my quest into drawing traditionals and hopefully one day I can be a tat artist
Awesome stuff as always! I can't draw but I've given myself 4 tattoos and it's really about being able to color, shade, and consistency.
Nathan, I miss seeing your videos!!!! You have so much insight and I love your honesty, creativity, knowledge, and your ability to stay ahead of the game! Please do more videos!

Do you have a video that gives you strategy on which lines to include in a stencil? Like if your source image is super detailed, how to decipher what’s worth including in the stencil vs what’s not?

My first day of my apprenticeship is tomorrow and you’re comforting my anxiety 😵💫
Nice video. Amazing tips! I’ve been doing art since I was a kid I’m now an animator but I wanna learn tattoo
Question: do you think that having a mostly digital portfolio will hurt your chances of getting an apprenticeship? Over 90% of what I do is digital on Procreate, mostly because I invested in the iPad as opposed to having to buy consumable physical supplies.
@Tattooing101
8 ай бұрын
It shouldn't because these days most artists will be using procreate anyway as their primary medium for making designs. But that could depend on how 'traditional' the artist in the shop you're hoping to apprenticeship under is.
every video is very helpfu😊l, i started following it recently, can anyone tell me what is the obo program for sketching pictures?
Any chance to get the doc? Can't find it anymore. Thank you for all your suggestions
Can u do a video on how to trace the picture and how to do the layers on procreate I’m a new learner
Man you say what i was thinking, you need something to build.thanks
It's the technique of realism it's very hidden at the moment u can even pause a movie on pc screenshot the person u want to tattoo if its a celebrity trace it it and its done gread vid
My drawing skills tbh are made for tattooing. Realist, traditional looks a piece of cake with all due respect. Ten years ago i wanted to and should've but now nothing is going to stop me. And thank you so much as it has motivated me even more. With stencils it's so easy for me. Again thanks.
Nice 👍
very helpful, but how to download the calendar? it only forwards me to something i have to pay for
What line brush do you use for the final flash artwork in procreate?

Studio Pen or Technical Pen are great final outline brushes.
Good advice

I know guys that are amazing artist but struggle with Tattooing! It’s definitely a craftsmanship
Can you make a video on how to shade correctly with realism? Also would you recommend practicing shading on the iPad through procreate? Or just getting the stencil ready then practicing the shading on fake skin

I apprenticed for a bit before covid ruined it and my mentor said practice with a pen. Its unforgiving like tattooing and you have to be gentile like tattooing as well as building up areas.

@@jasperatymrochwite7275 i rlly love this too i’m gonna use this!
How do you color like that? I can never get my coloring on procreate to look like that .
What’s the drawing pad that your sketching on in the video?
Thank you for this video, I was recently 'let go' from my previous apprenticeship because I couldn't "draw from scratch" and it made me question my artistic ability. Admittedly, I'm not great at drawing from scratch, but I have been practicing realism for years before I ever approached a tattoo shop with my portfolio. I was getting mixed signals because he liked my realism but also wanted to see my "artistry". I don't think it was intentional, but it felt like he tried to push my style to be something it's not. :/

Sorry to hear that, sounds like you had a bit of a D!ck as a mentor..they say if you stick to one style and specialise in it,it is a good thing coz then your best at that thing in your area ..so just keep doing your thing ✌️
What brush set (for procreate) was worth the money and you would highly recommend?

Hey man, I actually recently made a video about this talking about the brush sets I use in detail! Feel free to check it out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pW1pw6OYj7fOdpc.html
Where do I find the link to Google Sheets doc. Thank You.
Drawing on a survive with pencil/pen for iPads and stuff is totally different than a tattoo gun. That’s what someone told me.
I saw the jack Nicholson portrait that looked amazing but I've also seen so many portraits that don't look anything like the person so why do you think that is?
What tablet is best for pro create?
I would love to take yours and Brandon style and put them together with alil of my skill in there too . bc yall are the 2 artists i like the most love yall work
I have a question hopefully you can answer I know it doesn't have to do with the topic of the video but I was wondering if you might know. I just ordered some new needle cartridges and the needles don't look straight they all look like the angle to the side. Is this normal. Not something I noticed before but I had got 2 different brands of 1rl and 3rl both brands same thing
Please tell me of an app like procreate for Android please
Hello I was wondering, if you don’t learn how to draw hands and then your stencil messes up, what do you do?
Norman Rockwell used a projector, and if you're an artist under any time constraint, you're going to have to work faster
I just read the stinky client story ....but this is great
Is that an iPad pro?
What kind of drawing pad are you using?

I have problem on skull drawing what easy way do it
@sick983
Жыл бұрын
Skulls are actually relatively easy when broken into basic shapes, it's essentially a sphere with things protruding from it. Hard to tell not show I would look up some artists showing how to find those basic shapes and build from that.
Where’s the link for the google sheet ?

So you are basically saying to use other artists as a muse ?

Drawing isn't the same as tattooing. Tattooing is 99%tracing. The rest is technical know how.
Did you really say realism is beginner friendly!? Imma go pick a different hobby, thanks tho! hahaha

Common misconception with realism is that people think most artists are drawing these designs freehand. (But really they're not)
Thank you so much. You guys are the best!! I learned so much by now.
