When I first bought my house 15 years ago, I used the formal dining room as my kids’ playroom, 10 years after that, it was used as my husband’s office, when we retire I’m going to use it as my yoga room! Your home is your place, use it as you see fit. 🥰❤️

We love to play board games and cards. So we got rid of the dining room table and bought a small live edge type table, put a sofa into the room, painted it dark, and changed it in to a lounge for our game playing. We use it so much more than we ever used our dining room.

Same - any house that we've lived in that had a dining room - we never used it as a dining room, it always filled a different need for us at the time.

Love your style! For me, I only use the rules as guidelines to find solutions to my decorating fails when something I envisioned isn’t quite working in my space. Sometimes the things we love or that make us “feel good” can have the opposite effect when it is just “on display.” For me, everything in my space needs to have purpose. Things in my space that are not used daily, or at least frequently, feel like clutter to me. For example, a pretty dish from grandma’s china can be used on the bedside table to place jewelry before bed. Or as a soap dish where we think of her each time we wash our hands. Rather than a whole wall of unused china that rarely causes us to pause and think of grandma.

I use my Persian rugs. They seem to be out of vogue right now, but I love them! I could sit for hours staring at them and finding patterns that I hadn't noticed before.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have learned so much from you about color and styling, but we have to be creative and make our homes appealing to our senses. I am so tired of videos that tell us we must style everything the same way. I don’t want my home to be a mirror of every youtube video. And I love RH but it has to be made your own so it looks like a home and not a showroom. I love it when my husband comes home and says he loves how our home feels or family comes by and comments on how our space looks and feels. Thank you again Valentina. You are the best!

A reader would probably never do it. Nor would they put their books in the bookcases with the binding not visible. Just indicates that they’re mainly there for decor.

With your encouragement I painted our two piece bathroom black. Flooring is white and grey. Cabinet white (and toilet lol) but the walls and ceiling and door are black! Sorry jack, I’ll leave a cookie trail for you to find your way out lol. It’s sooo glamorous for a small bathroom. I would never have had the courage without your inspiration. Thank you❤️

I absolutely LOVE black. All of my trim is black, bathroom beadboard and even kitchen backsplash and lower cabinets lol. It’s just so luxurious to me

My main rule broken is to use personal items I love. I don’t have anything that I use for impact only. Gotta love it

I read an article about increasing happiness by surrounding yourself with sentimental and personal items. I would way rather hang art my son painted than something from a chain store that a million other people have. Or an interesting rock we picked up on a hike than a ceramic doodad that matches my drapes.

I love different ceilings in spaces! My mom is an interior designer and she’s even wallpapered ceilings before! It’s so cool!

Valentina, how nice to see your painted ceilings, esp that beige one in the white room. I feel freer, somehow, having that visual in my mind now! My bathroom ceiling was a gorgeous reddish orange almost raspberry color, and so pretty. However, it was so vibrant and high up it called attention to itself. I’ve revisited the OG bathtub and reintroduced all white fixtures and incorporated warm woods, so decided to paint the ceiling to go with the fresh white walls. Love it now even more than before, as it „goes“ better and looks so clean and smooth. Everyone notices the tub now, and the dark wood beadboard (the effect I wanted).

Definitely mix styles and I do display personal items. You do dark colors so well! I haven’t been that adventurous yet! Never thought about painting the ceiling another color other than white

When we had our entire house’s interiors repainted, we painted the ceilings as well. It always looked funny to me to see painted walls and white ceilings.

I love dark colors too 🥰 have painted 2 tall walls mat black in My livingroom, Black in one bathroom, dark Grey in the kitchen, one wall dark gray/brown in the laundry room and My oldes son also have at Matt black wall 👌 I love black, White and Grey 😍

I was inspired by your powder room color. I painted mine the same color ceiling, walls and door :)

My ceilings and all trim are white.I like the continuity.The walls are all painted colors. The great room is yellow, warm buttery in the kitchen, dining a bit darker and living area darker still (gets most sunshine there). Our office/guest bedroom is Aegean blue, my husband’s favorite color. There are white built ins on one wall. Our tiny master (12x11) with three white doors, has white cupboards on either side of the bed. The walls will soon be a pale lime.The draperies over the bed are a damask in that green plus white.Besides white, we have galleries of family photos, because they bring me joy when I look up from reading a book in bed and see them. That’s the key, Valentina, include whatever brings you joy!

I wanna paint my baseboards now that I have been following you. I had never thought to do it. I want to try in master since I am overhauling it anyway. A tiny powder room is a great place to use dark colour and give it a real vibe. I know you asked the other day about what everyone thought about special finishes like sponging, having done several projects years ago I’m not sure I would again but I have lots of art being an artist so like a gallery feel personally. Your husband is quite the comedian.... get lost in the powder room 🤣 I guess that was code for don’t like dark doors.

We are in the process of building our dream home on two acres, walls are, cement poured, turtle slow process due to covid rules her in Niagara on the Lake Ontario Canada but work is well underway, perfect video for the stage we are at. If you need a home gym with floor space and not a formal living room, make the gym. If you need an office and not a dining room, make it. Lots of people think that rooms have to be used for their original purpose but it doesn't apply to their lifestyle and those living and dining rooms sit empty used only st thed holidays and are crammed into the rest of the house every other day.

I’m so enjoying your amazing videos. Ceilings painted a contrasting color can look amazing. I saw a high gloss greenish/black paneled library and the ceiling was a blue wash. It was stunning. Question? Can you paint a ceiling a contrasting color if your ceilings are only 8’? Or a different shade of the wall color. Or will it just make the low ceiling more obvious.

I’ve always loved smallish and darkish rooms painted very dark colors, embracing the dark. It makes them instantly stylish and dramatic. One question, please - just as you pulled the dark color across the ceiling in your dark rooms, does that look okay IF you have low ceilings? Or what if there’s a crown moulding? I’ve painted crown mouldings the same shade as the wall in a high gloss but I’ve not gone straight across the ceiling. Thank you.

This was a great video of information! I was thrilled to discover your channel a few months ago. I’ve watched everyone you’ve made. I think you are great wealth of decorating info. Your channel is the only decorating video subscribed too. Also, follow you on Instagram. You and your husband are enjoyable & funny. You always look beautiful! Thank you for your channel. I have learned from you to make my own wall decor i love your house, and have taken some of the decor and painted it I have always displayed family decor. I’m thrilled to know this is something you embrace also it. I display mostly with my husbands daughter gifts including travel finds. The rest is story bought decor. I buy some great decor I That we love. This might upset you or others on this comment. But, I started going to goodwill and buying coffee table books, cookbooks , etc.if I love the book or decor and it’s not in my color palette. I paint the covers and decor to match I have a variety of decor that I’ve collected in 35 years from nice places. I still use them, but a few weeks ago changed everything I could to s different color palette snd the inspiration came from you. Thank you both for your very lovely videos.

I definitely love the no match hardware and I was thinking of changing out my hardware in the kitchen. I thought it had to match so I love the no rules. One rule I do break is no family photos don’t ask why but I just never wanted them except a little bit sprinkled here and there.

Good for you for painting color on your ceilings and painting small rooms dark!! I hate it when decorators say to paint small rooms a light color, and to use small furniture in small rooms. Go bold! Go big!😀

Love this video👏...You are great😊 I never listen to such rules either👏... I think the only design rules of importance are eg. Lighting, hight, size and positioning of furniture, pictures on the walls, colour palettes etc... It would be great if you discussed these rules/guidelines that REALLY are important to make a space feel cohesive!🙏☺️ In Europe you rarely see "matchy-matchy" furniture... But compatible furniture. "No personal decor"... True we don't have family pictures huge all over the walls in Europe.. Because people change, so the photos get outdated.. We tend to do small photos in gallery form on a small discreet wall (more for our own pleasure, not to show guests) which can be quickly and easily changed out.. I grew up knowing it as "Rogues Gallery" 🤣.. Because it is usual photos full of the (cheeky😉) kids/grandchildren. All my other decor is ONLY personal!I do not like staged/pre-fab/off the shelf "trendy" homestore decor .. As you say the decor should show the personality and life of the people living in the home (eg from day trips, experiences, travel...whatever) .... On all my global travels🌍, since I was 18yrs old, I always invested in an art piece (paintings) or wood/pottery sculptures (no tacky tourist memorabilia) which are all over my house and remind me of that place I travelled 🌏 to every time I look at them😊. I love all my paintings which are very aclectic in style.. Because they are originals.. Some oil, some acrylic, some water.. Some canvas, some on paper, some modern, some abstract.. Even native styles eg aboriginal point painting from Australia... But they fit together somehow.. And I love them all😊 Hope you do a part two.. This was fun and your energy and enthusiasm is contagious ☺️🤗

Sorry if someone else has already asked the following question. I have listed to several designers over time and many have talked about painting the ceiling a different color. What do you do if your ceiling is textured? Older homes have smooth ceiling but my home is 3yrs old and has a stippled ceilings.

I break all the rules! Always! Like mixing a high end couch with a weathered antique ammunition crate as a coffee table. When grandkids started coming and we needed more room around the dining table, we flipped the living room and dining room around and got a 10 foot table. I don't like defining a particular style, I just mix what I love and it all works.

If you are painting it all one color, do you use the same type of paint all over? And I totally agree with you. I’ve not broken the rules yet but I’m fixing to start running with scissors!
