5 DAYS IN A COMA & NOT EXPECTED TO LIVE......

A serious event which was related to my eating disorder put me in a coma for 5 days, and my family were told that I likely wouldn't live and if I did, I would be severely brain damaged. But here I am......I lived to tell my story.

Lauren, I, too, am crying right now, just a few months ago I was in the exact same position, waterloading 5l once a week, only I didn't fall into a coma. I knew that it was dangerous and it got to the point where I believed I was going to die that day, because the pain and brain-fog were so bad, but I could not tell my mother because I was afraid she would find out my real weight and send me to a hospital to receive inpatient treatment. I just cried in her arms all evening, hoping I would wake up the next day. Watching this really made me realise how lucky I am to still be around and I just want to give you a huge hug and say thank you for sharing your struggles. Because of you I no longer feel alone even with the darkest chapter of my life. We are going to fight through the rest of this terrible disorder together

I have to confess that I've only just seen this (I saw it in my YT feed when you first uploaded it but I personally find _any_ stories or footage of people in ICU for any reason triggering tbh)... I cannot tell you how sorry I am that you felt so cornered that you put yourself at risk of developing severe hyponanatraemia to remain an outpatient :'-( I don't want to sound patronizing or clichéd - but it's incredibly brave to share this experience with your audience, and I'm sure I don't have to tell you how lucky you are to have survived without chronic health problems as a direct result. I hope that anyone with an ED who sees this thinks twice before trying over drinking before a weigh-in and contemplates any of the possible consequences including coma, brain damage and/or a lifetime of dialysis 3x a week.

Glad you made it. I knew where this story was going as soon as you mentioned you read how much water weighed. I was in a coma for 2 days for a different reason and it was the most depressing thing because I didn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. I knew time was passing but there was nothing. Then I woke up intubated and tied up (because I had apparently been trying to pull things out) Take care. Marathoners also sometimes get hyponatremia from water intoxication from drinking just water. Don't skip those gatorade stations people!

You are important, you matter, thats why you are still here. You can help so many. I often encourage people who have been through horrible life experiences to look at the positives you received from those experiences, so that when you look back on them you no longer just see the horror or fear. You instead draw strength from those to better yourself and help others. Granted some dont understand what they are at first, so I have to help them find it.I would think with overcoming an eating disorder one might learn to "let go" knowing you can only control your eating up to a point then your body takes over. Maybe you learn its ok to be who you are and healthy. Maybe you learn you can help others in similar situations. I think you are incredible and I think you are so strong just by making this video.HUGS to you.

I don't have an eating disorder, but I am vegan and I like your sense of humor and your thoughts on veganism and the drama. However, I see you in a whole new light. I'm so glad you're alive with us. You are such a bright and funny and optimistic and cute Scottish girl. Please take care of yourself. And thanks for sharing this story. Don't know if I'll ever give you a hug in person, but either way, thank you. Love you lots!

You know what really scares me though is how crap the treatment in that hospital was though. I have a friend with an eating disorder and I keep telling her to get professional help (i am a psychotherapist myself) but i am afraid she ends up in one of those treatment centres that just focus on eating and not on all the other underlying issues and just work with this weigh and reward scheme... it's really scary and i very much fear for my friend... but she needs to do something... :(

I really hope your family will help you and monitor your eating and exercising habits. I suffered from anorexia nervosa for more than five years (from I was 11 until I was 16) and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't gain weight as a voice inside my head continued to deem me fat and ugly. With my parents' support, I gained loads of weight multiple times but lost it all over again due to the fact that I wasn't willing to let go of the voice (disorder) itself; I thought it meant that I would be losing control over my body and appearance and, thus, become chubby or fat. What finally started my recovery was to cognitively alter my ideal body image from stick-thin and muscular to muscular with a relatively low body fat percentage. As I enjoy and love strength training (squats, deadlifts, curls, running et cetera), it didn't take me long to realise how much better people look when they're muscular and healthy. :-) HOWEVER, becoming completely healthy is a conscious choice; whether you'd like to admit it or not, you still seem very unhealthy (and the fact that your "walking pace" is fast enough for you to almost be out of breath proves that you still haven't made the conscious choice. I decided one day that I didn't want this disorder to control my life any longer; I wasn't in control; the anorexia was literally controlling me constantly. From making that decision, I became 99% healthy about three months later. Now, if I eat more than I should, I don't beat myself up, cry endlessly, scream and exercise compulsively. Instead, I know that it isn't the end of the world if I overeat - I eat an incredible amount of food without gaining any fat - it isn't vegan or vegetarian but I might want to go plant-based or vegetarian at one point in my life. Now, I eat a diet that keeps me healthy, muscular, strong and relatively lean and my exercising has been reduced to two to three hours 3-4 days a week. AND I no longer suffer from anorexia nervosa. :)) I know that you probably won't let go of your eating disorder but living with your parents for some time (if you don't do that currently at least), might prove very helpful to you. Support is extremely important during recovery and if you get to a healthier weight, the amount of ED thoughts will reduce gradually - unless you religiously hold on to them, though, as I did for many years. YOU NEED to make the conscious choice of not listening to the fake voice inside your head; YOU NEED to let it go. Getting an ED is, of course, not a choice in itself, however, getting rid of the ED is a conscious choice that you need to make yourself with support from friends and family who are prepared to force you to eat regardless of how you might react. My ED made me a manipulative liar and an overall horrible person; I thought out tricks and ideas to trick my family constantly and was, for the most part, able to trick them into believing I had eaten my lunch at school, my dinner while they weren't home and that I was eating dinner with them when they where home... Don't let that horrible thing control you any longer. :((

I did consider fleeing from the hospital myself- i was laying there like Linda Blair in the Exorcist....the nurses had started talking to me like i was cognitively retarded. It is shocking to me that during IP and OP no one taught you guys about water-loading. Drinking excess water to pass weigh-ins is not uncommon and with a weakened system, a person would be more susceptible to complications. It's sad that you didn't have a better treatment program to go to. I'm glad you've found an eating regimen that is helping! :)

i had water intoxication due to a medication combined with a spicy meal and hiccups that wouldn’t quit. i remember getting sick to my stomach and being terribly confused- at work and given an instruction i could;t remember 30 seconds later. i was still seizing when the ambulance came, and i remember the headache days afterwards from the LP and the horrible muscle pain from the spasming. my mom was in a funeral when they called and asked her to come 300 miles asap cuz i might not make it.. do NOT mess with electrolytes. that seizure has haunted every potential medical prescription due to seizure threshold, and the coma and near brainstem herniation have thankfully at least taught me about harm reduction when i did get back into purging 6 months later.

Oh Lauren, what an horrific experience for you (an all who love you). Its actually hard to drink enough water to get water intoxication - as you discovered from how it made you vomit. If anyone is interested I chose water intoxication as the subject for one of my nutritionalist assignments. The human body can process a steady supply of around 800-900mls an hour (around 18-20litres) or a one off drink of a couple of litres (both assuming the person is healthy with no kidney problems and a healthy weight). I drink an awful lot of water,I used to drink very little but in my teens I had a few very nasty kidney infections one after another and was told to massively increase my water consumption. Until I became ill 5yrs ago and was doing a huge amount of exercise I would drink anything up to 8 litres a day, now its probably nearer 5 litres. You have my sympathy for the hayfever too! I have very, very severe brittle asthma and multiple allergies, including hayfever. As it invariably makes my asthma worse I don't only wear sunglasses even when its not especially sunny, but also often wear a mask over my nose and mouth! At first I felt extremely self conscious, but it makes so much difference to how I feel I try to keep my head high and carry on. Well done on your progress, stay strong. Lots and lots of love xxx

The Vegan Lass I can relate soo much to this, I started water loading after about a year and a bit inpatient, they said once I'd reached target and maintained for 3 weeks I could finally be discharged. I got into such a mess drinking litres of water before Being weighed, I got very sick but touch wood didn't fall into a coma. the lengths I would go to is ridiculous, even when they started locking my bathroom at night I would have as many extra drinks as I could before being weighed the next day. I'll never forget the agony of having a bladder about to burst but knowing going to the loo (supervised) could be the difference between discharge or even longer IP. I got to the point were I would pee in a cup and drink it so that I wouldn't lose any weight. it's crazy what I would do ironically I'm now gaining weight with very little push from anyone, it's taken a while but I've finally chosen recovery for myself

Just...wow. Well thats two MORE things we have in common, girl. 1. Reaction to high pollen in the air, complete with the lovliest swollen eyes & having to wear sunglasses, even on cloudy days... and 2. Because of behavior that was NOT 'normal' OR healthy, waking up in hospital and not remembering of how I'd ended up there. I know you've referred to having had an ED, but I never knew anything more than that. I am just so happy your mum sang that Oasis song to bring you back!!
