I love how the intro song for this video has bass loud because in a band setting with a bass I like to get a heavier sound by adding more volume with a bass (not too much that you can't hear other instruments) instead of turning up bass eq in a guitar tone. I love how some modern Metal bands have more bass guitar volume in a mix than some other Metal bands. Of course double tracking guitars or bass guitars can make guitars sound more huge. I also don't care weather a bass is distorted in a metal mix or not as long as I like what is being played and the tone.

I bought a bass last year. After doing it MIDI for years its such a pain to get a great bass tone lol. I find myself putting so much time into bass. But when i nail it. Its amazing to hear it lock step with the kick.

on one hand, i'll use an ampeg style amp as the main tone with added distortion track, on the other hand, i'll split into two to three tracks (the low, the grit, and the clank), but most of the times i'll only split the lows and the highs, i think it was based on Darkglass or something.

Sounds awesome and I do stuff like that however, you can also achieve this with Neural DSP or Aurora DSP Mammoth as well.

I do all 5, but I use preamps emulations from slate (like it was captured on a mic and tape plugin (like it’s bounced to tape and back to mix)

Dude, I was literally just asking Ben today about what this piece of music is that plays before all your videos, and was surprised to learn that to the best of his recollection, it was just a short piece you wrote as a video intro piece. Man, that riff is so killer...I would seriously love to hear this fleshed out into a full-fledged song!

Loved the video. I was wondering for a while about your intro bass sound. It sounds huge! :) Could you recommend some nice plugins that would do the same but are not the stock plugins in your DAW? It would be nice for people that don't use your DAW :)

Hi Bobby. Once again another great video! LOVE IT! I have 2 questions. One. The EQ that goes before the AMP SIM on the duplicated track, did you actually use it? If so, could you share them? Second. The EQ used on the summing track shows a photo of the EQ with settings but, your picture blocks out the HF ones. Could you share those settings? Thanks again!

That DI sounds great to start with. I’m using an Ibanez SR300, even with new strings it sounds really flat with no clarity. Recorded straight into a focusrite with correct input settings. Help? Lol

When you record guitar or bass strait into your interface do you use the hi-z switch? I have a mackie onyx and it has a line level switch. It says to engage it when direct instruments cuz ot acts like a di box... But I havent seen a difference in signal when using the switch

I use the hi-z to ensure that the impedance is matched.

What kind of pick are you typically using? I find, especially for bass, the thickness and hardness really affect the tone.

Yeah, but that DI isn't any raw performance either. That's most definitely recorded either one note at a time or at a slower tempo, then edited tight as fuck.

@@mikkohirvela309 You are correct. All of the dead space is cut out to make it sound super tight and heavy, not one note at a time though (although, I'll do that if I have to).

Does the sans amp come with a IR? or do u use your IR?

Yo Bobby, loving your heavy mixing unlocked course so far (still at drums). I got a question on bass mixing. I own two great bass plugins which both can dial in the crunch to a certain frequency range. Would you say it could in that case work by just having one bass di track or would you still run two separate bass tracks and treat them like in this very video?

Remember when Yamaha put out that sub capture thing .... Have you ever used one? I work at a place that sees alot of broken stuff... Took an 8 out of am m-audio monitor. Shock mounted it inside like a 10 tom... Put mesh heads on it... Drill a hole put a jack... It worked okay... How do feel in regards to these freqs being part of the infra sound junk. Or do you think it might add a thump if mixed it right.. beneficial or hype? That type of product. I notice they don't really make it anymore... Yamaha...

Is the bass string change thing based on consistent use? Sometimes I play 2 times a week and sometimes I play lime once a month...

It depends on the player. If the strings sound dead, I change them. I've sometimes had to do it once a week with certain bands while tracking full-length albums.

If you are playing gigs, you can get away with changing them every couple months/or every month depending how much you play. With recording, it's always a good idea to track with brand new/fresh strings.....Also, try and track all of your bass parts within a few days so that way you don't have to change your strings more then once. If you track say half an album one day on bass, and then wait a couple weeks to track the second half then I would change out the strings again to a fresh pair for consistency of attack and tone (unless the bass sat in a case for that couple week period unplayed). Example: On one album I tracked half the bass tracks in one day, and I waited 2 weeks to record the second half while practicing the parts on my bass outside of recording time. When I went in and tracked the second half and referenced the tones from the first week, there was a noticeable loss in attack/punchiness....This forced me to restring the bass and retrack the second half with fresh strings. It wasted an extra day or so of time. Time is money in regards to running or recording in a studio, so being super anal about fresh strings can only help in the long run imo.

Bro. I sold those Sm-81s I picked up at the thrift store... Never used them.... Don't record anything really... Except a personal project every now and then. Basically those and a beta 91... Got me a bitchen big hollow body rock-a-billy Gretsch guitar.. I have no idea what I'm doing.... When in doubt, I whip it out. Got me a rock n roll band...it's a free for all...

I have nothing to add, but the algorithm likes comments so I offer this sentence as tribute to the divine AI overlord.

100 hz cut your guitars here, 60 hz cut your bass guitar here, rest is bass drum, maybe a boost in the 40 hz area, roughly, solo guitars, cut around 150-200 hz. And get a good bass tone out of the box, no distortion what so ever, and forget that klang, bass is a bass, not a piano. You want that klang, you gonna sound like anyone else nowadays. And the three track bass gimmick is just a gimmick, you can drive a bass without sounding like a bees nest, learn your gear and train your ear, there is no easy way out. Most people dont listen to music with studio equipment but with earphones, television or shitty speakers out of wallmart. They don't produce sub-bass sounds anyway, if you dont have a solid mid mix, you sound like shit anyways. Never cut, if you dont hear anything that sounds bad, boost wide where you hear your preferred tone. And if you cut, cut as narrowly as you can, i mean needle thin. Thats my take on bass tone, worked so far for me, learn your gear and train your ear.
