I'm a 70 YO, recreational drummer. Retired now and play drums about 1 hour a day to MY MUSIC : CCR, Clapton, Stones, Mellencamp, M. Etheridge, Crow, Cars, Talking Heads, Beatles, Winwood, Eagles, Journey, even Linda Ronstadt & Bonnie Rait (these Ladies are great ), and more. I resurrected my playing after 50 YEARS (1969), and I am mostly self-taught [ maybe 6-8 lessons in 1966]. Eric cites some great review techniques to pursue for improvement. Two things I would volunteer: Try using your weak hand (left for me), for more thingsthan you are used to...brushing your teeth, holding your coffee cup, etc. & get a hand gripper and a Finger gripper and use them for 3 or more sets of 10-15 everyday to strengthen both hands, but more predominantly on the weaker hand. Muscle memory is hard to break and redevelop. Actually, doring this is part of neuroplasticity - works on the Brain !! Happy Drumming All. Who knows ....maybe a Geriatric Band or Jamming Elders will present itself for me locally...

Thanks for making this! It's something we all needed to hear. As a self-taught "gifted" drummer I especially needed this. The very first time I picked up a pair of sticks and sat behind a set, I just started playing along to one of my favorite records - that was about 40 years ago, and never had a lesson since. You inspired me to actually take some lessons, and try a more structured, purposeful effort to my drumming.

Self-taught for 7 years now and yeah, definetly guilty of some of these. Thanks to videos like these I've noticed I'm almost always leaning forward quite agressively and tensing up way too much when playing. Eats up stamina like crazy playing this way, so I'll work on that from now on, thanks.

I asked rod morgenstein to play a paradiddle at a clinic and he said he never got into paradiddles. It's good to know the basic paradiddle but a double and triple Is just overkill. Single strokes, double strokes, basic paradiddle and triplets will get you the gig

I would respectfully disagree! They may not be useful in a groove, but they are very useful in pushing you to have better hands. They are definitely worth practicing my friend!

Thanks Eric! 30 years of self taught drumming…over the past 2 years I went back and dug into rudiments to fix these gaps, and my playing has exploded (and listening comprehension of drum solos from the greats has also gone way up). Alternating L and R hand rudiment starts, as you mention early on in this vid, has been the most helpful. Thanks for all of your guidance and stay safe out there everyone.

I'm more by ear than reeding notation because it's harder to read drum parts on a music sheet. I can do it a bit because I was in drum line for 2 years but I prefer hearing the part and feeling where the notes go instead of counting because when I count I get lost worrying about the numbers in my head and I lose focus on the part I'm playing. I can keep in time doing my own thing which is like a combination of counting and feeling where the notes go.

Some people are born with a gift of rhythm and can automatically feel every beat. After 10 years playing, and thinking I was a great drummer, I took one lesson. I brought a couple Yes albums to the lesson because I wanted this guy to teach me how to play like Bill Bruford. Needless to say, I was very disappointed because he started me at the beginning, single stroke, double stroke and paradiddle. I wasn’t familiar with the sticking for playing the paradiddle, but I told the guy “that’s a simple beat, I can already do that…” unaware there was specific sticking for it. I never went back, but I did start practicing the single and double strokes as I discovered how much tighter my drumming was when I did. Two years later, I was invited to be the host drummer at an open jam night at a jazz club. I had played with the bass player who invited me, so didn’t give it a second thought, assuming we would be playing similar music we had played in the past. Ha… I’m sure he was embarrassed as I was playing straight rock groves as they were playing free form jazz grooves. The first guy to sit in on the drums was perfect. I was familiar with the guy but in my youthful arrogance, wasn’t impressed with his drumming before because he was in a band that played popular songs from the radio. Needless to say, I was embarrassed and even a bit pissed that this guy was better than me. The following day, I visited my favorite music store and purchased the WF Ludwig book on jazz. I was 20 years old, but started learning rudiments for the first time. Though,b when I was 10, I was in the school band and the instructor just played the same songs every year, not teaching drummers anything. The following year, the school system changed and I was attending a different school with a different music instructor. Also in my class were two brothers who had just moved from Las Vegas. They were tight and could read! Up until then, I didn’t know there was drum sheet music. I was the more popular drummer of the 3 of us because I could sit down with my 12 year old contemporaries and play any song they could play, while the two brothers needed sheet music to play with a band. For the next 8 years I was full of self delusion, believing I was a great drummer because I continued to improve and play more intricate rhythms I taught myself by listening. Then at age 20, my drumming improved, but I was still ignorant of the many amazing things I could play if I had mastered the rudiments. But I didn’t stop at 3 rudiments. I purchased more books and practiced more. I became an accomplished drummer, but not quite a musician. It wasn’t until famous drummers started posting videos on the internet that I realized some of the most intricate progressive drum grooves were actually rudiments! My idol, Bill Bruford was playing a 5 stroke roll in parts of “heart of the sunrise” that I assumed was a uniquely, complicated groove. Practicing rudiments can be boring, but there is nothing better to improve. I can read well enough to learn an entire song, but I have to memorize as I have never made sight reading a priority. I’m 66 and have been playing for 56 years, though I first started on a toy snare at age 5. I prefer to feel the music rather than play what somebody else has written for the song. The downside is I’ve been turned down many opportunities to record because I don’t read.

I'm guilty of the first and second ones. started playing drums by myself at 16... I'm 43 now, and I've hit a skill wall where I want to sound a certain way and I just can't. I've tried pad practicing, but I fizz out of that rather quickly. I also can't seem to play to a click reliably. Lack of guidance and practice. On the other hand, I do warm-up before stagetime, so I don't feel as rigid, where I can just flow better in time. Sometimes I play louder than necessary, then I adapt.

Great video. One thing where playing loud ghost notes make sense is if you are playing Rage Against the Machine type of songs. Brad Wilk uses them all the time. But since they are really loud, I guess they aren't "ghost" notes anymore and are just heavily accented notes at that point.

I agree with this video 100% as a self taught drummer for 11 years there is more room to grow I started reading this year and finally got a teacher so much to get better at. Rudiments being memorized, being able to read, vocabulary is huge and even BEYOND the rudiments. All drummers should practice playing to a track all the time!!! Most of the time we don't play chops anyway.

Well shit, I've been jamming around for 6 months now and never once have I tried to play a rudiments. I'm only 2 minutes into this videos too. I know I know, I really should work on sticking and rudiments but I have this thing about getting a fast foot first. And no, not double pedal lol. With that being said I'm in my 40's and I'm just doing this for fun. But yes, play along to a metronome. As a newb I wish I would've done that from day 1. Thank you
