I think Gregorian chant, incense, and veiling actually might draw more young people back to mass. They are conduits of the beautiful spirituality people crave in this disconnected corporate world. Holding hands during the our father not so much.

Well some people might not be drawn to the incense part if they have allergies or asthma but I agree with the other things. The thing that got me to start going to Latin mass was frustration with the Covid protocols like masks required, communion in the hand being required, unless you wanted to go last, the restored communion rail wasn’t being used And the priest initially stood behind plexiglass like he was afraid we had the plague or leprosy!!! What now draws me to the Latin mass which I’ve been going to for almost 2 full years is communion on the tongue only, everyone dresses in their Sunday best for the most part, silence (because I go to the low mass) and overall reverence. And also really good homily from either the priest or doing the academic year we might have a transitional deacon And he might be the one giving the homily (Transitional means he’s going to be ordained a priest within like six or so months)

At least two Novus Ordo churches in my diocese here in Phoenix, Arizona, have brought back altar rails and/or kneelers to receive communion!

Having grown up through V2 and the changes thereafter i can remember only very few women of any age wearing a veil. In the Cathedral in Dunedin NZ wonen wore hats. Agree with Amber on pretty well all she says but to me veils are simply not important.

I attend a very reverent NO and there are many of us who veil. We also have included Gregorian chant into our Mass for the Sanctus, Mysterium Fidei, and Agnus Dei. I wish we’d bring back rails mainly because I physically cannot kneel and get back up without one so I have to receive standing, although I do receive on the tongue. I am all for these traditions being brought back because I firmly believe they should have never left. I’m a convert from Protestantism and have zero desire to return to a “slappy, clappy self serving” service.

I wear a veil at novus ordo mass! There are only two other people who veil at the church I go to, but I absolutely love veiling!!

The assistant pastor at my church does Gregorian chants during holy hours every Thursday and he is also studying the latin Mass and is trying to bring it back :)

I am starting RCIA soon with a local priest and I am so glad to see they do the kneeling and communion on-the-tongue and some women and girls were veiled. They do TLM there too once a week. I’ve heard it said that women are veiled because they are sacred. That’s beautiful not repressive!

Hi there, I'm also a Catholic! And a member of my church choir. About Gregorian Chant, sadly the only Gregorian Chant we sing is during Lent (Tantum Ergo Sacramentum). The rest of the liturgical year is a 4 hymn sandwich (the parish committee will chose the hymns we sing rather than the choir choosing). The organist (or should I say keyboard player) usually accompanies the hymn singing with upbeat tempo music rather than an organ setting. Now usually at Holy Week, this is where it gets very reverent. No upbeat tempo, 1 Gregorian Chant piece and music is all acapella. The rest of the liturgical year is like a normal NO mass. Through St Cecilia's intercession, I truly hope God will mould our church's music into a sacred stronghold of heavenly music. God bless you always!

My husband and I, for “Catholic New Year” (Saturday evening before the first Sunday of Advent) decided our Catholic New Year’s resolution would be to abstain from meet on all Fridays of the year, not just during Lent.

We have kneelers but people can receive standing or kneeling. I choose kneeling, because I want to show Jesus the reverence He deserves. We do hear Gregorian chanting at Easter and periodically through the year. I just started veiling. I wear a at mass and during prayer. Because I want to humble myself in the presence of God.

In New Zealand, I have seen more Anglican (Episcopalian) churches with altar rails than Catholic churches.

Yes! In some churches in Mexico & at a church i visted in Rome there were alter rails & i didn't know their importance! Thanks :)

& Yess as i get further into ur video.. I agree Gregorian chants definitely " Set the mood" for a good intimate prayer. I actually experienced Jesus' essence for the first time at a Church retreat during Holy hour infront of the Blessed Sacrament. They had gregorian chants playing in the back & it was then that I was able to allow myself to be drawn into a state of peace & serenity, and thats when Jesus started talking to me:))

i definitely agree with the alter rails but, (in a respectful manner) don’t agree with veils being required because if covering our hair is supposed to be a form of sacrifice i feel like requiring it kinda takes away the specialness of each woman coming to terms with the holy spirit when deciding to cover her hair

One more thing to add! T g e church I go to and 2 others that are morden day Catholic Church are about to come together as one sometime this year! I know that we will end up in modern-day Catholic Church at the largest church! The women don't wear vails, and most people before going into the pew don't knee, and don't ring the chimes! The church I go to is the oldest church on the West Coast. And it the only one with the Traditional Catholic Church (it used to be the church to have Latin mass)! One thing I forgot to mention is that we at The Proto-cathedral of St. James the Greater signed a petition to get this beautiful traditional church! We should be hearing from them soon to find out if we can save this beautiful old and first in northwest! Otherwise, we will leave to a morden church! My TLM parish has altar rails (it’s a hybrid of celebrating TLM and NO) but my NO parish doesn’t 🤨.And also your take on veiling was the best I’ve ever heard!!!

The Roman Catholic Daily Missal 1962 reprint from Angelus Press is an excellent resource for pre-vatican II traditions. This is the only Roman Catholic Daily Missal that I personally use. The Daily Missal is spendy, but worth more than the amount you pay.

The church I attend in Wisconsin it’s a very nice and reverent church but they didn’t have any nice artwork on the wall or things like that, but God blessed us and our parish we’re getting a marble altar rail statues New floor new stenciling yes Amber we would love to have you at our church! I grew up refraining from meat on Fridays and I am very happy with my parents for requiring this. Also my brother thinks that Latin mass should be the only mass and started going to Latin mass every week. Also I've been trying to getting into veilling but I just never started.

The girls in veils are beautiful! The women at Our Lady of Mt Carmel TLM always wear them ✝️♥️

To me a woman hating veiling is like a guy hating to wear a suit, just kind of comes off as immature. Veiling is so beautiful! I wish to see it become more common in the Catholic Church.

Amber, I completely agree with you, bring back all the traditions! Unfortunately most Catholics (including some clergy) in the US have become lukewarm over the decades and making any changes that require more effort from anyone at the Mass is probably going to be fought hard against. I’ve seen a lot of older churches that still have their communion rails but they don’t use them and the people are forced to receive standing. We desperately need a revival in the Church! At the risk of sounding negative I’m not optimistic considering Catholics like us are the minority.

Totally agree on all accounts,,, especially regarding the vale. I am a conservative catholic and I miss all the old traditions of the church which are gradually disappearing into the history books ( in western cultures ). I think we should all act and support these beautiful traditions and bring them back , and if we dont they will be lost forever because of apathy, and the current liberal climate and mindset we live in today. After spending extensive time in Eastern Europe where a lot of these traditions are still firmly in place, ( Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine etc ) I found it so uplifting , inspiring and a sanctuary away from a world that is full of chaos and insanity.

Hi Amber, I disagree on veiling as a requirement. First of all I would like to say that I agree on all the reasons you mention and I would be the happiest person alive if all women would veil. But here comes the point I don't think is logic: making it a requirement. Because way too many women would make this without love for our Lord. They would only do it because they must. And I personally believe that actions without love and deep awareness of what you are doing, of what your action means, have no worth in front of God! So let's pray for women who aren't still veiling, so that they will change by love and not by requirements! What do you think about that? Please let me know! P. The previous pastor at my novus ordo church brought back altar rails and placed the tabernacle in the middle, and when public masses happen we do ad orientum regularly (usually fridays and saturdays). In recent years I've started abstaining from meat on fridays throughout the year (except feasts). I love the act of veiling but as a sacramental I think it should remain optional... it means more when you do something freely rather than by compulsion. I really love the points you presented and it is definitely possible to make it a requirement, but we would have to do a whole lot of catechesis on the Eucharist and pray peoples' hearts change. And I'm all for getting rid of cringe modern music during mass, bring back those chants! To add to your points, communion in the hands should not (and never have been) allowed. We need re-catechesis so badly

I like to fast from social media on Fridays throughout the year! I grew up doing the meatless Fridays and though I appreciate the tradition, I found it more beneficial to offer something that serves to distract me from Christian duty. Sometimes I offer up KZread or some other common entertainment as the minor inconvenience when I start to log in gives me a reason to raise my thoughts to God throughout the day instead of just seeking another distraction from what's really important! :)

The altar rails at my parish have cushions for people to kneel down on while receiving the Eucharist. The Eucharistic Ministers stand behind, so we’re not kneeling on the tile.

Back in the old days, there was a concern for drawing attention to oneself. It was considered a mark of pride and arrogance. There was also a deep respect for pastors. One obeyed the indications of the pastor, even if personally one wasn't in agreement.

I didn't know that fasting on all Fridays was not obligatory. Where I live(in Poland) it's common that you must fast on Fridays(or it's untold).

Personally I think there is a way we can come to a synthesis between Novus Ordo and Latin masses. There is a long list of traditions that were discarded needlessly and discouraged by one generation. All of them are incredibly beneficial to faith and spirituality. I played guitar and piano with a Novus ordo choir, I was an altar server for many years and I am a lector with my parish. There was major issues with the music but in general the contemporary music has been fixed immensely in the recent decade. That being said I really would like to see far more effort to have the choir be less of a sing along and more of a thematic improvement to mass in general. I really feel there are positive benefits to some of Novus ordo changes. However I also attended a tridentine mass for years in Toronto and I can see the great beauty of traditional catholicism and how much was missed in my catechism. I really pray we can find a way to bring back all traditions you mention while also not immediately throwing out Novus ordo changes that are beneficial.

The SSPX Church that I attend has all of that plus a dress code for men and women

The Eastern Rite liturgical services use their own chants by and large. Gregorian was mostly just in the West/Latins.

How do you fast for instance what practically does fasting involve?

When we went to Mass in the 50s and 60s, women covered their heads, but not with veils, except for certain immigrant groups. Women wore fashionable hats, and looked very smart. One of the traditions you don't mention is making a visit to the Blessed Sacrament. Many women kept a doily in their purse so that, if they were downtown and wanted to make a visit but weren't wearing a hat, they could cover their heads with the doily affixed with a bobby pin. But veils? They weren't part of Catholic life. Check photos of people leaving church in the 30s---60s. But if you lived in an Italian or Hispanic neighborhood, then the older women probably did wear veils. The term "veiling" is modern.

I heard it said that the veiling requirement after Vatican 2 wasn't changed or dismissed, that it really was just "ignored" and not enforced. Also another tradition I am trying to uphold is the saying of the Angelus 3 times a day, Morning, Noon & evening.

I was actually fasting on Sundays would that work

I don't agree with all your statements. I do agree that showing true reverence in Church is important. In the AOD nearly all parishes ask those receiving communion to bow reverently after saying Amen, and to consume the host immediately and not walk away with the host in hand. Sacred music is beautiful and meditative. Gregorian chant is sung in some novus ordo Churches. Finding people who can sing these chants with acceptable quality is difficult. My wife agrees, wearing veils optionally is another means of showing greater reverence. I find your enthusiasm for our Catholic Faith refreshing and hopeful I do hope you seek to learn more officialy about our faith. God Bless you and have a fulfilling Lent.

Vatican II implied major liturgical downgrades-so sad. They also need to ditch the three year lectionary and go back to the historic one year lectionary, no more altar girls, lay reader, or laity distributing the blessed sacrament, etc.

As Maronites (Catholics in Lebanon) our traditions differ, but obviously in a good way. So we do have Amber days and we actually abstain and fast every Wednesday and Friday of the year from Meat. Communion Patens are mandatory, and this is why communion by hand was not a very big problem during COVID as the altar person would make sure every person get their communion in front of the altar and do not walk with the Eucharist. Veiling is not required but many do so and we are also not required to neal throughout the entire mass (I personally do) though obviously respect is mandatory. Everyday mass always has Lebanese 'Gregorian Chants', so chants that were written over thousands of years, but the Sunday mass usually has a choir that has more modern music (though they are not secular at all). This is because the church I attend is for the youth, and inviting someone over to Church and pointing out the great music and choir, have always been a starting point to the conversion of others. Other than that, I am yet not sure about Veiling as I do not want to attract attention to myself at all during mass. I just want to be a person that no one notices so that they focus all on Christ. Let me start by saying that i don't really disagree with any of the points but being a more liberal catholic with a huge interest in history i have to disagree with a few things. I hope my criticism isn't too harsh and that everything i'm trying to say is understandable (english is not my first language) Fasting on fridays: I'm all for fasting no matter which day and i'm all for doing a penance on friday. However, i don't think that the no-meat on friday rule still makes sense in 2021. It was introduced to stop the (rich) people from feasting on the day our lord suffered. It was mostly just a rule for the elites, the peasants couldn't afford meat daily to begin with. Fish was allowed because it was seen as more of a poor mans food. Nowadays i'd say a cheap hotdog is more penitential than a fancy lobster diner. Plus giving up meat on a friday mighte be a huge thing for a person and barely noticeable for another. I think it's much more in keeping with the original idea to let people choose what they do on friday. I don't really see a benefit in going with the no-meat option in 2021 just because our ancestors did it like this for a few hundred years. They at one point broke with tradition to introduce the rule as it is now. Altar rails: Great for the EF mass but completely against the idea for the OF mass. A great deal of thought went into the OF and there are (often) good reasons for why things are the way they are. In the OF we process down to the altar and recieve at the foot of the altar. Waiting in a spot on the altar rails doesn't fit in. It is actually not good that in many OF parishes communion is offered in the middle or the back of the church. Standing while receiving communion had to do with the risen Jesus. We receive the risen Christ and thus we as baptized have the right to stand in front of God Himself. Veiling Honestly i wouldn't mind it, TBH i'd even like to try it out one day. Veiling is actually a funny thing. Lace mantillas were never a part of my culture, women either wore hats, scarves or nothing. Nowadays when you go to a EF mass you can see some younger women wearing lace veils because it is traditional. Older women never wear veils. There are like 2 older women at my local EF parish that wear a headcovering and both are migrants. I just find it odd to do something in the name of tradition that never was a tradition. Headcovering yes, lace mantillas no. If the women at the EF parish wanted to really dress traditional they would have to look like a costume party. I think this is a nice example of how i think tradition should be treated. I don't think it's a good idea to reintroduce something because it was popular in a certain time period. We should rather look why something was popular, what were the ideas behind it? Take the good and leave the bad. If we were to say that headcoverings are a good thing than why not go for modern mantillas instead of traditional bonnets or scarves. The same way if we say fasting on a friday is a good thing than why not give up coffee instead of meat. Everything we know see as traditional was once new. There were even popes who were critical of "gregorian" chant (before it was called that of course). Believe it or not it was the once inappropriately fast hip music of the day, totally unsuitable for worship. Maybe as a last word give the OF a chance, study the theology behind the changes and many things start to make a loooot more sense. I always thought the changes were just done out of a spirit of destruction but in fact incredible amounts of effort, wisdom and intelligence went into the liturgical reforms. Deo Gratias

Amen. And, Christ himself distributed Communion in the hand to the pre-Pentacost Apostles (i.e. just as grubby as us). This was also the practice of the early Church. Works for me.

I can’t do #4 as I’m a man. However, I am trying to go to the Extraordinary Form of the Mass more often and the women and girls veil their heads.

One that in the morden church have take away is chimes where the priest bless the body then the blood of Christ! I to a Traditional Catholic church! But 2 other Catholic churches are very morden and don't do much in traditional Catholic teachings! Which to me doesn't have the same meaning! I found myself ungrateful and very bored. Thank God I only go there when my mother and wake late or when she is nor in good health to drive in the morning, so we end up going to morden day church in the evening!

So true, if you can't veil for an our at mass you should find a modern lose religion...Orthodox veils, Islam veils, many Hindu veils, it is the original thing to do if you wonna practice traditional
