Climbing, pole or runner beans are amazingly prolific crops and they are attractive too, providing vertical interest in the vegetable garden.
However, they need sturdy supports and, depending on your garden, you'll want to support them in very different ways.
In this video Ben shows 5 different ways of creating supports for climbing beans so you can pick the best system for maximum harvests.

To support my beans I like to tell them how proud of them I am, and how well they're doing. I tell them that I've always got their back no matter what happens.

I've looked into this method since seeing this method on a few KZreadr's videos in US and Oz. They don't really seem to be available here in the UK. Miss my days in TN (Murfreesboro)!
So many ideas from this one video. I'm so excited about the potential of my little garden
Oooh - I think the bean tunnel is brilliant. I can imagine it being wide enough and high enough to place one’s patio table and chairs inside, providing cool shade as well as yummy legumes!

Could use a portable gazebo frame to provide the basis for this incredible idea! I'm going to defiantly do something like this as I'm sun intolerant, and that would provide an amazing and beautiful spot to hang out, and do some late summer gardening things!

I tried the tunnel one year. Loved it. So fresh underneath it.
I screenshotted that arch in the last video and sent it excitedly to my fiance. He is a fencer so rylock (what that wire is called) is abundant and small bits are regularly left over. With your idea, a pea arch is in progress! 🎉

I like all of them! They add interest into the garden as well as support for productive crops. I'm trying to work out a way of building something to get the beans to climb up and hang down for easy harvest whilst utilising an awkward slope.
GREAT video, enjoyed the many options and was happy some were low cost and not store bought stuff. Gave me ideas on what to do without having to watch any more videos. 5 Stars if I could

I love making teepees first year for growing runner beans & also one for tomatoes. I've used scourers around the base of the plants to protect from the incessant snails & slug attacks this year. I am going to try growing french dwarf beans up a trellis already attached to a wall. Thanks to this video I remembered I have this already set up!
Thank you for your detailed instructions. Just built my first teepees. Your video was the 5th one I viewed, and the only one that showed the process from the very start.

Very helpful video, Ben. Thank you for sharing these great ideas. Jan :-)
Really like the string climbing the wigwam to help the beans on their journey. I do this with the Clematis but hadn't thought about it for the beans :-)
Thank you, growing beans for the first time this year, I will have a go at the tipi support! 👍
I'm fond of the simple teepee, but the arch idea is fabulous! I'd definitely try it if growing more beans.

A Frame With a trench either side to catch buckets of water Runner beans love water so i make the trench to hold water. They also love rain as it makes the flowers set. If it’s really hot and dry use a water mister spray in the evening on the flowers to help pods set

Thanks for that. Check out our other videos on growing in raised beds and container growing. The advantage to growing in raised beds is that taking care of plants is easier and the soil tends to warm up/drain through quicker in spring.
Just in time! Thank you 💚
Brilliant ideas. I grew runner beans for the first time last year and they grew up some mesh really high.. about 8ft and was really bushy, and what I really liked, as well as the harvest, was it became a home to and attracted masses of insects.🐝🐝🌻

I scored a huge armload of 12-15' bamboo cut by a neighbor from their yard, I now have an enormous tee-pee (or wigwam) that's lasted 5 years so far, one that I use for my pie pumpkins - they grow much more round hanging and don't develop soft spots like can happen when they sit on wet ground. Ben is the happiest person on the internet - whenever I need some sunshine in my life there's always GroVeg to cheer me up.

The small Christmas tree I tried to save died, when I planted it. My Neighbour opted to use it as a center pole for a teepee. Which I will do and plant morning glories. This way, the poor little tree will bear beauty for several years to come, not only last holiday season^^

If I can grow those beans, or ideally a perennial flowering vine that grows in hot long afternoon sun, I could plant them in a large container (on the patio in front of the window) to shade it! Also what a wonderful way to share food with neighbors by growing easy growing high yield vegetables. I’m really looking forward to getting things set up.

Nice looking garden 👌
Hi Ben... There was no end to green bean growth this year in our small Meridian ID backyard garden... somewhat the same size as shown in your bean support video. Just enough space for a couple of large tomato plants, several cukes, a couple of peppers, green onions and carrots, and of course the beans! With difficulties locating all the beans through its tall thickness, I had to search for a solution... and there you were! So impressed with the post and wire mesh cage system, and I knew right away that is what we needed, being able to walk through it to pick! Having just finished up removal of the tired plants, I am excited to soon install your system!! Thanks so much! :)

well done! I'll be using the teepee style or the long bamboo pole trellis, as we are windy here in Arizona and it may hold up. Thank you

I made mine from old aluminium window frame taking out the glass (if there was any in them) and drilling holes around the edges threading wire through. They make great trellising and are light but strong enough to put on a wall or wherever you want them. I was able to watch this video thanks to the feature that allows us to adjust the speed. My brain needs the material to be presented faster to stay engaged, so with 1.75 X speed plus captions, I was able to stay attentive to the entire video. I'm intrigued by the archway because I have oodles of scrap fence that I could utilize. I think I'm going to see if 4 bamboo poles and cable ties could support the fence and beans over a 1.2 meter-wide bed. In fact... I'm going to go do that right 😁now.
Good show , you were a Boy Scout , you know how to tie a tpee wrap , cheers Ben .
