Did you know Vibram didn't even *want* to make the Five Fingers? They only wanted to be a manufacturer of out-soles for other footwear companies and they ended up producing the Five Fingers line essentially as a favor to a buddy.

Merrell's Vapor line used to be better when they had a wide toe-box. The Vapor 4 was the last to have that, they went narrower with the 5 and on. No idea why, but they don't have a wide toe-box any longer.

After thinking it over for quite some time and based on my personal experience, I find the Vibram KSO Evo to be the shoe which resembles being barefoot the most. Of course I also own 3 Vivobarefoot models namely Primus Lite 3, Lite Knit, and the Magna. And also, a pair of Xero sandals. I also happen to own a pair of Japanese Tabi running shoes which have really great ground feel as well. Don’t get me wrong, IMO they are ALL awesome! The Vibrams narrowly edge out the others when it comes to upper flexibility, sole flexibility and toe splay. When it comes to closeness to the ground, the Vivo primus lites with insoles removed win by a hair. With that being said, I remember commenting on your most hated barefoot shoes video regarding the VFF’s. I would still never wear them for first dates or meeting up with girls for the first time !

Funny how my feet have already adjusted themselves to wider shoes and when I wear 'other' ones, I can really feel the difference in widths. #vivobarefoot (Primus Knit Trail and the Magna Forest ESC ) is probably going to be my lifetime barefoot shoes I'll stay with.

My 5 favorite barefoot shoes: 5> VFF V-Run: a joy to run with on road (I don't like so much trail VVF because I always get lots of things stuck between toes); Following 4 are Vivobarefoot: 4> old Modus model (with the velcro): just a little more stiff than usual and that makes them ideal for bike riding; 3> Magna trail: can be easyly worn on trail and in city; 2> Primus trail FG: my do-everything shoe (and the All Weather versions are great for bike riding when there are light showers (but they are not thoroughly waterproof)) ; 1> Gobi: my go-to shoes when a sportive look is not really welcome (mainly at work). Several years ago, I used to wear Merrell and switched to barefoot shoes without real intention about that; but these shoes became too narrow at mid-foot and their arch support became too prominent. And then I've discovered VVF and Vivobarefoot brands...

This is the first video I've watched on your channel. Kudo's, I'll probably buy one of the shoes you reviewed. I cracked up about the Vibram comments. I was wearing my five-fingers last night in Home Depot and literally a small crowd gathered, some laughing, some questioning (kid you not). The one thing I think Vibram has - as silly as they look - over the others, is the hard separation of toes for bunion-sufferers like myself. And I have seen some shoes that are sort of a hybrid of Vibrams and more traditional-looking footwear- I don't know if you've done a video on those. But I am in fact looking for a less-ridiculous looking barefoot shoe so, thank you!

I got some Five Fingers early on that were a teeny bit on the small side, and also have had all the Merrell Trail Gloves since the original model - we're now on TG6. At the time I wasn't ready for Five Fingers with the individual pressures on each toe, but the Trail Gloves were perfect as they spread the load across the whole forefoot. Anyway, the Trail Gloves got better with TG2 and TG3, then lost the plot with TG4. TG5 better than 4 but still not as good as 3, and now with TG6 they are good but still not as good as TG3. For me the problem with the Trail Glove is durability. They are exceptionally comfortable, but they just don't last. TG3s were far more durable, in fact I still have and use mine regularly. Now, I've ordered a pair of Primus Trail FGs and we'll see how that goes.

Great video. Concise. I like that. One question. I read occasionally the Vivo are not the widest shoe out there. Wider toe box than a Nike Air or whatever but there are wider options. Would you agree? For context, I wear a US M 15. I tried Xero Prio. They fit but a bit tight through the toe box. Same with Lems Chillum. Lems Primal Zens are a much better fit, though I wish I could find something with that overall size and shape with a lower overall stack height. Wearing a 15 (and near the top of that range at that) my options are limited. Only a few minimalist shoes even off a 15/50. VFF does and they fit great but I agree with the knocks you have on them as well. The Vivo Primus lites keep popping up in my mind but then those comments about width push them back down, haha.

  • @TheBarefootStrengthProject

    @TheBarefootStrengthProject

    10 ай бұрын

Thank you. I think that depends on the shape of your foot and preferences. I find them a perfect width as I do a lot of performance based training (hiking, trail running, crossfit, weightlifting etc) and I like to know exactly where my foot is and exactly where it's going without any 'fluff'. As you say, wearing a US M 15 leaves you pretty limited in the options department so my recommendation would be order them up and find out for yourself - I love them so hopefully they work out for you! I'm not sure where you're based but if you missed my '3D printed shoes' video, you should check out the VivoBiome program. They're looking for volunteers to test out their new biometrically scanned and 3d printed footwear program, if you could get on that you'd be well set!

I’ve been wearing Primus Lite III daily basically all day every day since February. My only complaint with the shoe is the mesh can get snagged and cut somewhat easily. My dogs claw was at fault on one or both of the times. I fixed the small tear right away on one and it’s more or less dine. I was slightly lazy getting to the other and it spread and while I did take steps to stop it spreading more I now have a small hole in the mesh. Isn’t not the end of the world but I wish the mesh in the front foot area was just little bit more durable. Still love them and I’ll buy another pair when these get too beat up.

Yeah I can see how that would happen! If and when they do reach end of life you should look into the Primus Lite All Weathers, they've got reinforced and scratch resistant meshing and even though I haven't got first hand experience with it on the lites, they use the same fabric on the all weather trails and it takes one hell of a beating. You'd need a VERY big dog to put it's claws through that stuff 😆

The Vibram Five-Fingers were the first barefoot shoes I remember seeing -- before I even knew what barefoot shoes were all about (apart from what the term suggests, of course.) When I started looking heavily into going into barefoot shoes, of course I was aware of the "finger-toe shoes" as I tend to call them -- and I absolutely knew that I would never actually buy a pair. Guess what my first pair of barefoot shoes is? Yup. The Vibrams. (I got the V-Aqua ones because I had a specific need for water shoes, so I figured I'd kill several birds with one stone -- but I've worn them out on the trails once or twice so far.)

Hi Andrew, in my most humble and honest opinion - yes. They're a great everyday shoe, that said they are the most 'aggressive' barefoot shoes out there (the thinnest) so you might also want to consider the Primus Trail FG Knit as an alternative. Their lugs provide a bit more cushioning underfoot that lends itself well to all day wear, particularly if you're just at the beginning of your barefoot journey. Hope that helps! Clem

I had a very bad ankle Injury from running on a treadmill like I was Arnie from the movie Running Man the Big factor was running in High Heal sponge Nikes that look cool but personally I feel from being uninformed was a detrimental factor to the injury. Typical man I suffered through the injury for possibly 8 months but continued to use tight gripping fashionable trainers, as time went on I got older the injury has caused me terrible pain intermittently but specifically when it's cold or on long walks with the Dog. However the last 2 and half years I have work nothing but Vivo they took a while to get use to the muscles in my feet & ankles would ache a lot but after about a year of wearing them as well as some dietary changes, different exercise routines, especially kettle bells along with deep tissue massages & a great Chiropractor the healing really begun. Thankfully I'm at an age 41 we're I realise I am totally responsible for my health however it was lack of education from when I was younger that made me take this awareness down the tough road but maybe that's the best road.. Now my whole family are wearing Barefoot shoes especially grateful I can educate my 2 year old daughter with this awareness but it's videos like this man & your channel that is changing the game I appreciate you sharing this passion looking forward to more content 🙏🏽

Well, for me the Vibram fivefingers KSO EVO are definetely in top 5. I know they look fucking weird for casual wear... But I use them in the gym only and they are fantastic. Neither of the other brands gives you the same feel as vibrams (the most similar to actual barefoot imo). And on another hand.. I sincerely dont care a shit about how people can look at me when i wear them. Also, about socks... I wear only toesocks, no matter what shoe I choose so... No problem. Primus Trails are a must for me aswell. I have one normal pair, and one all weather pair. And Merrells have the more casual look that sometimes we look for so... Good choice too. Im still with vapor gloves 3 but the 6 look good. Only doubt I have is about durability. We will see. Oh, I almost forgot. When I go hiking or mountaineering.. I usually wear Altras Lone Peak for the higher amortiguation. I think im not still ready to do the longer hikes with a more thinner sole. Time to time hehe

You are not consistent in your evaluation. You say about the Merrell: it lacks the everyday aesthetics that you personally are looking for. I fully agree. But obviously the Vivobarefoot Tracker is no measured by the same standard: for me it is unacceptable because of it‘s looks („hey everybody, you can easily see, I am an ugly barefoot shoe!“). Same goes for the Vibram 5-toes but they are somehow excused because they needed and wanted attention at their time. I would immediately replace the Tracker by the good looking and very comfy feel good Lems Boots.

@@TheBarefootStrengthProject i hear similar stories online. I hear positives too , so I don’t want to distort anyone’s view of the company . I probably am a little disgruntled but I also try to be fair and have integrity My first pair has two holes right through so water and stones can get in. My new pair I’ve had for just over 6 months are going the same way. It’s hard to say how long they will last, maybe another 3-6 months. The lugs/grip seem to wear off really fast . And I’m only doing an average of 2000 steps a day. I think I walk pretty normal , nothing weird. I was much more active in spring and summer months but I’m not hiking or running. I thought it might be my weight but I don’t know. I do have quite a pronounced arch in my foot , whether that is a factor . For casual use , and on trails I could see these lasting longer, but not on concrete . I can see them lasting a lot longer for people 5 stone lighter . They did offer me a one time replacement for one of my two pairs. And …. I’m just out of the 6 month time period but they were willing to still replace . But, it wasn’t really compensation I was looking for . I wanted a conversation about the acceptable-ness of that level of wear in that period of time. The lady I talked to confirmed this was just natural wear, not a defect. She wasn’t really willing to engage in the conversation I wanted to have or answer my questions Feedback would be passed on but there would be nobody contacting me to discuss anything The thing is, I love the brand and love the shoe. I’m a barefoot convert. I e bought 4 pairs of the same shoe, 2 for me , one for my son and another for my daughter/wife. What is going to happen if I buy another pair for a hefty £140 I think they cost now , and they wear out the same way after 6 months , am I going to be given free replacement after free replacement in an infinite loop ? I don’t think so. And even if there was a loophole I could abuse I wouldn’t. She wouldn’t really engage me when I true. To probe down these lines of enquiry . I dont even think I will accept their offer of a free replacement because that doesn’t address the issue properly. What am I going to do in the future? Pay another £140 for 6 months to a year of casual use? I would like to see a public acknowledgment to their customers of poor longevity and a commitment to either toughen them up or reduce the product price. It’s a pity because you want a shoe you can have a bit of faith in and confidence, but it’s hard knowing every month that passes they are wearing quick and there will come a time that water and debris is going to get in and through from the bottom. For me this a one summer shoe. I bought mine at the end of may. Again, I could be a freak of nature and just have a strange combination of factors that contribute to wear. I’m a kind and positive person and very rarely complain about anything as is not in my very laid back nature. I think she suggested that these shoes are meant for trails and that concrete would wear them quicker . I said well that is a fair point and also said but the reality is people will use them for a variety of things. Then I asked along the lines of , does it say that that these shoes are not suitable for concrete ? Is there a clear intended use on their website ? I later had a look and found these quotes “ barefoot trail running sneakers that double as outdoor lifestyle wear” “ firm ground outsole Stand firm on multiple terrains “ “First and foremost a trail runner, the Primus Trail II FG also excels at fastpacking and hiking. Its low profile even makes it popular for outdoor-forward city lifestyles, including HIIT workouts and strength training.” So it’s sounds to me they are not saying “sorry , these shoes are not suitable for concrete as they will wear out quick” But more like “these are designed specifically for trails , but actually , you can use them for pretty much anything, for the city (concrete) , for the gym etc. Before I read these quotes I said that I was either willing or willing to consider giving them the benefit of the doubt and trying a different shoe like the primus lite to put it to the test and see if they can cope with 6 months . To be honest I doubt it , from just look looking at them (I have a women’s pair I bought used) and from other reviews I’ve read. In their favour I think they do have a 100 day testing period but I don’t think that will work for me , because I don’t believe they are going to keep infinitely replacing the shoe for free , even thought in my eyes the level of wear is not acceptable in that period of time So I don’t know. Don’t let me put anyone off. DO TRY THEM. Buy a pair. There are so many positives. They fit like a glove and feel fantastic. My feet adjusted to them in weeks . I really don’t want to buy any other brand . But I’m in a dilemma . I have expensive tastes. I don’t mind spending money. Even a little more than is justifiable. But there’s comes a point where you have to draw the line. Am I going to spend another £140 ? I don’t know. t the moment I’m leaning towards no.

Xero make some really good shoes including both the Prio & the HFS mentioned in this thread BUT for me, not quite good enough to make the list. I'll give a brief why on each model below plus a general why at the bottom. Prio: With a 1cm total stack height including the insole, these rob far too much ground feel for my liking though they would make a good transitionary barefoot shoe or be suited to use on concrete. HFS: Between the 5mm sole (plus 3.5mm insole) and the thin and flexible uppers the HFS come up too thick in the base (though better than the Prio) and unstable in lateral movement (bad for runners, gym-goers etc). Also despite Xero's 5000mile SOLE warranty, the thin fabric used on the upper of the shoe seems to disintegrate well before. Both have great fit, great feel, decent build quality BUT both have drawbacks and when comparing that with the models in the video that generally have superior ground feel, build quality and durability as well as better overall sustainability practices for when shoes are worn through (see Vivobarefoots 'revivo' program) so with all that considered, I don't feel Xero can compete for a top spot.

Haha okay, I’ll bite. 1) the barefoot transition guide is not £15, it’s $7 USD which at todays exchange rate is £5.49 BUT there are ‘patreon-esq’ options available to support the channel by paying more. You get no more for it but it helps me out as a small KZreadr 2) It’s not about how to wear a shoe. I am very confident that anyone watching this channel can put on a shoe and tie their own laces. What it DOES is show & explain how someone that’s new to barefoot shoes (worn normal shoes their whole life but just bought a £150 pair of vivos) how to transition safely and without injury. It does that in a work sheet format by calculating your individual risk factors in a number of different areas (from weight, to experience, to terrain, to activity etc) and providing individual daily, weekly and at times monthly step count goals. It also breaks down the most common injuries and their warnings signs and a few other things. In other words it contains valuable information, answers questions most people don’t know how to ask let alone answer and therefore has value. Is £5.49 the right value? To me that seems cheap relative to the value it can provide the user BUT if you’re not the ideal user (someone transitioning to barefoot shoes) then it would be a waste of money.
