Bernard would tap you on the shoulder and would say ' You got It"
You are fantastic man. Unbelievable 😢
You have done some major work here, l have spent so many hours trying to get it right, and I didn't 😅! I haven't seen anybody of YT coming remotely close to your accuracy and seriousness! I wish you were around 10 years ago, people don't understand how much it takes to play this lines accurate!! You're from now on my nr 1 bassite!! Thanks!!
Re "saying so much with so little" and "I Want Your Love" -- as a rank beginner starting to grapple with this, I feel lucky that while there are other bass lines I like a lot ("Love Hangover", "Don't Leave Me This Way", "To Be Real", etc), my favorite happens to be within basic reach. I say basic, because hitting the notes is one thing, getting Edwards' tone is another. Thanks for the in-depth coverage of my favorite bass track.
Bernard Edwards is amazing, I love every single bass line he’s played. ✌️😙

Great breakdowns. One of my favorite Chic tunes is Sao Paulo. Another awesome bass line is Savoire Faire. Thanks for the vid
Beautiful tribute to one of my favorite bass players. I learned a lot. Well done ! Thank you.
Thanks, mr. Foster!
Bernard is my FAVE! Him and Nile wearing those BLU blockers on mtv was my entire childhood! Thanx Stu! You the man! 💯 Youre Caucasian bass brother Tbzl Foshzl, Charlotte NC
Having spent countless hours listening to Bernard Edwards' playing...this is great. Cool hat too.
Great video. Thank you! And thanks for bringing attention to the music of CHIC - the Parthenon of Rock n Roll.
shit still resonates today as strong as when it came out. thanks for the vid, great selection, guest and tutorials edwards, even as revered as he is, is still underrated :discoclap:
Excellent, vous êtes un super bassiste, bravo.

Merci beaucoup!
I was struggling with the chucking technique. Not so much how to do it, but it just wouldn’t sound right. Too aggressive with my nails. But then when you mentioned it was palm muted I did that and the tone was nailed straight away. Thanks!!!
Great series, had a lot of fun listening to you play :D Thanks for doing this!
Man!! This is an awesome video!!! Great content!!
Excellent video thanks Huw 👌🔥
OMG learn something new everyday God bless these originators and trendsetters.
Hey Huw, I think you have mastered who to me is one of the all time great rythm bassist. Incredible work. Bernard Edwards IS THE reason I picked up this instrument and while I can't even get close on most of these bass lines, they give me a challenge to strive for. Thank you for sharing some of his secrets. Great work Mate.
Your videos are always so good bro ❤ loved it
Excellent content and playing as always! 👍🏾🙏🏿
Great great breakdown. Many thanks!
Your videos are gold!
Well researched, exceptional playing. Top work, Huw!
LOVE this!!! Beautifully done mate ❤ 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼
Excellent Video, top to bottom. Thank You!
Very nice stuff!! 👌👌👌
you got it. accurate as hell. Edward was genius!
Absolutely loved this video, your infectious enthusiasm for the bass playing was fantastic
Best explanation of the chucking technique that I have found to date. Subscribed and have been practicing this for hours :). Thanks!
Bruv, you nailed these
So clear. Right pace and no waffle. The way you through in a few references to keys and scales makes that interesting. I'm off to search the rest of your stuff. Well done.
Thanks foster

Awesome video ! Thank you ! His basslines are very very nice. I have to learn the chucking or chunking technique.
So great. Thank you so much for this! And you nailed the tone. If you're taking requests for similar segments, my vote is Leon Sylvers III!
Thanks for the tips! I will most definitely attempt trying them first chance I get. Yours... is the most intricate lesson I've seen on Bernard's style. Past fascinating; more inspirational! I'm going to try it! 🎸 ✌️
Bernard is one of my favorite Bassists. You do a great job transcribing his lines. 🫵🏼 Great job. I Subscribed 👍🏼

Excellent breakdown of these amazing basslines and also great selection. It's really hard to pick just a few amongst Bernard's masterful basslines, but I would have selected the same. My Forbidden Lover is particularly amazing and challenging. The fills are so incredibly funky and tasteful! Even the apparently simplest basslines Bernard created have little details and such great touch that actually replicating the groove is not easy, but you did it so well!
Fantastic video - thanks a lot!
Thanks a lot! Great work
Your amazing
This is so well done and such an incredible resource for bass players, especially those that love funk. One of my favorite Bernard basslines is Sao Paulo. So amazing and tricky to perfect.
First time viewing your channel. Wow - this is excellent! Subscribed and I'll definitely be checking out all your videos 🤩
Huw, your love for Bernard's lines shines through. Great choices and well played. This might have to leap ahead on my practice pile.

Thanks so much! He really is one of my favourite bassists of all time, and the funny thing is that the realisation happened gradually. Maybe it’s because I play ‘We Are Family’ most weekends, and never get bored!
Just came across your channel. Love the fact that you are nailing down all my bass heroes that provided me fun and inspiration during the 80s when I started learning bass. You have a new fellow bass player who supports you via patreon. Thank you for passing on the excitement of playing bass!

Huw, you rock! Could you think about doing a similar segment on Mark Adams of Slave? That would be awesome!
As a GUITAR PLAYER...(and sometime bass player), "Nard's" bass lines were the anthem to my youth. I first heard Chic, and very soon after Sister Sledge, in 1977...and I was HOOKED! 😳 YOUR playing...is the NEAREST I've ever heard to getting BE's style and tone DEAD RIGHT! Amazing "chucking"...😊 And...WHERE DID YOU GET THAT HAYMAN (Shergold?) FROM?! 🤔 They are rare as hens teeth now. I remember when the first came out!
@HuwFoster
7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I got the Hayman from someone on the Basschat forum. They had bought it off someone who rescued the original, replacing the bowed neck with a Shergold one. So technically it’s a Hayman and a Shergold!
Never seen the technique on the 1st song before, thank you. I believe a new callus is in my near future. Also never seen a Hayman before, sounds great !

Bernard used the chucking technique a few times - I believe you can hear it on ‘I’m Coming Out’ by Diana Ross as well. It takes some getting used to, but really fun! Let me know how you get on.
I personally would have swapped out “Everybody Dance” with “Dance, Dance, Dance” although comparable in some regards the complexity with playing those octaves at that speed in “Dance, Dance, Dance” would have been more worthy of your time IMHO. Great work showing the world the awesome talent that was BE.
I agree with the comments below: really beautifully done!

The bass I’m using for most of the video is a Musicman Stingray. They’re not cheap though! There are cheaper brands as well - Sterling by Music Man is a licensed cheaper version, and you can still get second hand OLP basses which are a similar deal.

Yes, the chucking technique is done with the finger. I explain in the video, but can outline it as follows: lightly put your thumb and finger together as if holding a pick (but with a bit of your fingertip poking out), then use the nail of your finger for downstrokes, and the fingertip for upstrokes.
