I wish you were around 10 years ago, people don't understand how much it takes to play this lines accurate!! You're from now on my nr 1 bassite!! Thanks!!

    Re "saying so much with so little" and "I Want Your Love" -- as a rank beginner starting to grapple with this, I feel lucky that while there are other bass lines I like a lot ("Love Hangover", "Don't Leave Me This Way", "To Be Real", etc), my favorite happens to be within basic reach. I say basic, because hitting the notes is one thing, getting Edwards' tone is another. Thanks for the in-depth coverage of my favorite bass track.

    Excellent breakdown of these amazing basslines and also great selection. It's really hard to pick just a few amongst Bernard's masterful basslines, but I would have selected the same. My Forbidden Lover is particularly amazing and challenging. The fills are so incredibly funky and tasteful! Even the apparently simplest basslines Bernard created have little details and such great touch that actually replicating the groove is not easy, but you did it so well!

    As a GUITAR PLAYER...(and sometime bass player), "Nard's" bass lines were the anthem to my youth. I first heard Chic, and very soon after Sister Sledge, in 1977...and I was HOOKED! 😳 YOUR playing...is the NEAREST I've ever heard to getting BE's style and tone DEAD RIGHT! Amazing "chucking"...😊 And...WHERE DID YOU GET THAT HAYMAN (Shergold?) FROM?! 🤔 They are rare as hens teeth now. I remember when the first came out!

  • @HuwFoster

    @HuwFoster

    Thanks for the kind words! I got the Hayman from someone on the Basschat forum. They had bought it off someone who rescued the original, replacing the bowed neck with a Shergold one. So technically it’s a Hayman and a Shergold!

    I personally would have swapped out “Everybody Dance” with “Dance, Dance, Dance” although comparable in some regards the complexity with playing those octaves at that speed in “Dance, Dance, Dance” would have been more worthy of your time IMHO. Great work showing the world the awesome talent that was BE.

    Yes, the chucking technique is done with the finger. I explain in the video, but can outline it as follows: lightly put your thumb and finger together as if holding a pick (but with a bit of your fingertip poking out), then use the nail of your finger for downstrokes, and the fingertip for upstrokes.
