5 amazing biomimicry examples providing real sustainability solutions | Architecture Building Energy

In this whiteboard animation, I present sustainable solutions inspired by nature for construction, architecture as well as ventilation, heating and cooling buildings. 25% of the total CO2 emissions worldwide are attributed to heat and energy and residential and commercial buildings are responsible for about half this 25%, so 12% of total greenhouse gas emissions so we need to do better on this.

    I recently stumbled on the Stenocara gracilipes or the "Nambi Beetle" that uses the texture on its back to collect water from the surrounding atmosphere. With the upcoming global water crisis, I believe that incorporating such a design or texture onto the exterior walls of the building may prove to be beneficial. I was hoping I could get your input on the same :)

    I find that my Architecture and Interior Design students remember the purpose of the acronym HVAC much better when I call it Heating, Ventilating, and Cooling. Any air that is changed from outside temperature is "conditioned" therefore AC shouldn't just mean cooling, but heating as well. I will *continue* with my evolved terms for the acronym.

  • @learnsustainability

    @learnsustainability

    Probably yes, but I would also say that nature does not do only geometrical forms. Some things like bee cells are perfectly geometrical (hexagons) but most things are not (trees, corals, etc).
