I've been there several times. You can still walk the abandoned graffiti road. It's broken up and shifting, but local kids ride their quads there. We walked all around the area. There's an old guy that is kind of the self appointed Centralia historianl. He carries a photo album with him and is more than happy to spend hours telling you about the town in it's heyday.

I live 15 minutes south of Picher/Treece they're practically the same town and should have been put together on the list. The city limits literally touch. While it is very contaminated and the Government has labeled it a "Superfund Site" you can still go there. My grandmother lived in Picher for 75 years until they closed the town after an F-5 tornado rolled thru and leveled everything. She then moved in with my parents where she lived til the age of 96 years old. Its a very interesting town with a history thats wild if anyone likes a good rabbit hole to go down.

You are totally wrong about Centralia. People willing to accept the risk can and do go there. In addition to that 7 to 10 original residents still live there and one has assumed responsibility for tending the cemetery, mowing grass, etc. The USPS a few years ago tried to stop mail delivery to the remaining residents, but they appealed that decision and won! I don't know what's changed in the last couple of years, but I know it is accessible, no matter who forbids what.

No-one has mentioned it's not a gov ordered burn over a mine that set the blaze either. The town regularly burned trash at the dump as part of their waste management. Embers from one said burn ignited an active mine shaft, that was currently vacant. Carbon monoxide, while a silent enemy, is not the main problem, its the fact the whole place is a giant sinkhole caused by a burning underground. The mines are not collapsing in, its the veins of coal burning, leaving a network of caverns underneath. It is partial inspiration for the silent hill series. Many of the people held out, and stayed for years on their "conviction". There is also one incident of a boy being swallowed by a sinkhole, luckily he was heavily clothed for winter, and his brother pulled him from it and removed him from his burning clothing, leaving him with only minor abrasions. Everyone didn't evacuate the town immediately, and some went so far as to cut off half of their row home house, from their neighbors affected or abandoned portion of the house, to remain there. The US GOV attempted to force a buy out of the residents, some successfully resisted, most to old to want to live anywhere else. Once the GOV acquired the property, the home, and any buildings were demolished to prevent occupation. As of last year, only two residents, and two homes remained. One is a curator of sorts, and the other is most likely to die of old age soon, also known as the major, not an officially elected appointee, but appointed by default.

Wittenoom is not off limits. You are advised not to go there but there is nothing to stop you from doing so. I visited there around three years ago on my way home from work. Drove around the town with the windows closed and the vents on recirc. Got out of the car to take a selfie in front of the sign that says 'Wittenoom Gems' but took a deep breath before opening the door and held it. Also met Mario, the town's only resident and employed by the weather bureau to take weather readings twice a day. I spoke to him through the open window for a minute or so. Fascinating place.

Sad to report an inaccuracy in the video. The first town, Centralia Pennsylvania. It is not off limits, and we can visit if we wish. As of 2013, 7 people live in the city. They are allowed to live out their lives there, after which the state will take the property via eminent domain. The fire has moved quite a bit since it started. The air over Centralia is no longer as bad as it was. In fact, it's roughly the same quality as a near by city Pennsylvania where there has been no fire. If the ground were not so dangerous from collapse, it could one day become an active city. But it hopefully will instead become a wildlife/nature preserve.

I grew up in Picher & Treece, Treece is a part of Picher that crossed into Kansas. I grew up on those chat piles and spent over 15 years riding 4 wheelers/dirt bikes on them, hunting on them, shooting etc. There was a large problem with the lead in the ground water but 98% of all chat piles have been removed over the past 10 or so years and the town looks nothing like it used to. There's only 1 resident left in the town and that person lives at the Fire Department. What's absolutely insane about Picher, and it makes the conspiracy theorists bust nuts all over the place; Picher sold out half of their homes to the goverment, the lower end homes were the ones to accept the buyout as they were offered more than their property was worth. However after long talks & debate, the higher end home owners wouldn't sell out as they were taking a loss. One clear blue sunny day a tornado formed in between a group of chat piles and wiped out every single house that wouldn't sell out. It didn't track north into the homes that had already been bought out, instead it rose up out of the basin in these chat piles, tracked east, wiped out every single home that didn't sell out, then rose back up after the last house was hit. It's interesting & funny to hear some of the conspiracies, but it was still a shitty deal as those people lost everything and didn't receive any government assistance and instead relied on red cross etc just to get clothes on their backs. Picher/Cardin/Treece have their demons, but it isn't a hellish nightmare that this vid portrays it as

Pripyat, Ukraine isn't off-limits, you can visit, in fact, you can even take a guided tour if you wish. My friend visited the abandoned city, known for the Chernobyl disaster that forced it's desertion. She was allowed to explore and photograph there, walk around, go in the abondoned apartment buildings, etc. She wasn't part of a tour, she just wandered around solo. Radiation levels have dropped significantly since the fatal levels of 1986, and it is now considered generally safe, with only low levels of radiation still existing, as the video stated, you're getting nuked more going through airport security than spending a few hours at Pripyat. Obviously it's still not suitable for people to reside there permanently, as that can be evidenced by the radiation levels of wildlife who live in Pripyat, but it has become kind of an odd tourist attraction. My friend thought it was awesome when she was there. I want to check it out myself sometime.

Treece Ks and Picher Okla are pretty much the same area/zone. The town was bought out by the government after it was plowed over by a powerful tornado. Having also been a major superfund site it just wasn't worth rebuilding it. Interesting note almost two years to the date (missed by like one-two days) Joplin Mo (less than 30 miles away) was also hit by a category 5 tornado. Joplin however managed to recover. You can still travel to these places but I do not recommend it. The area was also heavily mined and those shafts have now flooded and cave-ins abound. I was born and raised there and most of us turned out fine and the chat piles were a kick to slide down in the winter when they were covered in snow. Its very strange to lose your entire home town. I still have dreams where I'm there and oddly I do miss it still.

Wittenoom has a parallel in the US: Libby , Montana. The city is not off-limits, but has been extensively cleaned up under EPA Superfund. The problem: W.R. Grace operated a vermiculite mine north of the city. Libby vermiculite is contaminated with four types of amphibole asbestos, the worst kind. Mine workers and their families were extensively exposed, and insulation using Libby vermiculite was extensively used in Libby homes and businesses, in addition to their sale to other regions (brand names Zonolite and Monokote).

I reside about 15 minutes from Centralia PA. It's true that the borough was relocated. However there are state roads through running through the place that are open to public travel. There are a few homes still there and the Municipal building still stands. Occasionally at night there are a few vehicles parked near this building and the inside light is on ,therefore there is some type of social activity still going on there. Although there is some private property that is posted, the vicinity is not restricted. As a matter of fact the blocked off section of cracked highway is an unofficial tourist attraction. If you do decide to visit, be advised that the area has a large amount of graffiti on the blocked of highway section that contains rough language.

Centralia, PA: Ironically enough, I visited Centralia about 3 months before you uploaded this video. There's nothing really to see, just a road grid running through now vacant fields, the Graffiti Highway, and a few homes which are still occupied. 100% not off limits, and 100% not deadly. Pripyat, Ukraine: You can literally book a tour there. There are a few small sites within the exclusion zone which are still off limits due to high concentrations of radioactivity, but that's it. Being that you're 0 for 2 so far, I don't see a reason to continue watching.

Centralia is not off limits, several public roads go through the area and are still used daily and maintained the only place really off limits besides the posted private properties is the graffiti highway (part of Route 61) because of the dangers involved with a several hundred foot crack along that section. Police are patrolling more in the area due to both vandalism and illegal racing on the graffiti highway. I know this because I am from PA and we went to Centralia to see the sights a lot its an awesome sight to see how nature has taken over. The area roads are constantly monitored for safety because of the occasional sink hole but so far the only part shut down is the area of 61 this may expand in the future if they find more roads becoming unsafe to use but it is doubtful.

Patrick noone yes it still is in places, they think it will take at least another 50 or 60 years to burn out completely. The biggest danger of CO1 is gone most of the town is private property owned by PennDOT the rest is owned by the under 20 remaining residents and will go to state ownership after their death. The only part truly off limits as I said are the stretch of highway and the posted properties there are 3 or 4 major roads that go through and you can see several parts of the town but visitors aren't welcome as in the past because of leaving garbage and the residents are getting to the age they just want quiet.

People still live in Cenralia, PA. As of 2015, 11 people still reside in Centralia and in 2013 even, 7 people were living there. Also, my friens brother and his friends had visited the town. They said in certain areas you can see the smoke rising and they actually spoke to some of the residents there and learned even more about the town and fires. I have done allot of research on this town and before you make a video, you really need to get the correct facts and information. I also would like to point out that the movie, Silent Hill, is based on Centralia,Pennsylvania, and that is how I found out about this town.

The town I was born in is mostly abandoned and the roads going through it are closed. Ostensibly this is because of the mines shutting down...but I always thought it was because toxic waste was stored some of the older, no longer used, mine shafts, had been for a long time and the barrels had probably begun to leak. There were many places where the creeks and ponds that had once been full of life were just dead...and many children were born with birth defects, many women had miscarriages(a cousin had 9) and many people of all ages had a variety of cancers. I lost several family members. To this day, no one has admitted the truth...no one has been held responsible...and the few people left are mostly pursuing a living producing and selling various illegal substances. And they do NOT welcome visitors. It's not the same place where my family lived for generations, not my home anymore. Damn tragic, because the land was heartbreakingly beautiful.

A neighbor put some of his old appliances on his curb side for refuge pick up by the sanitation crews. The items were fairly new but non functional. I asked him if I could use some of it for my crafting. He said yes. So I use metal in crafting and welding. I took the stove oven metal panels off of it. Behind them was asbestos batting insulation for high heat insulating the heat from the oven. This type of material is probably in the new appliance as well because it does have some high heat resistance properties. So there may be asbestos lurking in quite a few kitchens around the U. S. I worked with some asbestos while on a HVAC crew. It appears to be the same material but much newer condition without of course water damage to it. Being outside with more than adequate ventilation, I pulled some of it out while staying upwind from it. Yes small fibrous particles went airborne which appeared to be the exact match particulates as asbestos. Some people may be shocked at some of the lax standards per cancerous causing materials that are still in use such as beryllium within electronics and even microwaves. I hate to say it but the truth is the truth. Its not only abandoned places as above that are toxic but just about everywhere where people live. We all make the environment toxic in many ways and by the manufacture of more than many products as well as services.

The picture at 0:41 is actually Main St at Tower Ave, in Centralia --Washington--, known as "Hub City", which you can still visit, as there are numerous antique stores in the area.

You are allowed in Centrailia Pa. I’ve been there many times. In the recent years there had not been any smoke coming from the ground. Many many people go there every year.
