Excellent, I guess that was the reason for doing the video. Every time the chair gets me on the beach I find it quite emotional thinking of the 30yrs I had to watch from a distance. Hope your project comes together.

Hi there, Love this video. I have a MagicMobility Frintier V6AT, the little brother to to the x8. I was wonderinging if you would be willing to share how to make these modifications? I would love to be able to this to my chair.

Hi Brett, well I have finished my x8 conversion. I managed to get a charger that plugs into the conventional connector. There was no chair modifications needed. My x8 supplier found me a charger that charges while the chair is mobile. I mounted a 2200w Full Boar generator on the back. Weight 24kgs. I hope to try this Good Friday. All going well it will give me more distance for photography.

hi Hanz, good luck, let us know how you get on. I had a big trip on the beach between Brunswick heads and Byron and return. 19.6km. it identified a few issues so i've added a second 8amp charger giving 16amp/hr in total at 24v. i'll also make sure the generator tank is full next time! best wishes, Brett

@@brettpoulsen1299 Hi Brett, I have done two 12klm trips so far. Both times with the generator on Eco, I have used 500mls of fuel each time. The generator just idles. On my return home my meter still had 3 green. Before I was down to 2 yellow. So I can say the conversion has been worth it. The Luggage rack was $180 the generator was $798 and the new charger was $420. So around $1400 but this now allows me to go further and not having to return in a taxi. Thanks for giving me this idea Brett. Cheers Hanz

Outstanding idea and mod! I'm trying to get the Veterans Administration in the USA to order this chair for me because my Air Hawk wheelchair batteries are about used up and it didn't get me anywhere I wanted unless i was on good flat concrete. Do you have any suggestions on how could modify this chair for my wife to stand or sit on the back so that she can keep up with me?

Hi mate, my kids have done hours and hours sitting sideways on an arm rest but they got abit big for that at about age 12. I imagine you could possible have bigger arm rests, mine are quite short and narrow. A better idea would be a trolley that hangs behind your chair. a mate built one for his partner and they did a lot of europe with it. just two caster wheels with a platform between and an attachment to the chair. Id image with bigger wheels it would work off-road, certainly the x8 has plenty of power. Brett

@@brettpoulsen1299@brettpoulsen1299 For some reason KZread never notified me that you had replied, so I just saw it as I went back to watch the video again. I truly appreciate you telling me what you did. I sure with I could find the cargo shelf for sale in the USA. I've had no luck finding them and have been told they are only available in Australia, but they won't sell and ship it to me. 👎 And, what you're describing about a trolley (like a trailer) and attaching it to the rear would be absolutely perfect for my wife. I wish someone sold such a thing. I guess I'll just have to wait until it's delivered, which should be any day now, and try to figure it out somehow then. Again, thank you for your reply and I pray you and your family are having a happy new year! 🎉😊🎉😊🎉

Hi Brett, Hope all is well. I have had a couple trips and on each trip with generator attached , I have returned with full green. Works well with the generator. One question if I may. what distance do you get from your x8 without generator. When new I got 22klms, now despite new batteries, I only get around 12klms. I have approached Magic mobility in the hope to correct the issue. With new batteries I would expect at least 19klms as I am only 85 kilograms. My chair has done 2500klms. Cheers

hi Hanz, it is great the generator is working. I have the same issue with new batteries, I'm always disappointed with the apparent capacity. They say it takes 2 weeks for them to break in, I find it's closer to 2 months! Hopefully with some time yours will come good. Brett

Hi, I am in Orange NSW and own the same x8. Please can you tell me - can the chair still run while the chair is charging. I thought the chair was immobilized once the charger was plugged in. Please can you tell me what you did re modifying to electrics so as I can do the same. I go bush bird photographing and have to keep an eye on the charge. Sometimes I have been caught out and ran out of power then needing a taxi recovery. Your assistance is appreciated. cheers Hanz

hi Hanz, I had an old charger lieing around that is wired direct to the batteries so this bypasses the cutout that stops the chair moving when charging by the normal port. (that cutout can be changed in software by a wheelchair technician so you can charge the normal way and still move). because the charger puts out 8amps at 24v and your chair has 2 12v batteries it needs to be wired in correctly but that's easy for an auto electrician or smart electrical person. ctek and others have a higher capacity charger, 14amp at 24v i think if 8 is not enough, but i find 8 ok. hope this helps, Brett

hi Anthony, just the charger that came std with the chair, 8amps @ 24v. I directly wired it to the batter but as Hanz says below you can plug it straight to the std charging port. There may be an inhibit that stops the chair moving when charging, that can be disabled in software or you can isolate the inhibit pin, the center of the three pins in the charger plug. cheers

Did you have to adjust the wave output of charger to match the battery and drive system ? and as i haven't received my new x8 yet ! With my old chair when charging it cuts out the ability to drive ! Did you have to rearrange that to allow charging while driving ?

Hi, I have one charger wired directly to the batteries to avoid that issue, when i needed more than 8amps charging (very soft sand) i ran a 2nd charger direct to the normal recharge pt on the controller. To avoid the issue you mention it was necessary to disconnect the inhibitor pin. This is the middle pin of the three on the std plug. Its sole purpose is to stop the chair moving when its being recharged. Does that make sense?

Yeah, maybe. Being low and behind it's not to bad, I was thinking of sound proofing but not needed. If I'm traveling into the wind i can't hear it, if the wind is coming from behind you then you know it's there. Its easy to turn on and off, i always turn it off at lunch or when stopped, batteries obviously still work as normal. In practice i would only run it coming home when batteries are getting low, say after 12km, then it's just insurance.
