    @Jeff M, They were hardly robbed at all? They deserved 8th place at best. This whole entire program was skated side by side, which is easy. You can't just take a riverdance program and slap it on the ice it has be reconstructed to include the require difficult elements. Their OD seriously lacked content and it rivals some of the program content of teams in the 11th to 18th region. You also have to look at their Compulsory Dances which were quite weak. They made about 10 mistakes in the Golden Waltz, and about 6 in the Argentine Tango. They should have been 9th place in the end. Even the ISU president at the time said something about their being mistake in Bourne and Kraatz program.

    Bourne & Kraatz always pushed the envelope in terms of their routines and music selection relative to their European counterparts (who kept it conservative and classical) and at a time when figure skating judging was beyond subjective and open to the interpretation and feelings of the judges, they always got punished in standings! These were the yesteryears in figure skating and THANK GOD the judging system has changed and actually challenges ice dancers to create unique and different programs.

  • @MsRumex

    @MsRumex

    2 жыл бұрын

    LOL) "conservative and classical" in the 1990s ISU wanted to see ballroom dancing routines, and literally, all teams did have ballroom dances. Grishuk and Platov did have rock-and-roll, tap dance, Latin dance etc. Krylova and Ovsjanikov had Russian folk music, and flamenco, before that Krulova and Fedorov did have rock and roll, and Latin style dance; Anisina and Peizerat had tango, Latin medley, and flamenco, the Italian team had some Sicilian dance, Moniot and Lavanchy did have "fred and ginger", gypsy style dance etc. Bourne & Kraatz did use exactly the same kind of music and created exactly the same type of programs. With one exception - they did not skate close together in closed dance holds (and this is what was required). And I totally disagree that now "ice dancers create unique and different programs", as most of the programs nowadays are in fact are very very similar. They are not only similar to each other, they are also similar from one year to the next year - as they all are doing very similar lifts (to satisfy difficulties levels) they all are doing similar twizzles, they all are doing very similar-looking one-footed step sequences etc. And almost no one DANCES now. They just are doing acrobatic things on the ice. It's very boring. (IMHO)

    All these clueless people in the comments don’t know what they are talking about. Bourne/Kraatz DID NOT DESERVE A MEDAL AT ALL. This program was weak and just lacked a lot of elements that made an ice dance program an ice dance program. It would be a nice exhibition number but not at all a good ice dance program. Too much side by side skating and way too open of handholds. Their Compulsory Dance and Original Dance were disastrous and just a flat out hot mess. So not they were not great here.

    Hardly. They made multiple errors in both the Golden Waltz and Argentine Tango compulsory dances (it seems like out of all the top couples, they were the only ones who could not skate their counters or their twizzles properly). They had the simplest OD out of all the top 10 couples (something that American commentator Judy Blumberg tore them apart for in the OD at Worlds a few weeks later). And this free dance was skated almost entirely side by side. The choreography was way too open for them to even be considered for a medal.

    @@MsRumex They probably thought they deserved even higher than that. I think Dubova enabled their entitled attitudes. I think she had become bitter and jaded over the years watching skaters leave her and become World and Olympic champions with different coaches (e.g. Klimova, Ponomarenko, Grishuk, Platov). She also lost the uber-talented Navka in 1995 due to her coaching politics (when she found out about the affair between her and Zhulin, she sent Navka away). But after the fall of communism, her work started to become disappointing and by 2002, her last memorable role was as a consultant of some sort for Anissina & Peizerat and she also led Chait & Sakhnovsky to a super-controversial bronze medal at the 2002 Worlds. She faded from sight after that.

    I can't see how they could've challenged for a medal because this program was skated entirely hand to hand or side by side. Overall however, I do think this program was a very good idea. The problem was that the steps need to be reconstructed so that it's an ice dance program and not just a dance program (taken verbatim) on top of an ice surface. Ice dancers need to skate as closely together as possible to demonstrate how well integrated they are with one another.

Compulsories never were their strength and they weren’t great in those phases here, and their original dance was incredibly weak. There was no technical content to speak of in that performance, especially if you stack it up against both Russian teams and the French, and they should have dropped out of the top 4 entirely after the original. The Americans had much better, more difficult , more interesting original and free dances and they were robbed being so far down.
