鹿児島県の南の海に浮かぶ屋久島は、独特の地形をしています。
黒潮が流れる海から、一気に2000m級の山々が聳えているのです。山の頂付近には巨大な丸い岩がゴロゴロと転がり、谷には無数の滝が流れ、深い森には樹齢3000年にもなる巨木“屋久杉”が生えています。
土壌が薄く、栄養が乏しい岩だらけの島では、杉の成長は遅く年輪が密になります。それが、屋久杉が長生きするヒミツでした。
そうした屋久島特有の大自然を生んだのは、大量の雨でした。山間部では多い年で年間1万ミリの雨が降ります。
降水量はなんと日本の平均の5倍以上にもなるのです。
屋久島は、地下深くでマグマが冷え固まった花崗岩か隆起して誕生しました。そのため、島まるごとひとつの巨大な岩の塊なのです。花崗岩は隆起する際に無数のひび割れが生まれます。それのひび割れが、山頂付近に丸い岩を誕生させていました。

Summer is the time to go! Japan’s First World Heritage Site-Yakushima
Yakushima Island, located in the southern sea of Japan’s Kagoshima Prefecture, has a unique topography.
Mountains in the 2,000-meter class rise precipitously from the ocean where the Kuroshio Current flows. Huge roundboulders are strewn around the tops of the mountains, countless waterfalls run through the valleys, and giant Yakusugi cedars, trees as old as 3,000 years, grow in the deep forests.
Yakushima’s unique nature is the result of abundant rainfall. In the mountainous areas, 10,000 mm of rain falls annually in a heavy year. This is more than five times the average amount of rainfall in Japan.
Yakushima Island was created by the uplift of granite that was formed when magma cooled and hardened deep underground. Thus, the entire island is one giant block of rock. As the granite rises, countless cracks are created. These cracks produced the rounded rocks near the summit.
On the rocky island, where the soil is thin and nutrient-poor, the cedars grow slowly and havetight annual tree rings. This is the secret to the longevity of the Yakusugi.
