4K: UNION PACIFIC'S ROTARY SNOW PLOW ON DONNER PASS (FEBRUARY 2023)
Ойын-сауық
Enjoy footage of the rotary snow plow running on the Donner Pass.
The last time these mammoth machines ran was in 2017, before that as 2011.
Today's purpose was to clean up the steep snow walls reaching over 11 feet in spots. These tall snow walls were encroaching on the 2 track keeping auto racks from running on that main and tying up the route.
Enjoy

Great shots, great video. Everything is big in the US, the snow falls, and the snow removers....
Bad snowbank to build a snow cave in! Awesome video. Blessings!
From the movie Kingsman... "F#$*ing Spectacular" nothing better than snow removal equipment. Thx
Awesome had not seen before this year snowcats working with the rotary, reminds me of some videos a up worker posting a few years ago of two snowcats running along side a spreader
Awesome watching UP snow bower in action! Love the Union Pacific as my most favorite of all the American railroads!!!! Keep the videos coming.
First rotary plow I’ve seen. Add in a drone in beautiful country and it’s spectacular! Thank you! My daughter got a kick out of the flying snow. It’s mesmerizing 👀 😊
Great video and wonderful sound! Thanks for sharing!
I love anything to do with Donner Pass 😊👍🏻 , thanks for the videos
Absolutely spectacular! General populous take note, this is what it takes to get goods and services to people.
absolutely fantastic! thank you for sharing!
Great video, Appreciate you taken the time for us to view something amazing.
One of the best rotary videos I've seen yet! Thanks for posting this. The shot at 9:22 is stellar, with the snow throwing and you can see the exhaust from the B-unit shooting up in run 8!
Amazing footage. Tough mountain railroading at it's best. Bet those boys are out there right now with what hit Cali this last week. Stay safe out there and make it home.
WOW just spectacular video from the air and ground of this operation. We enjoyed watching and have a wonderful rest of your evening.(Steve)

Incredible! Thank you so much for posting this video. I was up there last month and walked a section of the line. Never seen so much snow up there. Will be back up next week, if the weather permits! Man, oh man what a snow year!
Wow! Outstanding video.

Great to see Southern Pacific remembered by the numbers on the plows and support units. I hope they remain.

Top shelf video of awesome rotary action. Interesting to find out that the rotaries haven't been out since 2017. I thought that they would be used every winter.

Great video..
Beautiful camera work
Awesome footage! You must have one heck of a drone...very good quality video!
pretty amazing. Subscribed! I have some rotary footage from the 1970s in need of sound; I was wondering if I could work something out to utilize this (or something else from your catalog) in that video (with due credit, $ if necessary, links to your YT page both in the description and actual body of the video; you name it). Thanks much--again--amazing!
Impressive, dude at Soda Springs got "snowed", would be interesting to see a full face of snow drifts, but regardless lots of snow flying.
Excellent! Would anyone know why rotaries so often throw the snow to the left, over the other track instead of to the right?

Throwing it downhill. They are pretty powerful, as you can see, and can toos it farily clear of the other track.
Ok now I’ve seen it all. A pair of SD70ACe’s as the power

4 GP38-2's would be better

@@michaeldorosz6446 Two SD70ACe's deliver 8,600 horsepower and 310,000 lbs of continuous tractive effort by 24 wheels driven by AC traction motors - nearly impossible to stall out. In contrast, four GP-38-2's bring 8,000 HP but only 218,800 lbs of TE to the rails, with easier-to-stall DC traction motors. Back in the day (1950's), the Southern Pacific pushed a steam-powered rotary and tender (but no F7B snail unit) using a single AC-12 Cab Forward locomotive, delivering 6,000 HP and 123,400 lbs of tractive effort on 16 drivers. Tragically, in Jan 1952, Cab Forward #4245 while attempting to rescue passenger train 101, the City of San Francisco, overturned when it hit a slide, killing engineer Holland Raymond. @@tomlandgraf3938 great research on all those facts! My only concern was pushing the rotary off the tracks, but that wont happen with a skilled operator.

Actually it’s not just the aces I think, those other railcars behind the snow plows are B units. I’m sure those probably help too.
@michaeldorosz6446

@@eliyahtherailfanner131 its only the ACe's that are moving the plows,the B units supply power to the rotary's blades only.
"Awesome watching UP snow bower in action!" Did you see who's name is on all the rotary equipment??
That’s cool, love Donner, only thing missing is the steam engine
@tedzehnder961

There is a narrow gauge road that has two built in the 1920`s and 30`s that use all steam mainly because no one builds them for that gauge.KZread has an example a from a few years back,that is imoressive!
I'm doing really well, thank you. 21:35
I'm guessing that the F-Bs I see sandwiched between the rotaries and the locos are demotored and the prime movers used to power the rotary's blade?
@natediemer1306
Жыл бұрын
That's what I've heard elsewhere, they likely still have their alternators and send the power to the Rotary. Still cool to hear those old EMD 567's chugging though!!
Any big moving job to be done, call the Union Pacific Railroad, pulling freight over the rockies 24-7.
It appears to be blowing the snow onto the adjacent track.
Any idea at what speed they are plowing at?
What is car behind rotary for
@snoebay88

Power car, it's a converted "B" unit.
@dankleinhenz657

I believe that is the power unit for the rotary's blower motor.
A-1 video...
But our all knowing politicians claim it's not enough and that water shortages are likely to happen in California.
Cool footage, annoying audio.
