[4K] Stearns Wharf - Santa Barbara, California - Walking Tour

Stearns Wharf is a pier at the cross section of the end of State Street and Cabrillo, in the harbor in Santa Barbara, California, United States. When completed In 1872, it became the longest deep-water pier between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Named for its builder, local lumberman John P. Stearns, the wharf served the passenger and freight shipping needs of California's South Coast for over a quarter century. Before the wharf, passengers and cargo had to be rowed ashore through the breakers and kelp. Despite the great convenience offered by the wharf, Santa Barbara remained a fair-weather harbor with an acute need for a breakwater. During December 1878, storms destroyed and washed away more than 1,000 feet of the wharf. Despite these losses, it would be another 52 years before Santa Barbara got its needed breakwater.

Some will call me an old timer here. Way back sometimes during the 1960s my grandparents lived I believe Shoreline Park area, I remember Stern's was maybe about a mile away I think. During the 1970- 1976 era I was 8 to 14 years old and visited my grandparents in the summers. My uncle had this bike and a large fishing pole he would let me use. Every morning just as the sun was barely rising and many foggy days I would head to Stern's. (To be sure about where my grandparents lived, I remember it was a quick downhill trip) I would fish mainly at the end of the wharf. Caught lots of Jack Smelt, Chub Mackerel and so many others I can not remember what they were. One time I caught an Octopus. During that time there was a bait shop on the pier and the guy had an aquarium outside the shop. I gave him the octuus to put in the aquarium. One time as I was reeling in my line, it was feeling heavy. There were a few fishermen close by and saw I was kind of struggling. Low and behold there was a Spider Crab. It came out of the water but about half way to the pier it got away and dropped back into the water. I know it has been many years since I have been there but to see the foot raffic in this video is amazing to me. Ut was not like that in the early 1970s the way I remembered it. I do remember eating at this one restaurant there before lunch and I headed back to my grandparents with lots of fish to get ready to prepare and cook. BTW, I remember when Abalone was a thing back then. I understand that it has been outlawed to hunt them down now
