Is it nerdy of me to know the names of all the high peaks visible? 😅🤣🤩

Got to be one of the most scenic approaches in the World . There’s something magical about looking out of the aircraft window and looking up at the surrounding land.

Not quite the most scenic. There is one flight sector which unfortunately isn't flown any more, but which left that approach into Queenstown for dead. Mount Cook Airlines' service from Christchurch to Mount Cook literally left everything for dead (it then carried on from Mount Cook to Queenstown). Flights would take off from Christchurch and fly due west, across the Canterbury Plains, then over the foot-hills and the great river valleys, then deep into the heart of Aotearoa New Zealand's Southern Alps. Eventually, the Tasman Saddle would appear on the left and the airliner would bank to port and cross the saddle, then begin descending down the Tasman Valley above the mighty Tasman Glacier. The Malte Brun Range, including Malte Brun itself, would slip past on the left-hand side of the airliner, while the high peaks of the Main Divide of the Southern Alps would pass by on the right-hand side, along with Mount Tasman and Aoraki-Mount Cook itself, with the mountain peaks towering above the flight-path of the airliner. Then, after passing Mount Cook Village, the airliner would land at Mount Cook Airport and passengers would emerge onto the tarmac surrounded by huge mountains on all sides. And pre-9/11, Mount Cook Airlines used to operate with an open cockpit door policy. From the time the seatbelt signs went off shortly after takeoff until they went on again shortly before landing at Mount Cook, passengers were invited and encouraged to visit the cockpit, two at a time, to admire the awesome scenery through the cockpit windows and take photographs. That was the most mind-blowing flight imaginable in terms of sheer grandeur in the scenery outside the airliner windows.

Spectacular views of the scenery! I've just bought a GoPro 11, so I'm looking forward to trying it out! I've only flown into NZQN twice, and the first was my only ever 'go around', to date. We came in from the opposite direction to you, over Lake Wakatipu - it was raining with low clouds and we hit the gas with about 1km to go! The reason given by the pilots was that there was an unexpected tailwind at the last minute. We spent an hour or so in the aircraft on the ground at Christchurch before another attempt. This second approach was along the Kawarau River, like yours. Still low very visibility, but the landing raised a cheer in the cabin! It was with Air New Zealand, so the post landing announcement was typically quirky: 'Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, after our sight seeing tour around the South Island today, we'd like to welcome you to Queenstown!'.

It really is stunning! Sadly in the many times I've flown into ZQN, I don't think I've ever flown in from the south but I'd love to one day. Admittedly the view flying between the mountains from the north is impressive.

@@paulstewart2ndchannel Likewise I have never come in from the south. I would love to, but the descent from the Crown Range following the Kawerau is probably the most dramatic approach I have ever seen as a passenger in a commercial jet - somewhat akin to arriving at Kai Tak. I have been on flights into tighter spots - like Quintin Lodge on the Milford many times back in the day, but that was a Mt. Cook Airlines Cessna 172.😆
