Ogoh-ogoh is a significant part of the Nyepi celebration, which is a Hindu holiday observed primarily in Bali, Indonesia. It falls on the day following the new moon of the spring equinox and is considered the Balinese New Year's Day.
Ogoh-ogoh refers to the large papier-mache effigies that are built by Balinese communities in the weeks leading up to Nyepi. These effigies are usually designed to represent mythological creatures or demons from Balinese folklore, and they are constructed with great care and attention to detail. The process of building the ogoh-ogoh is a community effort, with everyone from children to elders involved in the construction and decoration of the figures.
On the night of Nyepi, the ogoh-ogoh are paraded through the streets of the villages and towns in Bali. The parade is a lively and colorful affair, with traditional music, dance, and chanting accompanying the procession. The aim of the parade is to drive away any evil spirits that may be lurking in the area and to purify the environment in preparation for the day of silence that follows.
After the parade, the ogoh-ogoh are burned in a ritual called ngrupuk, which symbolizes the release of negative energy and the triumph of good over evil. The burning of the ogoh-ogoh is accompanied by prayers and offerings to the gods, and it is seen as a way to purify the environment and to ensure a good harvest in the coming year.
In summary, Ogoh-ogoh is a key element of the Nyepi celebration in Bali, Indonesia. The effigies, which are constructed in the weeks leading up to the holiday, represent mythological creatures and demons and are paraded through the streets on the night before Nyepi.
