[4K] Monterey, California | Cannery Row Walking Tour | 2022
Come on a walking tour of Cannery Row in Monterey, California. Monterey is a small coastal city of about 30,000 people. Cannery Row is a waterfront street in Monterey where it was the location of many now-defunct sardine canning factories. The last cannery closed down in 1973. The street was previously called Ocean View Avenue, but it was renamed Cannery Row in 1958 to honor writer John Steinbeck and his famous novel Cannery Row. Today, Cannery Row is a popular tourist destination with many hotels, shops, and restaurants. It is also a popular kayaking and scuba diving spot. The Monterey Bay Aquarium opened on Cannery Row in 1984 and is one of its main attraction.

Yeah, it is.
I was stationed at Ft. Ord from '71-73. Seaside, Monterey, Pacific Grove and Cannery Row were our weekend stomping grounds. First stop Saturday morning was the Egglet in Seaside for the best omelette i've ever had. You could build your own. Saw Cheech and Chong and some concerts live in Monterey. Had some great seafood on Fishermans wharf. Cannery Row was the way to get to Pebble beach. 17 mile drive was free and one of the most scenic drives there is. Cannery Row was much different then. Most of the original canneries and buildings were still there. There was a small long and narrow movie theater with no seats, just thick carpet and huge long pillows. You didn't sit, you laid down. I saw Mad Dogs and Englishmen there with Joe Cocker. There was a company called Ferro boat (It was located @4:36 Hovden Way)that would sell you the plans and a kit to build a boat made with a cement hull. I watched them being built and yes, they did float. Some great memories, I'll never forget that place. Looks like a tourist trap now. Too bad, it lost most of its history and charm imo.

What happened to Oscar Hosenfellers? It use to be right in front of the Monterey Cannery. They had a live chicken that would play tic tac toe with you and would always win. There was a lot of quarter video games and icecream and candy making store. Everything changes
Looks really nice there

No problem. Glad you enjoyed it. I was wondering that as well. Might just be an old fish house shack on a slope near the water.
Nice video

You needed to go to Hollister hills
What camera did you use? It looks great. I was just in Pismo Beach. Cannery has cleaner stores and more upscale hotels such as Intercontinental and Plaza.

I lived in Monterey for six months back in 1984-85. It wasn’t for me. Had a bad work experience there which ruined it. Glad I did it, otherwise I would have regretted not doing it. Cannery Row is much different now than it was when I lived there. I have been back since then, but decided Monterey is a nice place to visit, but would not want to live there. Again!
