4K: Iceland by drone - montage
Фильм және анимация
Behind the scenes here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cz4dp...
Check out my blog post for loads more info here:philipbloom.net/blog/wonderlis...
This is the full montage I made back in August from our filming of the episode the The Wonder List with Bill Weir that recently was broadcast on CNN. My edit was graded with the Inspire 1 profiles of Film Convert (with heavy customisation) and you can get FilmConvert with 10% off at tinyurl.com/filmconvert
I shot a lot of stuff with the DJI Inspire 1 and Phantom 3, 80% was with the Inspire 1. I switched to the P3 for narrower space shots, when batteries were low or on the odd occasion when the Inspire 1 went slightly screwy due to some magnetic interference I was told it might be!
This is of course not everything even though at 8 minutes it is pretty long! The length was dictated by the track from Sigur Rós that I used as a temp base. This edit was originally for New York HQ so they could get a flavour of what we had done, they liked it so much that they actually licensed Sæglópur for the show hence I am able to use it for this edit. If you watched the show and saw lots of other lovely aerials and ask why I have not included them then it is simple, they were shot from a helicopter we hired. Some of them look so low that can't be but they were. Our pilot did some slow low circling up around some amazing landscapes. I shot those with the Sony A7s and the Movi M5.
Audio done as foley in post as no sound is recorded by the drones as it is rather pointless. All sounds from freesound.org
All of this was single operator mode with my 1st AC acting as spotter.
Enjoy! The Wonder List season 2 airs from March 20th only on CNN USA for now. International broadcast to follow, where and on which TV channel I don't know as it is being distributed by a 3rd party distributor.

Wow... Mr. Philip Bloom, pilot extraordinaire!!! I remember you just picking up the first DJI Phantom and playing around in Nevada desert! You've obviously mastered the art of flying. Those were seamless shots and beautiful compositions. Truly inspiring.
This is absolutely stunning.
I normally never comment on videos but this time I have to... The whole video is beautiful, but the opening shot is pure perfection! Especially when the sound of the footsteps fades in. Thanks for sharing!

Lovely selection. The light in those sunset shots is just beautiful. I was already looking forward to filming in Iceland this year, even more so now!
This footage is amazing, color grading is on point, too! The music really heightens the experience; paired with the on-screen imagery, it's a very powerful and sometimes emotional experience. Excellent work!

+kold The KZread codec also makes such high detail video look worse.

+kold I think most people love high saturation, high contrast etc. Just like loud music, it's easier to recognise the amplified detail. However when you learn to recognise the more subtle nuances, you may start to appreciate that a work of art is a bit less contrasting, so the finer nuances do not get over shouted. When mixing music the mixer takes into the account also the medium on which the media is presented, and tunes the mix in such way every tone is within the range of the media that projects it. I can imagine that for KZread a different grade looks better then for Vimeo where there is more bits per second available. On this video it looks like to me that camera and codec used barely managed to capture the wide dynamic range of the scenes on Island. To me the shadows look pushed to the breaking limit, although that probably is worsened by KZread's lower bitrate codec. I think the colourful contrast rich Iceland is a very challenging environment for camera's to capture, and for people to correct and grade. I love Philip's shooting style, with those spectacular, memorable and well planned unveiling signature shots.

Philip Bloom That's such a dick answer. Colour grading is entirely subjective and he just expressed his opinion.

I was just in Iceland, flying my Mavic Pro. What a JOY. Nothing like what Philip has done here . . such a great job he's done. There is actually a DJI store in Reykjavik, and i talked to the employee there. I confirmed what I had researched: there are no requirements for a license, registration, etc. However, within 5km of an airport, you must fly below the tallest building. Other than that, some areas have no drone fly-zones, such as Dyrholaey (Puffins are there flying around, so they want to protect them), and Þingvellir (or Thingvellir in english), which is a national park.
Amazing! Can't wait to bring my Phantom 4 to Iceland!
Wow...learned a lot from this video.. going to Iceland next month.. gonna use these techniques.
Love the video man! I will be going in May for 3 days. What are the must sees?!
well that was amazing! there's a lot to learn from your shot
Beautiful! :D Great job Philip!! cant wait to see the Wonder List! Do you think you could do a video about how you stay on top of charging your batteries for all your equipment? i would love to see your routine and learn from how you stay on top of charging all your batteries and also what batteries you use to get the most out of your cameras. thanks ! you have always been in inspiration!

Thanks. Something things really don't need videos, it would be the most tedious video ever! I have a super simple solution. I made a charging station out of a carry on suitcase. Here it is: scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xlf1/v/t1.0-9/11951265_10152942585930426_7985014977420669914_n.jpg?oh=da02f88ebe591794fa1e084e1c6412ec&oe=57BF2B10
