    That was quite the tour of MCI. From near 19R around the two old terminals to 19L only to have to go 2/3 of the way back to Rwy. 9. Fun to see that Delta and one UA had to take the circuitous route but SWC and a second UA were able to take the revised shortcut. LOL. And when coming into JFK - you were a mile away from JFK, you had to travel an additional 17 minutes to land on 13L.

    Couple of observations: 1.) Never knew they would taxi almost across the entire airport on just 1 engine before firing the second one. 2.) Those engines can ingest a metric ton of rainwater for a long period of time. The overall weight of the plane must be tremendous with that much water on all the surfaces. 3.) Nevertheless, they cut the engine power to comfort the ears of those down below. Great video!

  • @sla31

    You know, airlines used to run with one engine for longer more often, and it seems to be something they don't really do much anymore. This was the first flight in a long time where I can remember them doing it for such a long time before starting the second. So, I'm not sure exactly why. Maybe it was just to save fuel. Or maybe the crew thought they'd need to sit for awhile to let the weather pass more... I don't know, but it sure makes for a nice conversation piece haha. Thanks for watching my friend!

    The following isn't a reflection on this flight video itself - as always great content! Just a bit disturbing that whomever supervised ramp staff, allowed them outdoors when lightning was in the area. The storm may be miles away, but it's not uncommon for lightning to travel large distances. Luckily nobody was struck - especially given the metal & high structures nearby. Just a reminder that these normally unsung, and generally ignored ramp agents risk their lives often.

  • @sla31

    @sla31

    Жыл бұрын

    As someone who has worked on the ramp for airlines in the past, I too was surprised at this. Back when I was a supervisor at Envoy (this was years ago now), we didn't mess with lightning. If that plane had to sit or be late, it was what it was if lightning was in the area. Several times recently though, including yesterday, there has been lightning in the area of a flight I was on and the ramp crews either continued working, or they just seemed to ignore the lightning warnings. You don't want to mess with lightning! Of course, there's this instance. And yesterday, I flew from GCM-FLL. Of course, there's always afternoon storms in South Florida. Well, right at we were pulling up to the terminal, I saw all the lightning indicators on top of the terminal start to go off. For anyone reading this who doesn't know what I'm talking about, there are white strobe lights on top of most larger airport terminals, that will automatically go off when lightning gets too close. This is the ground crews indication that they need to seek shelter and stop working immediately. Of course, we stopped, and not 1 minute later, the captain came on and said they'd closed the ramp and we'd have to wait... Annoying for passengers, but the safety of those working outside, of course, trumps the inconvenience. To my surprise, we started moving again, not even 30 seconds later. I thought, of the must want us out of the way. Maybe another plane had already pushed ahead of us and they want to go ahead and taxi. Nope... They pulled us into our gate and started working the flight. So again, this seemed to be a case of ground crews just ignoring nearby lightning... That's a bad road to go down, and it'll end with bad results. Anyway, thanks for watching my friend!

    @@sla31 Yes, things are heading in the wrong direction if what you say is true. You don't mess with lightning. On a positive side, totally love how videos show the transition from rain to snow as the aircraft gains altitude and vice versa when landing. Given your aircraft was "in the cloud" for that length of time as it was making its way to cruise, it would appear that storm wasn't one to mess with.

    I film with iPhones, and since the 13 Pro, I've noticed that they have a hard time adjusting to the colors when there are a lot of clouds or overcast conditions. As you mentioned, it will shade from more blues to more reds, and it never settles on one until more of the clouds dissipate. It's not supposed to do that, but I have yet to find a solution to this issue.

  • @sla31

    @sla31

    Жыл бұрын

    I do not film in the cockpit no. Only on rare occasions have I filmed in the cockpit. I did for the American MD-80 and Delta MD-90 retirement flights. See, as you alluded to, filming in the cockpit can be a bit of a can of worms. Sometimes airlines are fine with it, sometimes they're not. I just don't, to be safe. I film and upload all these videos because the airlines allow me to. I don't want to tick them off by doing anything they might not like. That's why I film passengers as little as possible. I try to get cabin shots without anyones faces being shown, etc. In addition to not wanting to get any of the airlines mad at me, as you know, I film all of these as a regular paying passenger on regular flights. Flights that have to turn and fly somewhere else soon after we arrive. I worked for the airlines for years right out of college. Most of those years as a frontline supervisor at a small station. I know firsthand how little time they give you to turn planes, and the last thing I want to do is hold up that process because I want to get footage of the cockpit or the cabin. Again, trying my best to stay in the airlines good graces haha.

    Wow. Are you sure that you didn't take off from SEA or PDX with how wet and gloomy those shies were? See those amazing views of NY brought back a whole slew of old memories for me of my teen years. Great view of JFK and also of Floyd Bennett. Good views of Rockaway. I liked the beaches there WAY better than the one at Coney Island. Well, guess what. My GF has to report to court on Monday morning for jury duty. If she had been called a week earlier, there would've been no dockets, no cases and every single person who was summoned was excused for that whole week, their duty concluded. My immediate neighbors have never been called in their lives. That's the way it works. Some people get called as often as every single year and others never get called in their entire lifetimes. I do't think that's random no matter what the courts keep telling us. Anyhow, another fine video on your part. Time for me to rest of up from the jet lag. I think I'll watch the 3rd Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

    @@sla31 Me too. She's understandably nervous. I'm glad she's going up to Everett and not down to Seattle. The King County Courthouse has 2 big problems. 1) there are a lot of bad elements that hang out there who are looking to harass, assault or mug you and 2) the building is seismically unsafe. A major quake could being the whole building crashing down on you if you're inside it. That part of town is even more unsafe for women. The Federal Courthouse building is the opposite. It's fully quake proof and is also designed to be resistant to different acts of terrorism. And it also has a lot fewer bad elements who are looking to bother you. The security there is much better. Everett has some seedy elements too, but it's not to the level that Seattle is. With the Superior court up there, who knows what kind of case she'll end up getting if she gets selected for a jury. It could be anything between a mere misdemeanor, to a rape or murder or child molestation case. My fingers are crossed for her. I was lucky last winter that my group was never called and my group was excused by Monday night. When my GF postponed her duty back in January, they called me almost immediately afterward. That was definitely not a coincidence.

With the weather in the area, the pilots likely knew they may have to sit for a while before departing, so they waited to start the second engine so save fuel. For really long taxis, to save fuel, pilots tend to start the other engine only no more than five minutes before takeoff. Single engine taxis are getting less common now due to the inconvenience of keeping the airplane straight in addition to putting more thrust on the one engine. However, I had been on really long taxis in which both engines started before the taxi even begun (example would be taxing from Terminal A at DFW to Runway 18L, Terminal 4 at LAX to Runway 6R, Terminal 4 at PHX to Runway 7L) while I had experienced short taxis with single engine taxis (like at cvg once when Runway 18L was like almost next to our gate, and we held short of the runway for like 2-3 minutes either cause our destination, DCA, did not have a slot time for us or cause they needed time for the engines to stabilize and the apu to shutdown).
