Part 1. Refugee Food Culture
During the Korean War (June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953), many citizens sought refuge further south on the Korean peninsula, and settled in the port city of Busan. When the battles ended, some were able to find their way back to their home cities, but those who had come from the North could not return.
Refugees from the North struggled to make this new city their home, and bringing them a bit of solace was their hometown cuisine: such as ‘mil-myeon’ (noodle dish) and ‘dwaeji gukbap’ (pork and rice soup).
Authentic dishes from the North became staples of the region, and are now known as Busan specialties. We’ll learn about the refugee food culture that bloomed in Busan through exclusive interviews with locals and expert historians.
1부 - 피란과 음식
1950년 6월25일. 한국전쟁이 발발하자 부산으로 몰려온 피란민들.
전쟁이 끝나자 고향으로 돌아갔지만 이북에서 온 피란민들은 돌아갈 곳이 없었다.
휴전선에 가로막힌 고향대신 부산에 정착하기 위해 힘겹게 살았던 피란민들에게 고향의 음식 한 그릇은 단순한 음식이 아니었다. 따뜻한 가족의 손길이자 갈 수 없는 고향의 품과 같았다.
피란민들에 의해 이북에서 먹던 농마국수와 순대국밥은 밀면과 돼지국밥으로 재탄생했고, 시간이 흐르면서 부산을 대표하는 음식으로 발전했다. 또 피란민의 힘겨운 삶과 애환이 고스란히 담긴 판자촌, 거리, 시장도 격동의 현대사를 상징하는 부산의 명소가 되었다.

I really enjoyed watching this. The landscape is beautiful, I was truly astonished. The story is compelling and I highly appreciate the good background. I suddenly felt curious about Korean food so it's a nice first video to watch. Any suggestions are very welcome.
I have to agree with Joo Kyeung-eub, listening to the historians, the heart of Gukje Market started beating with refugees, not the Busan citizens. Absolutely enjoyed watching this vid, and learning the cultural aspects of the N Koreans in Busan, and the strength that they had to forge a future for their next generations. It took me an hour to watch because I kept stopping it to truly look and observe the landscape, the homes and work environment of the people, the food; amazing, snippets of historical facts were awesome especially the 40 Steps and its meaning. The heart wrenching part for me was when Joo Kyeung-eub stated, 'the refugees hopes to earn a living and be able to return home. Obviously some didn't return, but did any return home, it's heart wrenching because I could not think to be aware from my homeland. Thank you for sharing from Aotearoa [NZ] 💝💝💝
this culture food is one good example... media should promote shows that encourage sentiments of people... with sentiments, people of diverse cultural backgrounds appreciate each other... for media to densely concentrate on talks about nukes would nauseate either north or south... children of either side will mentally be distanced instead of bringing children of different orientations to appreciate each other...
if one side is negative nd other side respond in negativity... truly repel each other... if one steps back nd show positive things to the negative side, truly attract each other... its science law...
