🇬🇧 Located 45 km from Madrid, Chinchón can be seen from a distance because of its houses built into the hills. Chinchón's beautiful medieval square is the most emblematic feature of Chinchón. With its irregular ground plan and consisting of two- and three-storey houses with balconies, it has long been - and still is - the scene of many activities and shows.
In addition to its characteristic main square, Plaza Mayor, with its wooden balconies and lintelled galleries, the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (1534-1626), which was sacked and set ablaze by Napoleon's troops in 1808, is particularly worth a visit. The present-day church was completed in 1828 and is a mixture of Gothic, Plateresque, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The magnificent painting of Goya's Assumption of the Virgin is housed inside.Other buildings of interest include: the 17th century convent of the Order of Saint Clare; the clock tower, belonging to the old parish church of Nuestra Señora de Gracia and restored in 1856; and the remains of a 15th-century castle, rebuilt between 1590 and 1598 by the 3rd Count of Chinchón and also burnt down in 1808 by Napoleon's troops. In the centre of the town, you will see noble houses bearing coats of arms and stately homes with beautiful courtyards and galleries supported by Doric, Ionic or Tuscan columns, or with stone bases and straight shafts with footings.
Furthermore, this Madrid town of 5,000 inhabitants has been the focus of interest for Hollywood directors for decades. Orson Welles or Wes Anderson, among others, stopped by here to film. Films like Chimes at Midnight (1965), Circus World (1964), Around the World in 80 Days (1956) and more recently Asteroid City (2023) have been filmed there.

Hola! I saw this video up on Friday afternoon (i think) but I decided to wait until Sunday night to watch it so I could relax and enjoy the tour. I got my coffee and a warm blanket, and enjoyed the tour. 😀 I just read the description and I've heard of the film 'Around the World', and Chimes at Midnight sounds interesting. I'll definitely check them out sometime. After watching the tour, I can see why the films were made here. A cinematographer's dream, especially the Plaza Mayor. Very beautiful Plaza Mayor! The green color of the balconies against the white of the buildings really stands out. I don't recall seeing that green and white in any other plaza mayor before, but maybe I'm mistaken. This one felt slightly different - not square or rectangular - and I loved the apartments overlooking the square. I love to look out my window and see people and activity, so I would definitely like an apartment there. But no need to look for my passport, I definitely couldn't afford to live there. 😅 The ancient laundry was quite interesting. I think I could see a little mini aqueduct bringing the water into the pool. A Roman thing maybe? Anyway, it reminded me that I must visit my modern laundry tomorrow. 😁 At 12:42 at the museum, I see some of those big, old Spanish doors. Always impressive to see. I was thinking that the tower must be very old when I was looking at the stonework, and I see from the description that it was restored in 1856, along with the church. That damn Napoleon! 🤣 I've said it before, but I love the stone that the church is made from, the way it just drinks up the sunlight. Feels so warm, especially against the deep, blue sky. At 22:00, whew, that car was movin' fast! They usually drive pretty slow through those small streets. Very nice ending back in the Plaza Mayor at the creche, just 4 days before Christmas. Wow, I just realized that was a month ago. Seems like Christmas was yesterday. Time flies. Very enjoyable video. Take care.

Hola! How's it going? I'm glad you enjoyed the tour accompanied by a good coffee. I've seen some news about storms in the United States, so I imagine you've had a few very cold days there. We have also had cold and rainy days here although fortunately it seems that the weather has improved... so far! You're right, it seems like a few days have passed since Christmas and it was a month ago! In reality, in Spain we conclude the Christmas holiday on January 6, so in our case I can say that it was not long ago 😄 These walking tours that I am uploading now are the ones that I filmed before Christmas when I didn't have my computer to edit the videos so don't be surprised if you still see some Christmas decorations on the streets 😄 It doesn't surprise me either that Chinchon is a common location for filming films, apart from being a beautiful typical Spanish town, it is located very close to Madrid, so it is not difficult to go there to it with a lot of equipment. In the 60s, it was very common for big Hollywood blockbusters to be filmed in Spain since it was a very cheap place to film and with a great variety of settings so they could pass those locations off as places in other countries. I agree with everything you have said about the Plaza Mayor. It is the most representative place in Chinchon and one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Spain. As you say, it is not very common for square to be circular (there are some more in Spain) and that is why it is also used as a bullring. In fact, in the movie I mentioned about "Around the World in 80 Days" it was used to film a bullfight that took place in a Mexican town. What you see here at 9:20 is a Burladero which is the place where the bullfighters take refuge during the bullfight. On those terraces of the square there are also restaurants where you can enjoy the views while you have a drink. Regarding the Old Laundry, I can't tell you when it was built, I have looked for information about when it was built but I haven't found anything. So maybe it was built at the same time as the square, that is, in the 15th century. It is a very beautiful laundry room but I also prefer to wash my clothes in a modern one 😆 That door you mention is very typical of Castilian towns, it also seems to be in good condition, it must have been the only thing in the town that Napoleon's troops did not destroy! 😆 Chinchon is said to be a town that has a tower without a church (in reference to "Torre del Reloj") and a church without a tower (in reference to "Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion"). The church to which that tower belonged before it was burned by French troops was from the 15th century, only the tower remained standing, which was restored in 1856. You're right, the guy in the car was going at full speed, I don't think it's very safe to drive at that speed through such narrow streets with many curves, fortunately I heard it much earlier and moved to the side. Here in Spain, people generally drive correctly, although a few drive as if they were crazy (electric scooter drivers deserve special mention). Are drivers more respectful in the United States? Thank you for your visit as always. I hope the weather is also improving in Boston and you have some warmer days. Nos vemos. Take care!!
