[4K] Carmel-by-the-Sea - California USA - Walking Tour
Carmel-by-the-Sea often simply called Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, California, United States, founded in 1902 and incorporated on October 31, 1916. Situated on the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel is known for its natural scenery and rich artistic history. In 1906, the San Francisco Call devoted a full page to the "artists, writers and poets at Carmel-by-the-Sea", and in 1910 it reported that 60 percent of Carmel's houses were built by citizens who were "devoting their lives to work connected to the aesthetic arts." Early City Councils were dominated by artists, and several of the city's mayors have been poets or actors, including Herbert Heron, founder of the Forest Theater, bohemian writer and actor Perry Newberry, and actor-director Clint Eastwood.
Carmel-by-the-Sea is located on the Pacific coast, about 330 miles (531 km) north of Los Angeles and 120 miles (193 km) south of San Francisco. Communities near Carmel-by-the-Sea include Carmel Valley and Carmel Highlands. The larger town of Monterey borders Carmel to the north.

This is the video I didn't know I needed. Just an overview walk of the area where I'm free to observe without distracting narration or music. I plan to learn more before I visit, but this sort of quiet tour allows me to take the surroundings in. Great work, Andrew.

Thank you, glad it was helpful!
For those who don't know, this area is a rare treasure both for CA and the US. It's a real shame it isn't larger or that more of CA looks like this (SF and LA are nothing like it). The main settlers of the area I think were artists and creative types so they put a lot of thought into the aesthetic of what they were building, intentionally trying to create a charming village that still felt immersed in the natural plant life of the area. Now it arguably gets a bit too many tourists for its size and is heavy on the pricey shops. Also, young artists tend to flock to the same hipster hot spots these days, so mainly LA (Silver Lake, Echo Park, Los Feliz) in CA, not places like this.

Zoning. The large majority of cities in the US have very strict zoning laws that stifle that creativity of which you speak.

Hawaii is less expensive than Carmel, Ca , in term of property tax. Maui has exemptions and lower percentage tax rate for residents. However, water and energies and food are expensive. Paying jobs are low and maybe no jobs. If you save a lot of money in the property taxes, no mortgage, retired and almost off-grid, then you go it made.

@@blissh808 damn that's saying something because from what I have heard from Americans Hawaii is a very expensive state as it is.
Such a little gem in California I can’t wait to one day visit and walk the path you walked.
Looooove this town, been there twice. Here in Norway all towns are small and cozy, so this felt more like home to me than most towns in USA.

Thanks for posting this. I have been to Carmel a few times & stayed at the Pine Inn on Ocean Street. The town is amazing & so pretty its almost unreal. It is one part of California that is still intact & unspoiled. It's unfortunate the video didn't include some footage of the beautiful beach at the end of Ocean Street.

I love going to Carmel. My parents used to our family there when I was younger as we had family at nearby Selinas. Its truly breath taking with all of the local shops they have to offer. I have to go back their some day.

I remember walking through that arcade (14:00-15:30) with my parents when I was four, back in 1966, and thinking it was the coolest place. Not much has changed since then, except the dining area was more open, without that wall that creates a separate room around the fireplace. The area was darker then too, sort of late '60s in style--more mysterious and exotic looking. Carmel was one of our go-to places when relatives came out from Michigan to visit. The town has given me many happy memories. Thanks for posting.

@@TheOnlyOneStanding8079 Yes, I did thanks. We went to Clint Eastwood bar the 'Hoggs Breath' I took one of the yellow napkins as a souvenir. Carmel had an old English village feel to it. We were there for the day but were actually based in Union Square in San Francisco. We also stayed in Southern California and visited LA and, places in Orange County. Then went to Sea World in San Diego.

Visited this place for the first time. People seem extremely friendly however, I just don't quite understand all the rave. Very difficult to find parking. Lots of steep hills - not a good spot for strollers and wheelchairs although doable if you're in love with this place. Overall, it just looks like a tiny district getting swallowed by a forest. Nearby beach is beautiful though!
Nice to see trashcans. Looks like a place where they dont treat people like robots.
