【4K】 Walking in Athens Greece

Athens is the capital of Greece. It was also at the heart of Ancient Greece, a powerful civilization and empire. The city is still dominated by 5th-century BC landmarks, including the Acropolis, a hilltop citadel topped with ancient buildings like the colonnaded Parthenon temple. The Acropolis Museum, along with the National Archaeological Museum, preserves sculptures, vases, jewelry and more from Ancient Greece.

Tell me about it...When a country is filled with anarchists and football fanatics, tags are gonna be on every single wall. There's a never ending cycle of tagging and repainting walls and doors in Athens...

What time did you make this video? 7 o clock on a Sunday morning when everything is closed? The city looks empty, this has nothing to do with Athens we all know, which is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city! Also the weather is wrong for filming, Athens has 300 sunny days a year, and you filmed on a cloudy, dull day.

The truth is that graphite makes the buildings ugly. But this video has only the ugly side of this city. Athens city centre is not a walk around the Syntagma square as it shows us this video, but has much more places to show closely to syntagma square. For shopping and coffee shops , someone can go to Kolonoki square or Ermou avenue, or monastirski, or Stadiou avenue . All these streets have nice neoclassical building which gives an identity in the city.

Nice to see the city where I was in 1967 (I was 12 years old) for the first time. In 1973, 1974 and 1984 I visited it again and few more times afterwards. In the early years one could hardley buy any food, only few restaurants with very basic and very Greek food. Now I see lots of modern food chains. Horrible to see the graffiti!! Even worse then Amsterdam.

The pavements are broken and change colours, materials and even width randomly. Torn up posters too. The walls are full of tags and ugly graffiti. The roads are in disrepair. The buildings have worn out paints jobs and many are abandoned and derelict. There are broken benches and old telephone stands everywhere. Virtually no greenery maintenance either. Athens is disgusting.

if Athens is ugly it is because it is for the most part a modern city. During antiquity, Athens had only 10,000 inhabitants then it became a small village. 95% of the city's districts were built after 1830. The city has grown in less than two centuries from 2 or 3 thousand inhabitants to 1 million today. in addition, the oldest district of the city had been partly destroyed during the war of independence, it was necessary to rebuild everything. Athens is less beautiful than other European cities because apart from ancient monuments, there are very few ancient buildings dating from the Middle Ages or before the 19th century. there is just a small Byzantine church in the plaka district, another on the Acropolis and a few monasteries that during the Middle Ages were outside Athens long before the city got bigger. since then, other religious monuments have been built but not the same charm as old monuments. there are also some buildings in neoclassical style built during the 19th century. that is just about everything.
