Santa Ana is a Salvadoran district, the only one that makes up the municipality of Santa Ana Centro; which has the title of city , and is the head of the homonymous department and seat of the homonymous diocese ; Today it is the main city of the western zone, and the second most important city of El Salvador , located 64 km from the capital of the republic, San Salvador
The municipality of Santa Ana has an estimated population of 264,091 inhabitants for the year 2013, ranking second in population. For its administration, it is divided into 34 cantons and 312 hamlets , 5 while the municipal seat is divided into 12 neighborhoods and several colonies .
The town celebrates its patron saint festivities from July 17 to 26, they are popularly known as "Julias Festivities" and are celebrated in tribute to Mrs. Santa Ana , patron saint of the department. 7
Although there are archaeological records dating back to the preclassic period , the city was founded around the 5th or 6th century , by the Mayans , and then occupied by the Nahuas , who gave it the name Sihuatehuacan . It was conquered by the Spanish during the 16th century , and later belonged to the Mayor's Office of San Salvador and then to the Municipality of San Salvador . It has been part of the Salvadoran State, both in its federal and independent stages. 8
In 1894 the Revolution of the 44 took place , which led to the coup d'état against the government of Carlos Ezeta . During the golden age of coffee , at the beginning of the 20th century , it was the richest city in the country. By the 20th century , and in the 1980s, Santa Ana was affected by the Civil War in El Salvador . 8​ With the signing of the Chapultepec Peace Accords in 1992 (which put an end to 12 years of war) and with the beginning of the third millennium, the town experienced an increase in the urban population due to the emigration of inhabitants from the areas rural areas and accelerated urban expansion with the construction of new residential areas.
